<title>Micro-Raman scattering and infrared spectra of hemoglobin</title>

2008

Confocal micro-Raman and FT-IR spectroscopies have been used for detection of radiation influence of hemoglobin of patients examined by radio-isotopes diagnosis (Tc99m). After irradiation we observed some little changes of the Raman scattering bands which connected with out of plane porphyrine bending vibrations, also we observed additional band due to methemoglobin. Radiation of blood lead to the transition from hemoglobin (Fe2+) to methemoglobin (Fe3+) with a delocalization of iron from porphyrine plane. It was shown that FT-IR spectra indicate the radiation effects on hemoglobin.© (2008) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Downloading of the abstract is per…

Sequential dissociation of insulin amyloids probed by high pressure Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy

2012

High Pressure (HP) Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) has been here employed to investigate the thermodynamic stability of bovine pancreatic insulin (BPI) amyloids. Once the aggregation reaction has started, the backbone arrangement of the proteins forming the amyloid is known to reach a stationary phase in few hours; after this time the infrared absorption of fibrils becomes stable. It is here shown how the further stabilization of the structure during the stationary phase can be probed via FTIR spectroscopy, through the observation of the high pressure behaviour of fibrils formed at different maturation stages. We report on the high pressure fragmentation of insulin amyloids, …

FTIR analysis of the high pressure response of native insulin assemblies

2013

It is widely recognized that a central role in conferring stability to the structure of proteins against misfolding and aggregation is played by the formation of oligomers. The case of insulin is prototypical in this respect: in our body it is stored up in stable inactive hexameric assemblies whereas only in its monomeric form it recovers the role of regulating carbohydrate and fat metabolism. In the present paper, exploiting the optimal coupling between FTIR spectroscopy and diamond anvil cell technique, we probe the stability of different insulin oligomeric forms under high pressure, namely over the ranges 0-15 kbar for water solution and 0-80 kbar for dry powder. Results obtained show di…

<title>Compact multi-functional skin spectrometry set-up</title>

2006

A portable fibre-optic spectrometry set-up has been assembled and tested for applications in skin diffuse reflectance spectrometry, laser fluorescence spectrometry and multi-wavelength reflection photoplethysmography (multi-PPG) studies. The spectrometry set was tested by diffuse reflectance and fluorescence measurements for diagnostics of skin vascular malformations and pigmented diseases such as nevi and melanoma . In addition, studies of microcirculation in blood vessels located at different depths from the skin surface were performed by the multi-PPG method. The results of skin diffuse reflectance and autofluorescence showed differences in spectra of healthy and pathologic skin. The par…

YSOs in DROXO (Deep rho Oph XMM obs.)

2011

X-rays from very young stars are powerful probes to investigate the mechanisms at work in the very first stages of the star formation and the origin of X-ray emission in very young stars. We present results from a 500ks long observation of the rho Ophiuchi cloud with a XMM-Newton large program named DROXO, aiming at studying the X-ray emission of deeply embedded young stellar objects (YSOs). Cone search capability for table J/A+A/519/A34/tablea1 (List of sources detected in the DROXO EPIC images) Cone search capability for table J/A+A/519/A34/tablea3 (ISOCAM YSOs (Bontemps et al. 2001, J/A+A/372/173) undetected in the DROXO field of view)

Brown Dwarfs in ChaI Dark Cloud

2004

We present the results of a multiband survey for brown dwarfs in the Chamaeleon I dark cloud with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) camera at the ESO/MPG 2.2-m telescope on La Silla (Chile) on 28-May to 03-Jun 1999. The survey has revealed a substantial population of brown dwarfs in this southern star-forming region. Candidates were selected from R, I and H{alpha} imaging observations. We also observed in two medium-band filters, M855 and M915, for spectral type determination. The former filter covers a wavelength range containing spectral features characteristic of M-dwarfs, while the latter lies in a relatively featureless wavelength region for these late-type objects. A correlation was found b…

VCNS II. The IR-excess-selected population

2015

We performed a deep wide-field (6.76 square-degrees) near-infrared survey with the VISTA telescope that covers the entire extent of the Carina nebula complex. Complementing the VISTA near-infrared catalog with Spitzer IRAC mid-infrared photometry improves the situation of the background contamination considerably. We find that a (J-H) versus (Ks-[4.5]) color-color diagram is well suited to tracing the population of YSO-candidates (cYSOs) by their infrared excess. We identify 8781 sources with strong infrared excess, which we consider as cYSOs. This sample is used to investigate the spatial distribution of the cYSOs with a nearest-neighbor analysis. The surface density distribution of cYSOs …

Variability in proto-PNe. II.

2014

We have carried out a detailed observational study of the light, color, and velocity variations of two bright, carbon-rich proto-planetary nebulae, IRAS 22223+4327 and 22272+5435. The light curves are based upon our observations from 1994 to 2011, together with published data by Arkhipova and collaborators. They each display four significant periods, with primary periods for IRAS 22223+4327 and 22272+5435 being 90 and 132 days, respectively. For each of them, the ratio of secondary to primary period is 0.95, a value much different from that found in Cepheids, but which may be characteristic of post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Fewer significant periods are found in the smaller radia…

Dynamics of Metal Centers Monitored by Nuclear Inelastic Scattering

2005

Nuclear inelastic scattering of synchrotron radiation has been used now since 10 years as a tool for vibrational spectroscopy. This method has turned out especially useful in case of large molecules that contain a M\"ossbauer active metal center. Recent applications to iron-sulfur proteins, to iron(II) spin crossover complexes and to tin-DNA complexes are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the combination of nuclear inelastic scattering and density functional calculations.

Collimation of energy in medium-modified QCD jets

2012

The collimation of energy inside medium-modified jets is investigated in the leading logarithmic approximation of QCD. The Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) evolution equations are slightly modified by introducing splitting functions enhanced in the infrared sector. As compared to elementary collisions in the vacuum, the angular distribution of the jet energy is found to broaden in QCD media.
