Abstract Ageing impacts negatively on the development of the immune system and its ability to fight pathogens. Progressive changes in the T-cell and B-cell systems over the lifespan of individuals have a major impact on the capacity to respond to immune challenges. The cumulative age-associated changes in immune competence are termed immunosenescence that is characterized by changes where adaptive immunity deteriorates, while innate immunity is largely conserved or even upregulated with age. Noninfectious uveitis: strategies to optimize treatment compliance and adherence.

Noninfectious uveitis includes a heterogenous group of sight-threatening ocular and systemic disorders. Significant progress has been made in the treatment of noninfectious uveitis in recent years, particularly with regard to the effective use of corticosteroids and non-corticosteroid immunosuppressive drugs, including biologic agents. All of these therapeutic approaches are limited, however, by any given patient's ability to comply with and adhere to their prescribed treatment. In fact, compliance and adherence are among the most important patient-related determinants of treatment success. We discuss strategies to optimize compliance and adherence.

The treatment of ARDS continues to pose major challenges for intensive care physicians in the 21st century with mortality rates still reaching up to 50% in severe cases. Further research efforts are needed to better understand the complex pathophysiology of this disease. There are different well-established animal models to induce acute lung injury but none has been able to adequately mimic the complex pathomechanisms of ARDS. The most crucial factor for the development of this condition is the damage to the alveolar capillary unit. Interleukin 17 genes as mediators of inflammatory responses in Ciona intestinalis.

Inflammation is a complex reaction of host defence mechanisms aiming at neutralization of an insult and restoring normal tissue structure and function. In human IL-17 is T-cell derived cytokine plays a key role in the clearance of extracellular bacteria promoting cell infiltration and production of several cytokines and chemokines. Here, we report on three Ciona intestinalis IL-17 homologues (CiIL17-1, CiIL17-2, CiIL17-3). The gene organization, phylogenetic tree and modeling supported the close relationship with the mammalian IL-17A and IL-17F suggesting that the C. intestinalis IL-17 genes share a common ancestor in the chordate lineages. Since the publication of our meta-analysis it has come to light that we inadvertently categorised one study (Gale et al. 2013) as a cross sectional study instead of its true design as a longitudinal study. We have recalculated the analyses affected which is isolated to the cross sectional longitudinal biomarkers of C reactive protein. The updated analyses have not significantly changed our findings regarding CRP or the narrative of the paper in any perceptible way. Specifically, the new OR for CRP longitudinal studies is now 1.08 (95%CI 0.87–1.34) compared to a previous value of 1.06 (95%CI: 0.78–1.44) (please see the new Fig. 1a).
