Optimum core dimension for minimizing proximity effect losses of an AC inductor for a galvanically isolated PV inverter

In this paper, it is shown how winding proximity effect losses in an existing AC inductor can be reduced without changing the actual winding. Instead, the core dimensions are changed with significant effects. For this purpose, Maxwell (ANSOFT) electromagnetic software package is used to investigate flux patterns and their influence on eddy current losses in the windings. Various core dimensions are analyzed with respect to flux patterns, and a design where the flux encloses a minimum number of winding layers is found. Investigation of PCB-based Inductive Sensors Orientation for Corona Partial Discharge Detection

This paper presents an experimental investigation of two different printed circuit board (PCB) inductive sensors, with meander and non-spiral shapes, to assess their capabilities and best orientation for corona partial discharge (PD) detection. First, simulations with the Ansys HFSS software are performed in order to evaluate the equivalent electrical circuit of the two sensors and their 2d radiation patterns. The meander sensors presented a resonant frequency of 600 MHz, while it was around 1.1 GHz for the non-spiral. In this paper, we show that novel autonomous chaotic oscillators based on one or two bipolar junction transistors and a limited number of passive components can be obtained via random search with suitable heuristics. Chaos is a pervasive occurrence in these circuits, particularly after manual adjustment of a variable resistor placed in series with the supply voltage source. Following this approach, 49 unique circuits generating chaotic signals when physically realized were designed, representing the largest collection of circuits of this kind to date. Due to the increasing number and complexity of the available functions, modern handheld devices require higher and higher current slew rates. Customers' requirements lead to a growing interest in longer-lasting power, fast transient response power supply systems and minimization of system weight, volume and cost. Fuel cell based hybrid systems are designed to meet all requirements. In this paper, a fuel cell-supercapacitor hybrid power supply for portable applications is proposed. Development of an Inductive NIS Thermometer

We have studied an inductive readout for normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions by using on-chip planar inductors and a DC SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) to develop a sensitive and fast thermometer for studies of nanoscale heat conduction and bolometry. Our initial results show the feasibility of the concept, with a good sensitivity for temperatures below 1 K for aluminum as the superconductor when voltage biased close to the superconductor energy gap. peerReviewed
EMI Filter Re-Design in a SMPS with Inductor in Saturation

This paper analyzes the design issues of the input EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference) filter's in a switching mode power supply where the power inductor is operated in saturation. Starting with a SMPS equipped with linear inductor, the input filter is firstly designed to comply with Standards. Then, a new inductor with a smaller core size is employed in the same SMPS to exploit saturation. The EMI filter is re-designed, taking into account the increase of EMI introduced by the non-linear operation of the inductor. Finally, the reduction of the inductor's size and cost is compared with the increased size and cost of the EMI filter.

Implementation of compact VLSI FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons

In this paper we show a low power and very compact VLSI implementation of a FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron for large network implementations. The circuit consists of only 17 small transistors and two capacitors and consumes less than 23 muW. It is composed of a nonlinear resistor and a lossy active inductor. We demonstrate that a simple low Q active inductor can be used instead of a complex one because the parasitic series resistor can be easily embedded to the FitzHugh-Nagumo model. We also perform a statistical analysis to check the robustness of the circuit against mismatch.
