Improving situation awareness in crisis response teams

2016

In responding to an emergency, the actions of emergency response teams critically depend upon the situation awareness the team members have acquired. Situation awareness, and the design of systems to support it, has been a focus in recent emergency management research. In this paper, we introduce two interventions to the core processes of information processing and information sharing in emergency response teams to analyze their effect on the teams' situation awareness: (1) we enrich raw incoming information by adding a summary of the information received, and (2) we channel all incoming information to a central coordinator who then decides upon further distribution within the team. The eff…

Language in globalised interactive business: adaptation vs. standardisation

2017

We investigate language-related choices made in online firms characterised as 'interactive' and having multiple and varying audiences, in both consumer and business marketing environments. Online language choices and their relatedness with firm strategic and tactical behaviour have little received scrutiny. Using survey data, we investigate the role language plays in online firms. We scrutinise whether or not firms significantly adapt to their targeted markets through language and how such adaptive or standardising behaviour relates with firm internationalisation level, and furthermore, if this behaviour relates with how firms interact with their environment. When studying how firms interac…

Using Social Networks to Enhance Customer Relationship Management

2013

International audience; In recent years, the Web has evolved into an exchange platform. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) must follow this evolution and connect CRM tools to social networks in order to place companies in the center of all the exchanges. We propose, in this article, a community detection approach that identi fies clusters of customers of a company using their explicit and implicit behaviour. Our contribution is the definition of a composite pro le that integrates various informations gathered from di erent applications, such as the information system of the company, the existing CRM, or Twitter. We de ne a similarity measure, between a user and a tag, that takes into ac…

Tecnologías de información y contabilidad de gestión: evidencia empírica de la autoridad portuaria de Valencia

2008

Ports that have good geographical location, efficient management and value-added services have potential for international leadership, as is the case with the Valencia Port Authority, which figures prominently in the international ranking of container ports. Information systems should stimulate the curiosity of organizations, facilitate the process of participatory decision-making and enhance the ability of the organization to cope with changes in the environment. Changes occurring in the environment fully affect the organization and therefore its computer systems. Through the study of the Business Intelligence Systems at the Valencia Port Authority, we seek to reaffirm the assumptions of t…

Analyzing the Concept of Affordances in Information Systems

2016

The affordance concept has penetrated the Information Systems (IS) scholarship as a lens for theorizing the relationship between technology and its users. However, what exactly is it that the researchers are trying to capture when they use this concept? For this essay, we carefully read IS literature to reveal underlying assumptions behind this lens and how it has been adopted. This article reveals three assumptions: 1) whether affordances are identified as intended prior use or emerging in action, 2) whether affordances are functional or non-functional, and 3) whether affordances are potential or actual. We dig into these assumptions and suggest alternatives for further enquiry.

Business Intelligence and Analytics in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises: A Systematic Literature Review

2017

Despite much interest in business intelligence and analytics (BI&A), empirical research shows that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are still lagging behind in the proliferation of BI&A. However, there are no studies found on literature reviewing research on BI&A in SMEs. This paper collects, categorizes, synthesizes, and analyzes 62 articles related to BI&A in SMEs. The identified research topics being addressed in BI&A include: BI&A components, BI&A solutions, Mobile BI&A, Cloud BI&A, BI&A application, BI&A adoption, BI&A implementation, and BI&A benefits. Further, research gaps and directions for future research are presented to facilitate the progression of BI&A in SMEs researc…

The Need of Co-utility for Successful Crowdsourcing

2017

Technological development has promoted the rise and use of the collective intelligence through Internet. To efficiently handle this collective intelligence, several processes have naturally emerged. Crowdsourcing is one of them. By using crowdsourcing, the undertaking of a task can be proposed by a person or organization to the crowd that composes Internet. Although these proposed tasks could vary in their requirements for successful accomplishment, any crowdsourcing initiative always includes different benefits for the promoters of the initiatives and one or more rewards for each person of the crowd. These rewards play a key role because their evaluation by the crowd will condition the num…
