Social Interaction in YouTube Text-Based Polylogues: A Study of Coherence

2012

Since YouTube was launched, its emblematic video-sharing facility has attracted considerable attention as a social networking system of cultural production. In addition to vlogging, YouTube offers a text facility through which YouTubers share and negotiate opinions. However, research into the latter is scarce, especially within language-based disciplines (Androutsopoulos & Beiβwenger 2009; Zelenkauskaite & Herring 2008). This article contributes to addressing this imbalance by focusing on YouTube text-based ‘conversation’ (Herring 2010a). Specifically, it examines coherence in a corpus of YouTube postings in Spanish. Although coherence has been the object of much academic debate in other fo…

Codebook is an effective image representation method. By clustering in local image descriptors, a codebook is shown to be a distinctive image feature and widely applied in object classification. In almost all existing works on codebooks, the building of the visual vocabulary follows a basic routine, that is, extracting local image descriptors and clustering with a user-designated number of clusters. The problem with this routine lies in that building a codebook for each single dataset is not efficient. In order to deal with this problem, we investigate the influence of vocabulary sizes on classification performance and vocabulary universality with the kNN classifier. Experimental results in…

Towards Graphical Query Notation for Semantic Databases

2015

We describe a notation and a tool for schema-enabled visual/diagrammatic creation of SPARQL queries over RDF databases. The notation and the tool support both the standard basic query pattern comprising a main query class and possibly linked condition classes and means for aggregate query definition and placing conditions over aggregates including also aggregation of aggregate results. We discuss the applicability of the tool for ad-hoc query formulation in practical use cases.

Context-aware summary generation for Web pages

2009

General purpose search engines provide users with lists of retrieved documents in response to their queries. The common structure of list elements includes the title of a document, its URL, and small snippet from the text. Snippets are evidence of occurrences of query's keywords in the document. The length of each snippet is just a couple of lines. They cannot play a role of summaries of retrieved documents: In many cases, they are not indicative and users cannot judge on the relevancy of documents. In our approach we use ontology as context description and that ontology will be used to describe user's main interest with respect to wanted summary and help to select weighting of key words an…

Mapping SPARQL Query to temporal logic query based on NμSMV Model Checker to Query Semantic Graphs

2012

International audience; The RDF (W3C standard for metamodeling) language is the most frequently used to represent the semantic graphs. This paper presents a new research combining different fields that are: the semantic web and the model checking. We developed a tool, RDF2NμSMV, which converts RDF graphs into NμSMV language. This conversion aims checking the semantic graphs that have numerous errors of interpretation with the model checker NμSMV in order to verify the consistency of the data. The SPARQL query language is the standard for querying the semantic graph but have a lot of limitations. To this purpose, we define a translation from the SPARQL query language into the temporal logic …

Digital Solutions in the Forest-Based Bioeconomy

2019

This chapter aims to illustrate the potential and significance of forest-based industry to take the lead in the sustainable development of the bio-based economy under digitalization. The digital solutions are transforming the forest-based industry by enabling the real-time end-to-end supply chain visibility, stock level optimization, demand planning, and real-time order status tracking and transparent, speedy, and hassle-free order fulfillment. In addition, increasing diversification corresponds to eco-consciousness, and shift in people’s preferences induces the transformation of forest-based bioeconomy into a digital platform industry. Further, this chapter will highlight the circular econ…

Illusion of knowledge through Facebook news? Effects of snack news in a news feed on perceived knowledge, attitude strength, and willingness for disc…

2020

Abstract Research indicates that using social network sites as a source for news increases perceived knowledge even if, objectively, people fail to acquire knowledge. This might result from the frequent repetition of topics in news posts caused by multiple news outlets posting about the same news topics and the algorithm that favors similar postings. These repeated encounters can have a positive effect on the perception of knowing more, even if actual learning hardly occurs. An experiment (N = 810, representative of German Internet users) tested these assumptions. Participants were assigned to one of four groups and received a news feed with no information, few news posts, many news posts, …
