L'uso del trattato di Vignola come modello per l'architettura di età moderna in Sicilia
2013
The Use of Vignola’s Treatise as a Model for the Architecture of Modern Age in Sicily. The paper aims to highlight the influence of the Regola Delli Cinque Ordini by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola (1507-1573) on the architecture of modern age in Sicily. A proof of its actual im- pact on built items can be promptly observed analyzing the ar- chitecture of the time which clearly shows the treatise was used as a catalogue of models in the whole territory of the island, in civil as well as in religious buildings. Not always, however, the engravings are slavishly copied; sometimes the tables are subject to a revision on behalf of architects, craftsmen and clients. Among the engravings whose influence…

L'influenza delle incisioni romane nell'architettura siciliana del Settecento
2013
The aim of this essay is to assess the real influence of Roman architectural engravings in Sicily, particularly focusing on the series of doors and windows published in the second volume of Andrea Pozzo’s treatise (1700) as well as on those included in Gian Giacomo and Domenico Rossi’s publications, with particular reference to the first volume of Studio di Architettura Civile (Roma 1702). The research focuses on the work of the three main characters of Sicilian Late Baroque, Giovan Amico (1684-1754), Rosario Gagliardi (1690-1762) and Giovanni Battista Vaccarini (1702-1768) whose professional activity, almost synchronous, identifies the time, indicatively included between 1720 and 1750, whe…
Incisioni, immagini e architettura: alcune osservazioni
2013
Between the 16th and the 17th century Europe saw the release of an immense amount of architecture prints pursuing a practical purpose : we are dealing with models for a public of professionals and architects. Though the importance of the phenomenon has been underestimated by historiography, it reaches a noticeable size in geographical areas usually considered peripheral such like Sicily. Nowadays the digital filing systems can provide a fundamental instrument for a deeper understanding of both the users’ behaviour and the assimilation/selection mechanisms orienting the professional practice.
