A self-routing protocol for distributed consensus on logical information
2010
In this paper, we address decision making problems, depending on a set of input events, with networks of dynamic agents that have partial visibility of such events. Previous work by the authors proposed so-called logical consensus approach, by which a network of agents, that can exchange binary values representing their local estimates of the events, is able to reach a unique and consistent decision. The approach therein proposed is based on the construction of an iterative map, whose computation is centralized and guaranteed under suitable conditions on the input visibility and graph connectivity. Under the same conditions, we extend the approach in this work by allowing the construction o…
Moving across the static magnetic field of a 1.5 T MRI scanner: Analysing compliance with Directive 2013/35/EU
2018
Abstract Does the exposure of magnetic resonance imaging personnel to static magnetic fields fully comply with Directive 2013/35/EU? Despite the obligation to satisfy this question, a general answer cannot be provided, nor are final satisfying good practices methods for exposure assessment currently available. In order to contribute to fix this problem, three different 1.5 T scanners are analysed and – by a new theoretical insight – a positive answer is provided.
Adaptive control of a class of strict-feedback time-varying nonlinear systems with unknown control coefficients
2018
Abstract In this paper, robust adaptive control of a class of strict-feedback nonlinear systems with unknown control directions is investigated. A novel Nussbaum-type function is developed and a key theorem is drawn which involves quantifying the addition of multiple Nussbaum functions with different control directions in a single inequality. Global stability of the closed-loop system and asymptotic stabilization of system output are proved. A simulation example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.
Functional design of power-split CVTs: An uncoupled hierarchical optimized model
2017
Abstract This paper provides a new model for the preliminary design of compound power-split CVTs. Unlike the existing models, the presented method allows the engineers to prioritize functionality and efficiency of the transmission, while delaying the choice of the involved gear sets’ layout as long as possible. The design approach follows a specific priority order, and each step deals with one particular issue, without mutual interference. A smart design-chart eases the assessment and the comparison of the only eligible alternatives, and eventually leads to a final feasible constructive scheme, which can be an excellent concept for further optimization and implementation. Moreover, the mode…
Management of uncertain pairwise comparisons in AHP through probabilistic concepts
2019
Abstract Fast and judicious decision-making is paramount for the success of many activities and processes. However, various degrees of difficulty may affect the achievement of effective and optimal solutions. Decisions should ideally meet the best trade-off among as many of the involved factors as possible, especially in the case of complex problems. Substantial cognitive and technical skills are indispensable, while not always sufficient, to carry out optimal evaluations. One of the most common causes of wrong decisions derives from uncertainty and vagueness in making forecasts or attributing judgments. The literature shows numerous efforts towards the optimization and modeling of uncertai…
Simulation of parallel mechanisms for motion cueing generation in vehicle simulators using AM-FM bi-modulated signals
2018
Abstract The use of robotic motion platforms in vehicle simulators is relatively common. However, the process of testing and tuning the so-called washout algorithms, used for motion cueing generation in motion-based vehicle simulators, is complex. This process can be reduced in cost, simplified, improved, shortened and performed safer if virtual motion platforms are used instead of real devices. This paper deals with identifying a method to perform a fast but reliable simulation of parallel mechanisms to be used for motion cueing generation. The method relies on the use of Laplacian polynomial transfer function models by means of using AM-FM bi-modulated signals as reference inputs to achie…
Automatic Segmentation Using a Hybrid Dense Network Integrated With an 3D-Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling Module for Computed Tomography (CT) Imaging
2020
Computed tomography (CT) with a contrast-enhanced imaging technique is extensively proposed for the assessment and segmentation of multiple organs, especially organs at risk. It is an important factor involved in the decision making in clinical applications. Automatic segmentation and extraction of abdominal organs, such as thoracic organs at risk, from CT images are challenging tasks due to the low contrast of pixel values surrounding other organs. Various deep learning models based on 2D and 3D convolutional neural networks have been proposed for the segmentation of medical images because of their automatic feature extraction capability based on large labeled datasets. In this paper, we p…
Protocol: Literature review on the psychometric properties of the short versions of the scales of social desirability in the answers to competency se…
2018
[EN] Research in business organization in general and talent management (in university or professional students) uses in many cases self-administered questionnaires as a source of data to assess people's competencies. In clinical psychology, it has been shown that self-evaluations of behaviors may present a bias of social desirability. However, even in this field of research it is not usual to measure its effect when taking data. Our work proposes a protocol to find a set of scales of social desirability (SD) with less than 20 items that are valid and reliable. We also intend to identify if SD scales are associated with the self-assessments of some transversal competences.
PROLISEAN: A New Security Protocol for Programmable Matter
2021
The vision for programmable matter is to create a material that can be reprogrammed to have different shapes and to change its physical properties on demand. They are autonomous systems composed of a huge number of independent connected elements called particles. The connections to one another form the overall shape of the system. These particles are capable of interacting with each other and take decisions based on their environment. Beyond sensing, processing, and communication capabilities, programmable matter includes actuation and motion capabilities. It could be deployed in different domains and will constitute an intelligent component of the IoT. A lot of applications can derive fro…
Vehicle routing with private and shared delivery locations
2021
Abstract The rapid growth of e-commerce has led to an increase of home delivery requests. Providing efficient distribution systems for services on the last mile has become a challenging issue for logistics companies, where a trade-off between the classical approaches, attended home delivery (AHD) and usage of shared delivery locations (SDLs) has been identified. AHD provides a higher quality of service but implies very high costs for the company, while usage of SDL requires customers to perform the very last mile by themselves. For companies, this bears the risk of a decrease in the perceived service quality. However, due to consolidation effects, transportation costs can be considerably mi…
