Gravitational Waves from the Papaloizou-Pringle Instability in Black-Hole-Torus Systems
2011
Black hole (BH)--torus systems are promising candidates for the central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), and also possible outcomes of the collapse of supermassive stars to supermassive black holes (SMBHs). By three-dimensional general relativistic numerical simulations, we show that an $m=1$ nonaxisymmetric instability grows for a wide range of self-gravitating tori orbiting BHs. The resulting nonaxisymmetric structure persists for a timescale much longer than the dynamical one, becoming a strong emitter of large amplitude, quasiperiodic gravitational waves. Our results indicate that both, the central engine of GRBs and newly formed SMBHs, can be strong gravitational wave sources observa…
Instability of twisted magnetar magnetospheres
2019
We present three-dimensional force-free electrodynamics simulations of magnetar magnetospheres that demonstrate the instability of certain degenerate, high energy equilibrium solutions of the Grad-Shafranov equation. This result indicates the existence of an unstable branch of twisted magnetospheric solutions and allows to formulate an instability criterion. The rearrangement of magnetic field lines as a consequence of this instability triggers the dissipation of up to 30% of the magnetospheric energy on a thin layer above the magnetar surface. During this process, we predict an increase of the mechanical stresses onto the stellar crust, which can potentially result in a global mechanical f…
Nonlinear dynamics of spinning bosonic stars: formation and stability
2019
We perform numerical evolutions of the fully non-linear Einstein-(complex, massive)Klein-Gordon and Einstein-(complex)Proca systems, to assess the formation and stability of spinning bosonic stars. In the scalar/vector case these are known as boson/Proca stars. Firstly, we consider the formation scenario. Starting with constraint-obeying initial data, describing a dilute, axisymmetric cloud of spinning scalar/Proca field, gravitational collapse towards a spinning star occurs, via gravitational cooling. In the scalar case the formation is transient, even for a non-perturbed initial cloud; a non-axisymmetric instability always develops ejecting all the angular momentum from the scalar star. I…
Stability analysis of black holes in massive gravity: a unified treatment
2014
We consider the analytic solutions of massive (bi)gravity which can be written in a simple form using advanced Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates. We analyse the stability of these solutions against radial perturbations. First we recover the previously obtained result on the instability of the bidiagonal bi-Schwarzschild solutions. In the non-bidiagonal case (which contains, in particular, the Schwarzschild solution with Minkowski fiducial metric) we show that generically there are physical spherically symmetric perturbations, but no unstable modes.
On AdS7 stability
2019
AdS$_7$ supersymmetric solutions in type IIA have been classified, and they are infinitely many. Moreover, every such solution has a non-supersymmetric sister. In this paper, we study the perturbative and non-perturbative stability of these non-supersymmetric solutions, focusing on cases without orientifolds. Perturbatively, we first look at the KK spectrum of spin-2 excitations. This does not exhibit instabilities, but it does show that there is no separation of scales for either the BPS and the non-BPS case, thus proving for supersymmetric AdS$_7$ a well-known recent conjecture. We then use 7d gauged supergravity and a brane polarization computation to access part of the spectrum of KK sc…
Instability of black holes in massive gravity
2013
We show that linear perturbations around the simplest black hole solution of massive bi-gravity theories, the bi-Schwarzschild solution, exhibit an unstable mode featuring the Gregory-Laflamme instability of higher dimensional black strings. The result is obtained for the massive gravity theory which is free from the Boulware-Deser ghost, as well as for its extension with two dynamical metrics. These results may indicate that static black holes in massive gravity do not exist. For the graviton mass of the order of the Hubble scale, however, the instability timescale is of order of the Hubble time.
Pseudospectrum and Black Hole Quasinormal Mode Instability
2020
We study the stability of quasinormal modes (QNM) in asymptotically flat black hole spacetimes by means of a pseudospectrum analysis. The construction of the Schwarzschild QNM pseudospectrum reveals the following: (i) the stability of the slowest-decaying QNM under perturbations respecting the asymptotic structure, reassessing the instability of the fundamental QNM discussed by Nollert [H. P. Nollert, About the Significance of Quasinormal Modes of Black Holes, Phys. Rev. D 53, 4397 (1996)] as an "infrared" effect; (ii) the instability of all overtones under small-scale ("ultraviolet") perturbations of sufficiently high frequency, which migrate towards universal QNM branches along pseudospec…
Modeling the hydrological and mechanical effect of roots on shallow landslides
2016
This study proposes a new methodology for estimating the additional shear strength (or cohesion) exerted by vegetation roots on slope stability analysis within a coupled hydrological-stability model. The mechanical root cohesion is estimated within a Fiber Bundle Model framework that allows for the evaluation of the root strength as a function of stress-strain relationships of populations of fibers. The use of such model requires the knowledge of the root architecture. A branching topology model based on Leonardo's rule is developed, providing an estimation of the amount of roots and the distribution of diameters with depth. The proposed methodology has been implemented into an existing dis…
Optimization of vehicle-trailer connection systems
2016
The three main requirements of a vehicle-trailer connection system are: en route stability, over- or under-steering restraint, minimum off-tracking along curved path. Linking the two units by four-bar trapeziums, wider stability margins may be attained in comparison with the conventional pintle-hitch for both instability types, divergent or oscillating. The stability maps are traced applying the Hurwitz method or the direct analysis of the characteristic equation at the instability threshold. Several types of four-bar linkages may be quickly tested, with the drawbars converging towards the trailer or the towing unit. The latter configuration appears preferable in terms of self-stability and…
Basics of doubly heavy tetraquarks
2018
We outline the most important results regarding the stability of doubly heavy tetraquarks $QQ\bar q\bar q$ with an adequate treatment of the four-body dynamics. We consider both color-mixing and spin-dependent effects. Our results are straightforwardly applied to the case of all-heavy tetraquarks $QQ\bar Q\bar Q$. We conclude that the stability is favored in the limit $M_Q/m_q \gg 1$ pointing to the stability of the $bb\bar u\bar d$ state and the instability of all-heavy tetraquarks.
