Use of socio-scientific issues in order to improve critical thinking competences

Abstract This article analyzes the implications of the use of socio-scientific issues (SSI) in a series of critical thinking competences. For this, a didactic intervention with 3 SSIs is carried out, developed during 16 weeks, in which there were 56 students who participated in a program of education in the sciences. A quasi-experimental design was used and there is a comparison of the pre-test and post-test to describe the influence of the intervention. The test information was assessed from an analysis qualitative and quantitative that compares the type of participant responses once the intervention. De cómo el átomo se convierte en 'real' y complejo y adquiere una estructura

El artículo presenta la aparición de nuevas partículas que cuestionan la indivisibilidad del átomo y la introducción de modelos clásicos, que no pueden explicar ni la estabilidad de los átomos ni los espectros atómicos, lo que lleva a Bohr y Sommerfeld a proponer sus modelos atómicos precuánticos que no explican la intensidad y la anchura de las rayas espectrales ni la existencia de direcciones privilegiadas en los enlaces atómicos. Para explicar la estructura del átomo, hay que introducir el modelo cuántico. Esta presentación histórica puede contribuir a familiarizar al alumnado con la naturaleza de la ciencia.

SUMMARY This is a report about research and results in the application of History of Science to Science Teaching. After a first approach to analyse which is today¿s status of History of Science in high school Physics and Chemistry classes, we attempt to demonstrate that an appropriate introduction of several aspects of history and sociology of Science in our classes can operate a significant improvement in pupil¿s image and attitudes in Science and Science Teaching. El presente artículo estudia los métodos de iniciación a la viola más utilizados entre el profesorado de las Enseñanzas Elementales de la provincia de Valencia. Participan en el estudio 26 profesores de 21 conservatorios públicos. El instrumento de recogida de la información ha sido el cuestionario diseñado según criterios basados en la sencillez, precisión y concreción de los 32 ítems que lo componen y la discreción y preservación del anonimato en el manejo de la información recabada. This paper evaluates the evolution of environmental performance in the context of the European Union (EU), over the period 1993–2010. The context is particularly relevant, due to the traditionally high concerns of the EU about these issues, which has triggered off several initiatives and regulations on environmental protection. In this setting, we conduct a two-stage analysis which develops environmental performance indicators in the first stage for each pair country-year, and evaluates its evolution in the second. Examination of the least-squares method applied to the evaluation of physicochemical parameters with linearized equations

Physicochemical parameters are frequently evaluated by the least-squares method after linearization of the equation which relates the experimental variables to the parameters of interest. When a given set of data is treated to evaluate (n+1) parameters. (n+2) nominally identical linearized equations are possible; each of these leads to different sets of values of the parameters which are also affected by different variances. These differences are also observed when statistical weights are used.
