Application of deep convolutional neural networks for the detection of anthracnose in olives using VIS/NIR hyperspectral images

2021

Anthracnose is one of the primary diseases that affect olive production before and after harvest, causing severe damage and economic losses. The objective of this work is to detect this disease in the early stages, using hyperspectral images and advanced modelling techniques of Deep Learning (DL) and convolutional neural networks (CNN). The olives were artificially inoculated with the fungus. Hyperspectral images (450–1050 nm) of each olive were acquired until visual symptoms of the disease were observed, in some cases up to 9 days. The olives were classified into two classes: control, inoculated with water, and fungi composed of olives inoculated with the fungus. The ResNet101 architecture…

Convenio sobre el trabajo marítimo 2006 (MLC, 2006)

2019

The essay analyses 2006 Convention on maritime work, and it highlights its original characteristics within ILO sources: firstly, the Convention systemises the fragmented scenario of conventions and recommendations on maritime workers’ rights. Secondly, it is characterised by a strong effectiveness, especially having regard to repatriation and to Flag State and Port State controls, not limited to ships flying a flag of a ratifying State. In any case, some weaknesses persist, such as the lack of recognition of the right to strike and a very generic regulation of shore leave. El ensayo analiza el Convenio sobre trabajo marítimo de 2006, y pone de manifiesto su originalidad dentro del marco de …

External investigations and disciplinary sanctions against auditors: the impact on audit quality

2015

In this paper, we provide empirical evidence for the impact of disciplinary sanctions imposed on Spanish auditing firms and their engagement partners. The disciplinary sanctions resulted from external investigations, which revealed misapplications of auditing standards. In particular, we evaluate (a) the efficacy of the external supervisory board in identifying low-quality auditors and (b) the effectiveness of the disciplinary system in improving the quality of subsequent statutory audits performed by the sanctioned auditors. We employ two earnings management indicators as proxies for audit quality: loss avoidance through extraordinary items and abnormal accruals. And we compare these measu…

Dynamics of a flexible magnetic chain in a rotating magnetic field.

2004

The model of an elastic magnetic rod is applied for a study of a behavior of the flexible magnetic particle chain in a rotating magnetic field. By numerical simulation it is shown that behavior of a flexible magnetic chain is characterized by the existence of a critical frequency beyond which the dynamics of the rod is periodic with subsequent stages of bending and straightening. The value of the critical frequency found is explained by a simple model. Below the critical frequency the chain is bent and rotates synchronously with a field. It is illustrated that in particular cases the considered model reproduces phenomena observed experimentally and numerically for the magnetic particle chai…

Dynamics of an active magnetic particle in a rotating magnetic field.

2006

The motion of an active (self-propelling) particle with a permanent magnetic moment under the action of a rotating magnetic field is considered. We show that below a critical frequency of the external field the trajectory of a particle is a circle. For frequencies slightly above the critical point the particle moves on an approximately circular trajectory and from time to time jumps to another region of space. Symmetry of the particle trajectory depends on the commensurability of the field period and the period of the orientational motion of the particle. We also show how our results can be used to study the properties of naturally occurring active magnetic particles, so-called magnetotacti…

Usability of Programming Languages

2016

Programming languages form the interface between programmers (the users) and the computation that they desire the computer to execute. Although studies exist for some aspects of programming language design (such as conditionals), other aspects have received little or no human factors evaluations. Designers thus have little they can rely on if they want to make new languages highly usable, and users cannot easily chose a language based on usability criteria. This SIG will bring together researchers and practitioners interested in increasing the depth and breadth of studies on the usability of programming languages, and ultimately in improving the usability of future languages. nonPeerReviewed

Usability challenges in digital learning solutions

2015

Usability is a key element in successful software. Ensuring the technical usability of a learning solution enables users to focus on their main task, learning. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the results of heuristic usability evaluations of digital learning solutions. Heuristic evaluations were conducted on 24 digital learning solutions from one country (Finland) and two country groups (Asian countries and Spanish speaking countries) concentrating on the usability of the user interface of each evaluated solution. The main results of this study indicate that a few heuristics cover the majority of all usability problems (UPs) observed in learning solutions, but these heuristics c…

An empirical approach for evaluating the usability of model-driven tools

2013

MDD tools are very useful to draw conceptual models and to automate code generation. Even though this would bring many benefits, wide adoption of MDD tools is not yet a reality. Various research activities are being undertaken to find why and to provide the required solutions. However, insufficient research has been done on a key factor for the acceptance of MDD tools: usability. With the help of end-users, this paper presents a framework to evaluate the usability of MDD tools. The framework will be used as a basis for a family of experiments to get clear insights into the barriers to usability that prevent MDD tools from being widely adopted in industry. To illustrate the applicability of …
