The effect of knowledge spillovers on productivity growth inequalities in Spanish regions

2004

We investigate the impact of local and foreign forms of knowledge spillover on productivity growth inequalities in Spanish regions. In each sector and region such inequalities will depend on the innovative capacity of the region and on local spillovers emanating from proximity to innovation producers and from the composition of economic activity in the region. Foreign spillovers will be mainly from trade with other regions or countries. Panel estimation results indicate that local sector human capital and specialisation patterns, public-R&D efforts—both local and from other regions—and international technological imports reduce these growth differentials. The regional level of developm…

New perspectives on old inequalities: Italy’s north–south divide

2020

Italy’s regional inequalities are more substantial and persistent than any other European country. They pertain to fundamental economic indicators (income, productivity, employment) and to many relevant features of the socio-institutional environment (the quality of institutions, education attainments, government and bureaucratic efficiency, etc.). The 2008–13 crisis further exacerbated divergences, with a collapse of capital accumulation and unwelcome demographic shocks (brain drains, migrations, etc.). This paper contributes to this rich literature with a specific focus on the increase of ‘within-south inequalities’ and investigates some socioeconomic determinants and processes that can e…

The impact of the coronavirus crisis on European societies. What have we learnt and where do we go from here? – Introduction to the COVID volume

2021

The coronavirus pandemic, which first impacted European societies in early 2020, has created a twofold crisis by combining a health threat with economic turmoil. While the crisis has affected all European societies very significantly, its impact varies across countries, social groups, and societal domains. In an effort to provide a first overview of the effect of the coronavirus crisis, in this editorial we discuss contributions of 58 papers published as part of this special issue. These early research papers illustrate the varied impact of the pandemic on various areas of social life. The first group of studies in this special issue analyzes the effect of the pandemic on social inequalitie…

The impact of cultural and creative industries on the wealth of countries, regions and municipalities

2021

[EN] This paper compares the total impact of cultural and creative industries (CCIs) on per capita income of countries, regions and municipalities. We estimate the total effects of CCIs in 78 developed and developing countries in 5 continents, in 275 European regions and in 518 municipalities in the European region of Valencia, using data obtained from multiple databases and nonparametric local linear least squares. The average effects of CCIs are positive in the three territorial scales, in both low- and high-income locations, and increase in conjunction with increases in development, with high and very high developed places showing greater impacts. CCIs are, thus, a powerful resource for …

THE BETWEEN-COUNTRY INEQUALITY: DOES IT HINDER THE COMPETITIVENESS?

2012

Nowadays the competitiveness is the significant premise to enhance the inhabitants well being. From this perspective on competitiveness has been given great attention in the literature and competitiveness hindrances have been studied as well. However the link between inequality and competitiveness is less studied, particular in case of the European Union. Thereby the author attempts to clarify the role of the between-country income inequality in hindering the competitiveness. The data analysis shows that lower income countries have less ability towards strengthening the nation economy competitiveness thereby reducing overall European Union competitiveness level. Obviously the country's compe…

Socio-economic inequalities and organized crime: An empirical analysis

2020

In this chapter we contribute to the recent literature (e.g., Istat, 2010, Acciari et al., 2016, Guell et al., 2017) that provides evidence that inequality is high and social mobility is low in the Italian regions and prov-inces where organized crime is widespread such as those of Southern Italy. We complement this line of work in two respects. First, using a novel pan-el dataset at the regional level for the period 1985-2014 we investigate the relationship between inequality and organized crime at the regional level, exploiting both time and cross-sectional variation. Second, we assess the role of social mobility in organized crime. Our main finding is that higher inequality leads to highe…

Not all group members are created equal: heterogeneous abilities in inter-group contests

2020

AbstractCompetition between groups is ubiquitous in social and economic life, and typically occurs between groups that are not created equal. Here we experimentally investigate the implications of this general observation on the unfolding of symmetric and asymmetric competition between groups that are either homogeneous or heterogeneous in the ability of their members to contribute to the success of the group. Our main finding is that relative to the benchmark case in which two homogeneous compete against each other, heterogeneity within groups per se has no discernable effect on competition, while introducing heterogeneity between groups leads to a significant intensification of conflict a…

2019

Katsausteksti tarkastelee kansalaisrohkeutta ja kansalaistottelemattomuutta useista eri näkökulmista käsin, pohtien muun muassa yksilön ja kollektiivien organisoitumista epäoikeudenmukaisuuden ja epätasa-arvon vastustamiseksi, kansalaisuuteen liittyviä jännitteitä, erilaisia demokratiakäsityksiä, tutkijoiden yhteiskunnallista roolia ja vastuuta sekä kriittisen akateemisen tiedontuotannon merkitystä.

Belonging, relevance and difference: discourse on gender boundaries

2021
