The genus thiobacillus: Physiology and industrial applications

This review deals with different aspects concerning the genus Thiobacillus as an obligat chemoautotroph able to oxidize reduced anorganic sulphur compounds. There are given the following topics: physiology of the genus (nutritional requirements, enzymatic complexes for sulphur oxidation, energy generation, reductive CO2 assimilation and growing in presence of organic compounds). The ecological significance of Thiobacilli in the sulphur cycle in Nature is presented. The impact of a disused mine on uranium transport in the River Fal, South West England.

Unfiltered and filtered (0.45 and 0.2 microm) water samples and sediment samples (sieved to180 microm and 180-1000 microm) were collected along an approximately 15 km transect of the River Fal, Cornwall, UK, to examine the impact of the disused South Terras uranium mine on the uranium concentrations of the river water and underlying sediments. The uranium concentration of the water samples fluctuated along the river, with the 0.45 microm filtered water showing the largest, seven-fold, difference between minimum (0.19 microg L(-1)) and maximum (1.34 microg L(-1)) concentrations. Sense of coherence and health among home-dwelling older people.

Sense of coherence (SOC) is important for maintaining health. The aim of this study was to investigate if the SOC experience among home-dwelling physically active older people differs from that of hospital patients with the same age and sex. Data were collected with questionnaires and structured interviews containing Antonovsky’s SOC scale in an age- and sex-matched study group (n=160). Non-parametric statistical analyses were performed. No differences were found in SOC between home-dwelling individuals and patients. “Release and catch” catalytic systems

In this perspective article the “release and catch” catalytic system concept is discussed. A “release and catch” catalytic system is prepared by non-covalent immobilization of the catalytic moiety on a suitable support, but differently from the usual non-covalently supported catalyst, the catalytic moiety is released in solution over the course of the reaction and it is recaptured at the end of the reaction. Such a “catalyst- sponge like” or “boomerang” system allows one to combine the benefits of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis and can be applied to organometallic-based catalysts, organocatalysts and metal-based catalysts.

Tetraiodoethynyl resorcinarene cavitands as multivalent halogen bond donors

The first examples of iodoethynyl resorcinarene cavitands as rigid 3D halogen bond (XB) donor molecules are presented. These concave macrocycles form strong, RXB = 0.78–0.83, halogen bonds with dioxane oxygen, pyridine nitrogen and a bromide anion in tetraproropyl ammonium bromide resulting in deep cavity cavitand structures.

Structure-activity relationship of dopaminergic halogenated 1-benzyl-tetrahydroisoquinoline derivatives

Two series of halogenated 1-benzyl-7-chloro-6-hydroxy-tetrahydroisoquinolines were prepared to explore the influence of each series on the affinity for dopamine receptors. All the compounds displayed a high affinity for D(1)-like and/or D(2)-like dopamine receptors in striatal membranes, although they were unable to inhibit [(3)H]-dopamine uptake in striatal synaptosomes. Bioavailability of inorganic arsenic in cooked rice: practical aspects for human health risk assessments.

Arsenic is present in rice grain mainly as inorganic arsenic. Little is known about the effect of cooking on inorganic arsenic content in rice and its bioavailability. This study evaluated total arsenic and inorganic arsenic in rice cooked with arsenic-contaminated water, the bioaccessibility of As(III) and As(V) after simulated gastrointestinal digestion, and the extent of arsenic retention and transport by Caco-2 cells used as a model of intestinal epithelia. After cooking, inorganic arsenic contents increase significantly.
