Knowledge Representation on the Web Revisited : The Case for Prototypes
2016
Recently, RDF and OWL have become the most common knowledge representation languages in use on the Web, propelled by the recommendation of the W3C. In this paper we examine an alternative way to represent knowledge based on Prototypes. This Prototype-based representation has different properties, which we argue to be more suitable for data sharing and reuse on the Web. Prototypes avoid the distinction between classes and instances and provide a means for object-based data sharing and reuse. In this paper we discuss the requirements and design principles for Knowledge Representation based on Prototypes on the Web, after which we propose a formal syntax and semantics. We further show how to e…

Intégrer des informations en escamots dans les textes techniques : quels effets sur les processus cognitifs ?
1998
Though computerized sytems now offer a wide range of options for accessing and displaying text or text-picture information, little is known about their effects on the user's cognitive processes. In this paper, we investigate the effect of a computer-specific display (pop-up window) which consists in displaying some pieces of information in windows that appear only under user's action. Experiments were carried out to compare the pop-up window device with other devices used on paper. The experiments dealt with text only as well as text-picture documents and involved various tasks. Results are discussed from a theoretical and a practical point of view.

La baia dei sogni: poesia e memoria pubblica in Migrante di Wole Soyinka
2019
On March 10, 2015, the mayor of Catania, Enzo Bianco, inaugurated a monumental mausoleum in the city's cemetery to commemorate 17 people who had lost their lives to the Mediterranean the year before. Their corpses were found in the waters around Lampedusa, whose small cemetery, in former mayor Giusi Nicolini's words, could not spatially 'welcome' any more bodies to bury. Not only did Bianco offer them a burial place in his city but he also had engraved on each of the 17 graves a verse of Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka's recent poem Migrants, a powerful reflection on exile and migration as an act of resistance, written for the poetry anthology Migrazioni/Migrations. Bianco also commissioned a s…
Japanese in-service teachers' attitudes towards inclusive education and self-efficacy for inclusive practices
2015
Although inclusive education has become mainstream in global educational policy, its implementation in national educational policies and in actual practice is often prob-lematic. In Japan, for example, inclusion is relatively new concept for teachers and the overall support system for children with disabilities is underdeveloped. Previous stud-ies suggested that teachers needed to adopt positive attitudes towards inclusive educa-tion and to have high self-efficacy for inclusive practices if they want to become ef-fective inclusion teachers. The purpose of this study is to examine Japanese teachers’ attitudes towards the implementation of inclusive education and self-efficacy for in-clusive …

Adapting Formal Logic for Everyday Mathematics
2022
Although logic is considered central to mathematics and computer science, there is evidence that teaching logic has not been a great success. We identify three issues where what is typically taught conflicts with what is needed by those who are supposed to apply logic. First, what is taught about the notion of implication often disagrees with human intuition. We argue that in some cases human intuition is wrong, and in some others teaching is to blame. Second, the formal concepts of logical consequence, logical equivalence and tautology are not the similar concepts that everyday mathematicians and computer scientists need. The difference is small enough to go unnoticed but big enough to cau…
Automated Checking of Flexible Mathematical Reasoning in the Case of Systems of (In)Equations and the Absolute Value Operator
2021
We present an approach and a tool for automatically providing feedback on solutions that involve complicated reasoning patterns. Currently the tool supports linear systems of equations and inequations that may also contain the absolute value operator and a restricted form of rational functions. This suffices for designing problems that are laborious to solve with standard mechanical procedures, but much easier using short-cuts that students may find by creative thinking. Earlier research has found that struggling with important mathematics promotes conceptual development. Our goal is to encourage students to such struggling. A crucial feature is to give them great freedom to choose the path…
