The dynamics of sodium in sodium disilicate: Channel relaxation and sodium diffusion

2001

We use molecular dynamics computer simulations to study the dynamics of amorphous (Na_2O)2(SiO_2). We find that the Na ions move in channels embedded in a SiO_2 matrix. The characteristic distance between these channels gives rise to a prepeak in the structure factor at around q=0.95 A^-1. The dynamics of sodium is given by a fast process which can be seen in the incoherent scattering function and a slow process which is seen in the coherent function. The relaxation time of the latter coincides with the alpha-relaxation time of the matrix. The Kohlrausch exponent of the fast process for q>1.6 A^1 is the same as the von Schweidler exponent for the slow one, demonstrating that the two proc…

Introduction to Wave Turbulence Formalisms for Incoherent Optical Waves

2016

We provide an introduction to different wave turbulence formalisms describing the propagation of partially incoherent optical waves in nonlinear media. We consider the nonlinear Schrodinger equation as a representative model accounting for a nonlocal or a noninstantaneous nonlinearity, as well as higher-order dispersion effects. We discuss the wave turbulence kinetic equation describing, e.g., wave condensation or wave thermalization through supercontinuum generation; the Vlasov formalism describing incoherent modulational instabilities and the formation of large scale incoherent localized structures in analogy with long-range gravitational systems; and the weak Langmuir turbulence formalis…

Optical wave turbulence: Toward a unified nonequilibrium thermodynamic formulation of statistical nonlinear optics

2014

International audience; The nonlinear propagation of coherent optical fields has been extensively explored in the framework of nonlinear optics, while the linear propagation of incoherent fields has been widely studied in the framework of statistical optics. However, these two fundamental fields of optics have been mostly developed independently of each other, so that a satisfactory understanding of statistical nonlinear optics is still lacking. This article is aimed at reviewing a unified theoretical formulation of statistical nonlinear optics on the basis of the wave turbulence theory, which provides a nonequilibrium thermodynamic description of the system of incoherent nonlinear waves. W…

Temporal Dynamics of Incoherent Nonlinear Waves

2014

We review different formalisms describing incoherent waves: the wave turbulence kinetic equation, the Vlasov equation in analogy with Gravitation, the weak Langmuir turbulence equation describing spectral solitons and incoherent dispersive shocks.

The dynamics of melts containing mobile ions: computer simulations of sodium silicates

2003

We present the results of large-scale computer simulations in order to discuss the structural and dynamic properties of sodium silicate melts with the compositions (Na2O)2(SiO2) (NS2) and (Na2O)20(SiO2) (NS20). We show that, compared to silica (SiO2), these systems exhibit additional intermediate range order on intermediate length scales that stem from the tetrahedral network structure. By means of intermediate-scattering functions, we characterize the dynamics of sodium in the system under consideration. Whereas in NS2 the incoherent scattering functions for Na decay much faster to zero than the coherent ones for Na–Na, in NS20 this different behaviour of the incoherent and coherent functi…

Investigation of the Electromagnetic Radiation Emitted by Sub-GeV Electrons in a Bent Crystal.

2015

The radiation emitted by 855 MeV electrons via planar channeling and volume reflection in a $30.5\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$-thick bent Si crystal has been investigated at the MAMI (Mainzer Mikrotron) accelerator. The spectral intensity was much more intense than for an equivalent amorphous material, and peaked in the MeV range in the case of channeling radiation. Differently from a straight crystal, also for an incidence angle larger than the Lindhard angle, the spectral intensity remains nearly as high as for channeling. This is due to volume reflection, for which the intensity remains high at a large incidence angle over the whole angular acceptance, which is equal t…

Transport of Mobile Particles in an Immobile Environment: Computer Simulations of Sodium Silicates

2007

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of various sodium silicate melts, (Na2O)x(SiO2) with x=2, 3, 20, are presented. In these systems, the mobility of sodium ions is much higher, often by orders of magnitude, than that of the silicon and oxygen atoms forming a tetrahedral network structure. We show that the high mobility of sodium is intimately related to the chemical ordering in sodium silicates. A network of percolating sodium-rich channels is formed in the static structure that serve as diffusion channels for the sodium ions. This channel network is revealed in static structure factors by a prepeak at the wavenumber q=0.95 A-1. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments of sodium silicate m…

Giant collective incoherent shock waves in strong turbulence

2016

Contrary to conventional coherent shocks, we show theoretically and experimentally that nonlocal turbulent flows lead to the emergence of large-scale incoherent shock waves, which constitute a collective phenomenon of the incoherent field as a whole.
