User participation in knowledge update of expert systems

1997

Abstract Applying the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) of persuasion we conducted an experiment to examine the effect of participation of users in the design process on their acceptance of system recommendations and revision of their original decisions. Results of our study indicate that two different types of information processing occur when subjects are reviewing the expert system recommendations. 1. (i) For users who have a high perceived level of participation in updating the knowledge of the ES, ambiguity of the decision setting is the primary determinant affecting acceptance of the recommendation from the ES. 2. (ii) For users who have a low perceived level of participation in upda…

Drugs and Nondrugs:  An Effective Discrimination with Topological Methods and Artificial Neural Networks

2003

A set of topological and structural descriptors has been used to discriminate general pharmacological activity. To that end, we selected a group of molecules with proven pharmacological activity including different therapeutic categories, and another molecule group without any activity. As a method for pharmacological activity discrimination, an artificial neural network was used, dividing molecules into active and inactive, to train the network and externally validate it. The following plot frequency distribution diagrams were used: a function of the number of drugs within a value interval, and the output value of the neural network versus these values. Pharmacological distribution diagram…

The problem and the solution of accounting in a text

1993

Abstract An interpretative reading of accounting texts published in management accounting journals is offered. The selected articles were read many times, but the phenomenological hermeneutic description is developed through a process of “three readings.” The first reading proposes that the texts share a pattern of preach: They start with an introduction, describe a failing accounting, and remind the reader that through change, better accounting is achievable. In the second reading it is noticed, however, that the idea of “defining a problem and finding a solution with the help of accounting” receives a very different expression in different articles. Consequently, the third reading suggest…

Sobre verdad, mentira y posverdad. Elementos para una filosofía de la información

2020

Reconsidering the Role of Research Method Guidelines for Qualitative, Mixed-methods, and Design Science Research

2019

Guidelines for different qualitative research genres have been proposed in information systems (IS). As these guidelines are outlined for conducting and evaluating good research, studies may be denied publication simply because they do not follow a prescribed methodology. This can result in “checkbox” compliance, where the guidelines become more important than the study. We argue that guidelines can only be used to evaluate what good research is if there is evidence that they lead to certain good research outcomes. Currently, the guidelines do not present such evidence. Instead, when it is presented, the evidence is often an authority argument or evidence of popularity with usability exampl…

A framework for sign language sentence recognition by common sense context

2007

This correspondence proposes a complete framework for sign language recognition that integrates a commonsense engine in order to deal with sentence recognition. The proposed system is based on a multilevel architecture that allows modeling and managing of the knowledge of the recognition process in a simple and robust way. The final abstraction level of this architecture introduces the semantic context and the analysis of the correctness of a sentence given in a sequence of recognized signs. Experimentations are presented using a set of signs from the Italian sign language (LIS) for domotic applications. The implemented system maintains a high recognition rate when the set of signs grows, c…

Fingerprint classification based on deep learning approaches: Experimental findings and comparisons

2021

Biometric classification plays a key role in fingerprint characterization, especially in the identification process. In fact, reducing the number of comparisons in biometric recognition systems is essential when dealing with large-scale databases. The classification of fingerprints aims to achieve this target by splitting fingerprints into different categories. The general approach of fingerprint classification requires pre-processing techniques that are usually computationally expensive. Deep Learning is emerging as the leading field that has been successfully applied to many areas, such as image processing. This work shows the performance of pre-trained Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs…

Rotational Motion of Linear Molecules in Three Dimensions. A Path-Integral Monte Carlo Approach

1994

Abstract A path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulation method for the rotational motion of linear molecules in three dimensions is presented. The technique is applied to an H2 impurity in a static crystal-field. The resulting orientational distributions from quantum and classical simulations are obtained and discussed. The algorithm suffers from the “sign problem” of quantum simulations. However, as can be seen by comparing the low temperature simulation result to the variational solution of the Schrodinger equation, the PIMC method captures the quantum fluctuations.

A Chemical Index Inspired by Biological Plastic Evolution:  Valence-Isoelectronic Series of Aromatics

2004

Plastic evolution is a new perspective of the evolutionary process conjugating the effect, on one hand, of the acquired characters and, on the other, of the relationships that emerge among the principle of evolutionary indeterminacy, the principle of morphologic determination, and natural selection. Plastic evolution is applied to design the coordination index Ic. Ic is used to characterize the valence-isoelectronic series of cyclopentadiene, benzene, toluene, and styrene and compared to charge indices for dipole moment. The parameters needed to calculate Ic are minus the standard enthalpy of formation T, molecular surface area S, and molecular weight W. With the exception of the O heteromo…
