Comparison of conventional hamstring/quadriceps ratio between genders in level-matched soccer players

2017

Abstract Objectives The main goal of our study is to compare the hamstring/quadriceps ( H / Q ) ratio at different knee angles between level-matched male and female soccer players and to determine whether differences in the H / Q ratio exist between the dominant and the non-dominant leg. Methods A cross-sectional study design was used to compare an isometric H / Q ratio and functional isokinetic ratio (between hamstring in eccentric contraction and quadriceps in concentric contraction) between males ( n  = 14) and females ( n  = 14). These ratios were studied at two different speeds of movement (60° s −1 and 180° s −1 ) and in five different positions (40°, 50°, 60°, 70° and 80° degrees of …

The association of bike fitting with injury, comfort, and pain during cycling: An international retrospective survey

2018

Although bike fitting is recommended to help reduce injury risk, little empirical evidence exists to indicate an association between bike fitting and injury incidence. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of bike fitting on self-reported injury, comfort, and pain while cycling from a worldwide survey of cyclists. A total of 849 cyclists completed an online questionnaire between February and October 2016. Questionnaire collected data on respondent demographics, cycling profile, bike fitting, comfort and pain while cycling, and injury history. The main predictor variable was bike fitting (yes, by the respondent, i.e. user bike fitting; yes, by a professional service; or no). Covar…

477 Injury risk in finnish youth floorball: a one-year prospective follow-up study

2016

Background Floorball is a popular team sport in Finland. Previous studies have revealed that injuries are a significant problem in adult floorball. However, epidemiological studies of injuries in youth floorball are lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence, type, and severity of injuries in young floorball players. Methods One-hundred-fifty-six female (n = 57) and male players (n = 99) (mean age 17.1 ± 1.6 years) from nine floorball teams participated in the study. Injury data as well as practice and game exposures were collected over the 12-months period (from May 2013 to April 2014). An injury was defined as having occurred in an organised floorball practice or game…

Methods to determine saddle height in cycling and implications of changes in saddle height in performance and injury risk: A systematic review

2021

The objective of this systematic review was to assess the methods to determine bicycle saddle height and the effects of saddle height on cycling performance and injury risk outcomes. The key motivator of this review was to update and expand the finding reported by a previous narrative review published in 2011. The literature search included all documents from the following databases: Medline, Scopus, CINAHL, OVID and Google Scholar. Studies were screened against the Appraisal tool for Cross-sectional Studies to assess methodological quality and risk of bias. After screening the initial 29,398 articles identified, full-text screening was performed on 66 studies with 41 of these included in t…

Foot Orthosis in Running

2019

Abstract Foot orthosis is a popular strategy for runners aiming to reduce the injury risk and improve performance in running. Companies of foot orthosis claim for a high number of benefits, however, the literature is controversy in many aspects and there are not systematic results because of the use of them. The aim of this chapter is, firstly, to introduce the reader about the concept of foot orthosis and its different definitions and types. Secondly, to show the most important scientific literature about its biomechanical and physiological effects during running. These biomechanical and physiological effects were divided into the following sections in order to be clear for the reader: kin…

Association between lower extremity muscular strength and acute knee injuries in young team‐sports athletes

2020

The purpose of this study was to investigate LE muscular strength variables as potential risk factors for all and non‐contact acute knee and ACL injuries in young athletes. A total of 188 young (≤21) male and 174 female basketball and floorball players participated in LE muscular strength tests and were followed up to three years. The strength test battery consisted of 1RM leg press, maximal concentric isokinetic (60°/s) quadriceps and hamstrings and maximal isometric hip abductor strength. The outcomes were a new acute knee or ACL injury and a new acute non‐contact knee or ACL injury. A total of 51 (17 in males and 34 in females) new acute knee injuries registered and 17 (one in males and …

Injury History and Perceived Knee Function as Risk Factors for Knee Injury in Youth Team-Sports Athletes

2022

Background: The identification of risk factors for sports injuries is essential before injury prevention strategies can be planned. Hypothesis: Previous acute knee injury and lower perceived knee function measured by Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) will increase the risk of acute knee injury in youth team-sports athletes. Study Design: Prospective cohort study. Level of Evidence: Level 3. Methods: At baseline, youth (≤21 years old) male and female basketball and floorball athletes completed a questionnaire on previous acute knee injuries and perceived knee function (KOOS). A total of 211 male and 183 female athletes were followed for an acute knee injury up to 3 years. U…

Evaluación y caracterización biomecánica de los trinquetes de pelota valenciana. (Biomechanical assessment and characterization of the Valencian ball…

2012
