Photoactivation of Anticancer Ru Complexes in Deep Tissue: How Deep Can We Go?

Activation of anticancer therapeutics such as ruthenium (Ru) complexes is currently a topic of intense investigation. The success of phototherapy relies on photoactivation of therapeutics after the light passes through skin and tissue. In this paper, the photoactivation of anticancer Ru complexes with 671-nm red light through tissue of different thicknesses was studied. Four photoactivatable Ru complexes with different absorption wavelengths were synthesized. Evaluation and management of hemorrhoids: Italian society of colorectal surgery (SICCR) consensus statement

Hemorrhoids are one of the most common medical and surgical diseases and the main reason for a visit to a coloproctologist. This consensus statement was drawn up by the Italian society of colorectal surgery in order to provide practice parameters for an accurate assessment of the disease and consequent appropriate treatment. The authors made a careful search in the main databases (MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase and Cochrane), and all results were classified on the basis of the grade of recommendation (A-C) of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Conformation resolved induced infrared activity: trans- and cis-formic acid isolated in solid molecular hydrogen

We report combined experimental and theoretical studies of infrared absorptions induced in solid molecular hydrogen by different conformers of formic acid (HCOOH, FA). FTIR spectra recorded in the H(2) fundamental region (4120-4160 cm(-1)) reveal a number of relatively strong trans-FA induced Q-branch absorptions that are assigned by studying both FA-doped parahydrogen (pH(2)) and normal hydrogen (nH(2)) samples. The induced H(2) absorptions are also studied for HCOOD doped nH(2) crystals for both the trans and cis conformers that show resolvable differences. A nitroreductase and glutathione responsive nanoplatform for integration of gene delivery and near-infrared fluorescence imaging

A novel platform rationally integrating indocyanine green analogues and an arginine-rich dendritic peptide with both nitroreductase (NTR) and glutathione (GSH) reduction responsive linkers was developed. This multifunctional platform can enable selective and efficient gene delivery and specific turn-on fluorescence imaging in tumors.

The effect of hyperthermia on microcirculatory and metabolic parameters in s.c. DS-sarcomas of different sizes on the hind foot dorsum of SD-rats was investigated. Hyperthermia was carried out using a novel water-filtered, infrared-A radiation technique. Heating was performed at a rate of 0.5 degrees C/min until 44 degrees C was achieved in the tumour centre, which was maintained for 60 min. Using a multichannel laser Doppler flowmeter, red blood cell flux could be assessed continuously and at several sites within the tumour tissue simultaneously. A novel application of an infrared-A (IR-A) radiation source equipped with a water-filter in the radiation path is described, which allows for tumour treatment with a simultaneous combination of localized hyperthermia (HT) and bacteriochlorophyll-serine (Bchl-ser) based photodynamic therapy (PDT). Using this system, the IR-A radiation was used to heat tumours to 43 degrees C for 60 min, while at the same time activating the Bchl-ser which was injected i.v. at a dose of 20 mg/kg, 10 min following commencement of HT.
