ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF AQUACULTURE INVESTMENTS UNDER CONDITIONS OF RISK AND UNCERTAINTY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA
2014
This study aims to analyze, from a technical and ec onomic point of view, the choice between alternative investments in aquaculture under condit ions of risk and uncertainty. In particular, a comparative analysis has been conducted between an inshore and an offshore farm producing European sea bass in the Mediterranean Sea. The app lied model refers to the theory of subjective probability, assigning a different probability to e xpected incomes during the investment period. Resul ts show an economic convenience of inshore with respect to offshore farming.
Headquarters’ Control Capacity and the Choice of R&D Organizational Forms Abroad
2013
International audience; Recently, regarding globalization, the decentralization of R&D activities abroad by multinational companies (MNCs) has become important in developed countries. However, academic research has not given this topic sufficient attention. This paper explains how the efficiency of control and incentive mechanisms may affect the choice of organizational forms by MNCs that decentralize their R&D activities abroad. We identify five main organizational forms: wholly owned green-field subsidiary, wholly owned acquired subsidiary, joint venture, cross-licensing agreements, and unilateral licensing agreements. A questionnaire addressed to the R&D managers of American and European…
Measurements of aerosol and CCN properties in the Mackenzie River delta (Arctic) during RACEPAC
2018
Within the framework of the RACEPAC (Radiation-Aerosol-Cloud Experiment in the Arctic Circle) project, the Arctic aerosol, arriving at a ground-based station in Tuktoyaktuk (Mackenzie River delta area, Canada), was characterized during a period of 3 weeks in May 2014. Basic meteorological parameters and particle number size distributions (PNSDs) were observed and two distinct types of air masses were found. One type were typical Arctic haze air masses, termed accumulation-type air masses, characterized by a monomodal PNSD with a pronounced accumulation mode at sizes above 100 nm. These air masses were observed during a period when back trajectories indicate an air mass origin in the north-e…

Studying students ́satisfaction at music schools in the Valencian Region
2017
[EN] Satisfaction is a key construct but complex to be measured. Within the cultural context and from the discipline of marketing, satisfaction consists of assessing some experiences without considering consumers ́ expectations. From this approach, this paper deals with an empirical research aiming at analyzing satisfaction among students of music conservatoires and schools. The research, qualitative and quantitative in nature, allowed to know users ́ assessment of different variables: studies, teaching staff, information technologies, premises and administration procedures. To do so, a self-administered survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire. Univariate and multivariate anal…
LOS MUSEOS DE CIENCIAS COMO INSTRUMENTOS DE REFLEXIÓN SOBRE LOS PROBLEMAS DEL PLANETA
2002
Distribution of Fitness Effects Caused by Single-Nucleotide Substitutions in Bacteriophage f1
2010
Empirical knowledge of the fitness effects of mutations is important for understanding many evolutionary processes, yet this knowledge is often hampered by several sources of measurement error and bias. Most of these problems can be solved using site-directed mutagenesis to engineer single mutations, an approach particularly suited for viruses due to their small genomes. Here, we used this technique to measure the fitness effect of 100 single-nucleotide substitutions in the bacteriophage f1, a filamentous single-strand DNA virus. We found that approximately one-fifth of all mutations are lethal. Viable ones reduced fitness by 11% on average and were accurately described by a log-normal dist…
Correlation between mutation rate and genome size in riboviruses: mutation rate of bacteriophage Qβ.
2013
Abstract Genome sizes and mutation rates covary across all domains of life. In unicellular organisms and DNA viruses, they show an inverse relationship known as Drake’s rule. However, it is still unclear whether a similar relationship exists between genome sizes and mutation rates in RNA genomes. Coronaviruses, the RNA viruses with the largest genomes (∼30 kb), encode a proofreading 3′ exonuclease that allows them to increase replication fidelity. However, it is unknown whether, conversely, the RNA viruses with the smallest genomes tend to show particularly high mutation rates. To test this, we measured the mutation rate of bacteriophage Qβ, a 4.2-kb levivirus. Amber reversion-based Luria–D…
A fuzzy-set analysis of conditions influencing mutual fund performance
2019
Abstract This paper presents an application of fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to frame the conditions that lead to over- or under-performance of mutual funds. Building upon a considerable library of research on fund returns, the study uses fsQCA to affirm and extend earlier discoveries. Considered here is fund performance relative to Morningstar ratings, features of the funds themselves, as well as characteristics of the fund managers. Results suggest that positive Morningstar and analyst ratings are necessary conditions, on average, for funds to generate value according to the Jensen's alpha ratio. Just over seven percent of the cases imply that funds have attractive Sh…
