Dilute solution properties of polybutadiene modified by 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione

1996

The dilute solution properties of 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione-modified polybutadienes were studied in tetrahydrofuran by static and dynamic light scattering and compared with those from unmodified polybutadiene chains. For the unmodified polymer, the scaling laws were established and the coil interpenetration parameter k f0 was determined in the thermodynamically good solvent tetrahydrofuran ; the chains exhibited common flexible chain behavior. For the modified polybutadiene, the results indicate at infinite dilution a weak extent of intermolecular crosslinking via the urazole groups, coupled with a very high extent of intramolecular ring formation. In order to evaluate the fractio…

Hydrogen bonds in unpolar matrix — Comparison of complexation in polymeric and low molecular-weight systems

1991

By ene-reaction of 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione with double bonds, polar 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazolidine-3,5-dione (phenyl urazole) groups are introduced into unpolar matrices. Hydrogen-bond complexes are formed between two amide-like units. The temperature dependence of complex formation in dilute hydrocarbon medium is obtained from remperature-dependent IR spectra in the region of the C=O stretching vibration. Results obtained for a low molecular-weight model system are compared with modified polybutadienes, where the groups are attached statistically along the polymer backbone. The enthalpy and the entropy of complex formation (ΔH f =−28.6 kJ/mol; ΔS f =−52 J/mol K−1) obtained for the…

Structural induced modifications in blends of polyamide with gamma irradiated low density polyethylene

1992

Abstract Blends of gamma irradiated and unirradiated low density polyethylene and polyamide 6 were made in order to study possible modifications induced by this irradiation. Results indicate that blends with gamma irradiated polyethylene have structure and properties significantly different with respect to blends made with the unirradiated one. This difference has been ascribed to the formation of functionalized groups in the polyethylene chains, which interact with polyamide.

Vibrational spectroscopy in soil and sediment analysis

2014

The literature concerning the use of vibrational spectroscopy for soil and sediment analysis, published in the last years, has been revised in order to provide a picture of the strengths and weaknesses of these direct techniques to characterize soil composition and properties. Many soil components as water, organic matter, like humic substances, and minerals, can be determined together with physicochemical parameters as pH, conductivity or redox potential. The main strategies to obtain sample spectra and to extract, as many as possible, useful information were evaluated, taking into account the progress on chemometrics and discussing the whole analytical process, from sampling to sample pre…

Semicarbazides as gel forming agents for common solvents and liquid crystals

2006

This paper describes the synthesis of 14 new gelling agents with semicarbazide groups as H-bonding motifs and alkyl- and/or azobenzene side groups. They gel solvents like decaline, 1,2-dichlorobenzene and toluene and liquid crystalline mixtures. X-Ray structure analysis shows that the semicarbazides are connected by H-bonds, each molecule to four neighbours. As a result a ribbon is formed with a core of H-bonded semicarbazide groups and alkyl chains sticking to the side. IR measurements show an unchanged H-bonding motif in large crystals and in the gel fibres, even in LC-mixture. During heating the gel melts (rheology), while the H-bonding motif of the crystal disappears (IR and DSC measure…

FT-IR and dielectric study of water/AOT liquid crystals

2000

Abstract In order to explore the influence of microwave radiation on highly viscous microheterogeneous systems, the evolution of structural and dynamical properties of the water/sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) liquid crystals as a function of the molar ratio R (R=[water]/[AOT]) has been investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy and time domain reflectometry. The study emphasises how the progressive hydration of the surfactant head groups is mainly responsible for the structural and dynamical evolution of water/AOT liquid crystals. In particular, it has been found that the state of water at lower R values is strongly perturbed, bulk-like water appears only at R>23 and the water/AOT in…

Cyclometallation reactions in complexes of the type Rh(oq)(CO)[P(o-BrC6F4)Ph2]. The molecular structure of F4)Ph2] (oq = 8-hydroxyquinolinate)

1984

Cyclometallation occurs when a solution of the complex Rh(oq)(CO)(PCBr), (PCBr = 2-bromo-3,4,5,6-tetrafluorophenyldiphenylphosphine; oq = 8-hydroxyquinolinate) in toluene is refluxed, giving Rh(oq)2(PC) (PC = P(C6F4)(C6H5)2) and a dimeric compound, not yet completely characterized, formulated as Rh2Br(oq)(PCBr)2. Rh(oq)2(PC) was characterized by elemental analysis, by conductance measurements, and by 19F, 31P NMR and infrared spectroscopy. Its molecular structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray methods and refined by standard procedures to final agreement factors R and Rw of 0.067 and 0.060 for 5346 observed data. Lattice constants are 15.8494(6), 14.7188(5), 14.6675(5) A and β 96.93…

ChemInform Abstract: In situ DRIFT Spectroscopic Investigation on the Chemical Evolution of Zinc Phosphate Acid-Base Cement.

2010

Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy has been used to follow the chemical evolution of zinc phosphate acid−base cement (ZPC), which has been prepared from unmodified, as well as from aluminum- and zinc-modified orthophosphoric acid. For the first time, amorphous dizinc cyclotetraphosphate octahydrate, Zn2P4O12·8H2O, although hydrolytically instable, has been observed as precursor phase prior to crystallization of α-hopeite, α-Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O, in both systems. Within minutes from onset of mixing the infrared spectrum of unmodified ZPC is dominated by the characteristic vibrations of α-hopeite, due to matrix crystallization. Setting of modified ZPC is strongly af…

Layer-by-layer deposited multilayer assemblies of polyelectrolytes and proteins: from ultrathin films to protein arrays

2008

We have recently introduced a new method of creating ultrathin films of polyelectrolytes based on the electrostatic attraction between opposite charges. Multilayer assemblies are adsorbed in a layer-by-layer fashion from aqueous solutions of the polymers. The total film thickness can easily be adjusted by varying the ionic strength of the solution. Here, we report on the temperature stability and the water content of the multilayer assemblies. Furthermore, we have extended our concept to the incorporation of protein layers into films of synthetic polyelectrolytes. The well established system biotin/streptavidin was used to construct such multilayers, also by biospecific recognition. Adsorpt…

Solvothermal synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of homometallic Co(II) and Cu(II) chains with double di(4-pyridyl)sulfide as bridges

2012

Abstract Two new coordination polymers {[Co(μ-4,4′-dps)2(H2O)2](NO3)2·2(4,4′-dps)·4H2O}n (1) and {[Cu(μ-4,4′-dps)2(H2O)2](NO3)2·2H2O}n (2) [4,4′-dps = di(4-pyridyl)sulfide] have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions between the nitrate salts of cobalt(II) (1) and copper(II) (2) and the 4,4′-dps molecule. Compounds 1 and 2 have been characterized by elemental analysis, thermal analysis (TG/DTA), vibrational spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and variable-temperature magnetic measurements. Compounds 1 and 2 are cationic chain compounds of formula {[M(μ-4,4′-dps)2(H2O)2]n2n+ [M = Co(II) (1) and Cu(II) (2)] with double 4,4′-dps bridges, uncoordinated nitrate anions, an…
