Facilitating Collaboration

2017

This article explores the potential synergy between computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) and collaboration engineering (CE). Both areas pursue the goal of understanding how to manage interactions in collaborative groups to achieve shared understanding, reduce process losses, and improve performance. By analyzing the research in the two areas, the authors identify several topics where exchange of research findings would be of mutual benefit. For example, research on CE can inform collaboration script research on reducing learners' cognitive load, providing sufficient guidance on the use of tools, and specifying the instructor role during the collaborative learning process. Simila…

Uncertainties and Risks in the Implementation of an E-Learning Information Systems Project in a Higher-Learning Environment: Viewpoints from Estonia

2005

This paper investigates the sorts of risks and uncertainties inherent in implementing an e-learning information systems project in Estonia. The study uses a variation of the Delphi study in eliciting the risk factors or items from experienced top management professionals within the organisation. The main objective of the study is to identify the uncertainties or risks in the implementation of the systems, using the viewpoint of Estonia, which is an emerging economy. The findings of the work indicate that wrong development strategy, staff volatility, change in top management and lack of funding are amongst the top risk factors in implementing e-learning in Estonia. On the other hand, risks …

Population targeted requirements acquisition

2018

ABSTRACTWe use social science theories, design science research methodology, and our experience in five development projects to design principles for selecting or adapting requirements acquisition (RA) techniques for use with populations of customers and users. The information systems (IS) literature has not systematically focused on the adaption of RA techniques to particular populations. We developed a nascent design theory for RA to target specific populations to define functional requirements for new IS. Five reference theories – personal construct theory, theory of disability, diffusion of innovations, social actor theory, and media richness and information synchronicity theory – suppo…

Introduction to the Management of Knowledge Systems Design and Deployment Projects Minitrack

2012

Knowledge systems are increasingly used to support globally distributed work. Projects are a natural means of designing and deploying such systems. There is plenty of literature on the management of information systems design projects and some literature on information systems deployment projects. However, knowledge systems are typically more complex organizationally and socially than most traditional information systems. For example, enterprise resource planning systems typically must be used to get the work done whereas many knowledge systems are voluntary to use. It is reasonable to assume that project management involved in the design and deployment of knowledge systems differs from the…

Access Control Model for Cooperative Healthcare Environments: Modeling and Verification

2016

Integrated use of electronic health records (EHRs) seem both promising and necessary in improving the quality and delivery of health services. This allows healthcare providers access to information they require to provide rapid patient care. Of course, when sensitive information is shared among a group of people within or across organizations, enforceable security and privacy control over the information flow is a key aspect. In this study, an access control model for cooperative healthcare environments is presented. A work-based access control (WBAC) model is proposed by introducing the concept of team role and modifying the user-role assignment model from previous work. Verification indic…

Model independent assertions for integration of heterogeneous schemas

1992

Due to the proliferation of database applications, the integration of existing databases into a distributed or federated system is one of the major challenges in responding to enterprises' information requirements. Some proposed integration techniques aim at providing database administrators (DBAs) with a view definition language they can use to build the desired integrated schema. These techniques leave to the DBA the responsibility of appropriately restructuring schema elements from existing local schemas and of solving inter-schema conflicts. This paper investigates the assertion-based approach, in which the DBA's action is limited to pointing out corresponding elements in the schemas an…

The Role of Agency Theory and Perceived Goal Divergence in IS Continuance: A Replication and Extension Study

2016

Past literature recognizes the power of the well-established information systems continuance theory (ISCT) to explain information systems (IS) continuance. In this study, we integrate constructs from two additional perspectives and discuss their interdependencies with ISCT. We argue that the promising framework proposed by Sorebo et al. [1], which extends ISCT with self-determination theory (SDT), can increase its managerial relevance by adding the variables of users' perceptions of goal divergence and risk aversion, selected from agency theory. The empirical results support Sorebo et al.'s main findings and strongly support the impact of perceived goal divergence on e-learning continuance …

Fostering university-industry collaborations through university teaching

2019

Unversity-industry links and their impact on innovation processes have been widely acknowledged. However, previous studies have mainly examined university-industry knowledge transfer activities from the perspective of the research and third stream missions. This paper goes a step further, analysing such processes from the perspective of the university’s teaching mission. More specifically, it explores how educational crowdsourcing platforms help bring universities and industry together to develop joint activities in undergraduate and graduate programmes. Nine platforms with different business models were examined. A qualitative exploratory approach was adopted to manually collect and analys…

Training, Competence, and Business Performance: Evidence from E-business in European Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

2009

This article examines the relationship between training, competence and performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the context of e-business. Literature review combined with a triangulation of qualitative and quantitative methods were used to investigate these relationships. Data about e-business competences and performance in 339 SMEs in three European countries was combined with data about training supply from 116 providers of e-business related training. The empirical findings document a positive relationship between training, competence and performance and show that training explains variances in e-business competences and performance in terms of efficiency, complementa…
