Collagen copolymer posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens for hyperopia correction: three-year follow-up.

2013

Purpose To assess the efficacy, predictability, safety, and stability of the Visian V3 Implantable Collamer Lens posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (PC pIOL) for moderate to high hyperopia. Setting Private clinic, Oviedo, Spain. Design Prospective nonrandomized clinical study. Methods The uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, manifest refraction, endothelial cell density, intraocular pressure (IOP), central vault, and adverse events were evaluated for 3 years postoperatively. Results The study comprised 73 eyes of 44 patients. The mean spherical equivalent decreased from +4.84 diopters (D) ± 1.6 (SD) (range +1.00 to +7.75 D) preoperatively to −0.13 ± 0.39 …

Reliability and Validity of a New Objective Tool for Low Back Pain Functional Assessment

2011

Study design Classification and functional assessment model for nonspecific low back pain (LBP) patients and controls on the basis of kinematic analysis parameters. Objective Develop a logistic regression model using kinematic analysis variables to (1) discriminate between LBP patients and controls and (2) obtain objective parameters for LBP functional assessment. Summary of background data Functional assessment of spinal disorders has been carried out traditionally by means of subjective scales. Objective functional techniques have been developed, which usually involve the application of external loads or the analysis of highly standardized trunk flexion-extension maneuvers. Few studies ha…

Change in active transportation and weight gain in pregnancy

2016

Background: Pregnancy is characterised by large weight gain over a short period, and often a notable change in mode of transportation. This makes pregnancy suitable for examining the plausible, but in the scientific literature still unclear, association between active transportation and weight gain. We hypothesize that women continuing an active mode of transportation to work or school from pre- to early pregnancy will have a lower gestational weight gain (GWG) than those who change to a less active mode of transportation. Methods: We analysed prospective data from the Norwegian Fit for Delivery (NFFD) trial. Between September 2009 and February 2013 606 women were consecutively enrolled in …

Chromosomal aberrations in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis.

1990

Chromosomal aberrations in untreated lymphocyte cultures, bleomycin (BLM)-induced aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) in the peripheral blood lymphocytes of 11 patients suffering from primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and 14 matched control individuals were analysed. The lymphocytes of the PBC patients had on average a lower mitotic index (2.3) compared with controls (3.5) in the untreated cultures. The mean baseline rate of aberrations of the cultured lymphocytes of the patients was 5.3 aberrations per 100 metaphases (%); this was significantly different (P = 0.0291) from that of the controls with a mean of 2.3%. In lymphocytes of the patients and controls, most of the aberratio…

Maternal-fetal Complications in Pregnancy: A Retrospective Comparison Between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

2021

Abstract Background The aim of the study was a retrospective comparison of the differences in maternal-foetal outcomes between women with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM). Methods A cohort of 135 patients with pregestational diabetes, 73 with T1DM (mean age 29 ± 5 years) and 62 with T2DM (mean age 33 ± 6 years), in intensive insulin treatment throughout pregnancy were evaluated. Clinical and metabolic parameters and the prevalence of maternal and foetal complications were assessed. Results Women with T1DM showed lower pregestational BMI (p < 0.001), pregestational weight (p < 0.001), weight at delivery (p < 0.001), ∆_total_insulin requirement (IR) at the first, s…

Clinical significance of increased intraabdominal pressure in severe acute pancreatitis.

2002

The aim of the study was to assess whether increased intra-abdominal pressure affects the clinical course and reflects on the effectiveness of the conservative treatment in patients with severe acute pancreatitis. Data on 37 consecutive patients with severe acute pancreatitis that were collected prospectively included APACHE II score, daily measurement of the intra-abdominal pressure, and clinical routine. Group A consisted of 26 patients with intra-abdominal pressure < 25 cm/H 2 O during their treatment period, and group B consisted of 11 patients with intraabdominal pressure ≥ 25 cm/H 2 O. SIRS, MODS, complication rate and mortality were analysed. The age, APACHE II scores and hospital st…

Drop-out and treatment outcome of outpatient cognitive-behavioral therapy for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

2013

In the present study, drop-out-analyses were carried out for a manual-based cognitive–behavioral therapy for 104 females with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), in the service setting of a university outpatient clinic (naturalistic setting). A total of 22.9% of patients with AN terminated therapy prematurely (drop-outs), compared to 40.6% of patients with BN. Group differences between drop-outs and completers show that the group of drop-outs with BN had higher values in the depression score at the start of therapy and was almost two times more likely to have a comorbid disorder (odds ratio 1.69), whereas drop-outs with AN had higher values in the outcome-scale drive for thinnes…

Clinical evaluation of an Er:YAG laser combined with scaling and root planing for non-surgical periodontal treatment

2003

Changes in Periodontal Parameters and C-Reactive Protein After Pregnancy.

2016

This study assesses hormonal, inflammatory, and periodontal changes in pregnant women and postpartum in the absence of periodontal treatment, and seeks to determine any correlations among these parameters.A longitudinal, observational study of 117 pregnant women (aged 23 to 42 years) was undertaken in a private gynecologic center between weeks 32 and 35 of pregnancy and 6 to 8 weeks after delivery. Levels of progesterone and C-reactive protein (CRP) in plasma were determined, as well as periodontal indices, including: 1) plaque index (PI); 2) bleeding on probing (BOP); 3) probing depth (PD); and 4) clinical attachment level (CAL).Postpartum progesterone and CRP declined sharply from 90.85 ±…

The effect of a prenatal lifestyle intervention on glucose metabolism: Results of the Norwegian Fit for Delivery randomized controlled trial

2017

Background: The effectiveness of prenatal lifestyle intervention to prevent gestational diabetes and improve maternal glucose metabolism remains to be established. The Norwegian Fit for Delivery (NFFD) randomized, controlled trial studied the effect of a combined lifestyle intervention provided to a general population, and found significantly lower gestational weight gain among intervention participants but no improvement in obstetrical outcomes or the proportion of large infants. The aim of the present study is to examine the effect of the NFFD intervention on glucose metabolism, including an assessment of the subgroups of normal-weight and overweight/obese participants. Methods: Healthy, …
