Reverse Modelling Process to support of a Flemish Wooden Altarpiece Physical Restoration

2021

This study focuses on digital Computer Aided Restoration procedures to guide the complex physical restoration of an artwork, innovating and implementing traditional survey methods. As a case study some results are presented of a complex and articulated conservative restoration project on a sculpted and painted wing altar, preserved in the Regional Gallery of Sicily in Palazzo Abatellis, Palermo. The application of non-invasive and high information density 3D survey methodologies allowed to record and integrate into a unique digital platform (designed within the UnReal Engine) a wide quantity of heterogeneous data which document the work's state (diagnostic analyses, graphical annotation, hi…

Facebook as a Small World: a topological hypothesis

2011

Facebook is becoming a pervasive entity as its social, cultural and media ramifications grow deep and entrenched in our daily life. Its nature of a complex system of interactions, bearing a strong similarity to networks built through individual choices and systems shaped by evolu- tionary pressure, makes it an interesting target for research. Scale-free Small World networks, recently popularized by Barabasi, are a topological class pertaining to both these domains, whose members have resilience to disruption and short intermediate connections between nodes. In this paper we show that the topological structure of a specific subset of Facebook, gathered using data from a self-report online qu…

Iconic framework for cooperative coding

2018

The description of an innovative framework built on top of Web-based visual programming environment is the primary aim of this contribution. In the last decade, many frameworks oriented to visual languages have been introduced in literature to improve the skill on programming languages, but at the best of our knowledge, no framework has been specially designed to support collaborative work on heterogeneous distributed environments. Therefore, SIRENE introduces a new framework in which beginners and experts can cooperate to develop algorithms by using a visual and iconic paradigm. Students, in the classroom or connected from everywhere, can be involved into the definition of the algorithm, c…

Exploring the effects of gender, age, income and employment status on consumer response to mobile advertising campaigns

2008

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the effects gender, age, income and employment status on consumer response to short message service (SMS)‐oriented direct‐response requests or a call‐to‐action tactic in a television advertisement or program, consumer's participation in SMS sweepstakes or other competitions, and consumer uptake of mobile services such as ringtones, logos, screensavers and wallpapers ordered by SMS message.Design/methodology/approachThe data used in this study were collected via an online survey. A total of 4,062 consumers responded to this survey. Cross‐tabulation and binary logistic regression were used to examine the associations between the explanatory varia…

Accurate Graph Filtering in Wireless Sensor Networks

2020

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are considered as a major technology enabling the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm. The recent emerging Graph Signal Processing field can also contribute to enabling the IoT by providing key tools, such as graph filters, for processing the data associated with the sensor devices. Graph filters can be performed over WSNs in a distributed manner by means of a certain number of communication exchanges among the nodes. But, WSNs are often affected by interferences and noise, which leads to view these networks as directed, random and time-varying graph topologies. Most of existing works neglect this problem by considering an unrealistic assumption that claims the…

WAVELET-BASED ESTIMATION OF MODAL PARAMETERS OF A VEHICLE INVOLVED IN A FULL-SCALE IMPACT

2012

In this paper, a wavelet-based approach is presented for estimation of vehicle modal parameters. The acceleration of a colliding vehicle is measured in its center of gravity — this crash pulse contains detailed information about vehicle behavior throughout a collision. Three types of signal analysis are elaborated here: time domain analysis (i.e. description of kinematics of a vehicle in time domain), the frequency analysis (identification of the parameters of the crash pulse in frequency domain), and the time-frequency analysis, which comprises those techniques that study a signal in both the time and frequency domains simultaneously, using Morlet wavelet properties. The frequency compone…

SIGNAL ANALYSIS AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A VEHICLE CRASH TEST WITH A FIXED SAFETY BARRIER BASED ON HAAR WAVELETS

2011

Author's version of an article published in the journal: International Journal of Wavelets, Multiresolution and Information Processing. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1142/s0219691311003979 This paper deals with the wavelet-based performance analysis of the safety barrier for use in a full-scale test. The test involves a vehicle, a Ford Fiesta, which strikes the safety barrier at a prescribed angle and speed. The vehicle speed before the collision was measured. Vehicle accelerations in three directions at the center of gravity were measured during the collision. The yaw rate was measured with a gyro meter. Using normal speed and high-speed video cameras, the beha…

A mutual GrabCut method to solve co-segmentation

2013

Publised version of an article from the journal:Eurasip Journal on Image and Video Processing. Also available on SpringerLink:http://dx.doi.org/10.1186/1687-5281-2013-20. Open Access Co-segmentation aims at segmenting common objects from a group of images. Markov random field (MRF) has been widely used to solve co-segmentation, which introduces a global constraint to make the foreground similar to each other. However, it is difficult to minimize the new model. In this paper, we propose a new Markov random field-based co-segmentation model to solve co-segmentation problem without minimization problem. In our model, foreground similarity constraint is added into the unary term of MRF model ra…

Social Media Data in an Augmented Reality System for Situation Awareness Support in Emergency Control Rooms

2021

AbstractDuring crisis situations, emergency operators require fast information access to achieve situation awareness and make the best possible decisions. Augmented reality could be used to visualize the wealth of user-generated content available on social media and enable context-adaptive functions for emergency operators. Although emergency operators agree that social media analytics will be important for their future work, it poses a challenge to filter and visualize large amounts of social media data. We conducted a goal-directed task analysis to identify the situation awareness requirements of emergency operators. By collecting tweets during two storms in Germany we evaluated the usefu…
