Regional Security Cooperation and the SADC’s Organ for Politics, Defence and Security: A Picture of Mixed Performance

2017

This chapter provides a profound analysis of regional security cooperation in the SADC and focusses on the institutionalisation and performance of the organisation’s central conflict management institution, the Organ for Politics, Defence and Security (OPDS). By clarifying the regional security complex in every detail, Muntschick highlights the countries’ common demand for institutionalised regional security cooperation and reflects on the conflicting interstate interests on the institutional design of the SADC’s central security organ. External actors play no significant role, but a lack of compromise between the leading military powers, South Africa and Zimbabwe, is initially responsible …

Occupations of Housing and Social Centers in Rome: A Durable Resistance to Neoliberalism and Institutionalization

2017

Squatting for housing and social centers has a long tradition in Rome since the end of the 1960s. By the mid-1970s, the occupation of buildings to set up political and social activities became part of the repertoire of left radical movements. In this chapter a set of 34 squatted spaces for housing and social centers in Rome active in 2014 is analysed. Squatting practices thus provide a lens to interpret the evolution of urban struggles, urban development and the changing sociopolitical contexts. Furthermore, Mudu and Rossini examine the role played by the processes of neutralization, co-optation, normalization and contention that explain the institutionalization of squatting in the city of …

Intellectuals and the end of revolution: the functionalist view

2013

This article's main aim is to present a basic picture of the central functionalist theories on intellectuals developed in the United States during the sixties and seventies. Today, it seems that the main debates arising during that period were placed in Europe (Sartre, Aron, Foucault) and they tended to be linked to Marxism. However, American theorists focused on the specialization and institutionalization of the intellectual and, in this sense, presented a model of this social actor resemblant, in some cases, with the present figures of the intellectual.

Managerial understanding and attitudes towards beyond budgeting in Ukraine

2019

In order to find out how Ukrainian practitioners understand and evaluate management control innovation - beyond budgeting - this study examines their attitudes towards this concept and meanings they attach to it in the process of learning and sensemaking. Results show how the content and meaning of novel management innovation is reinterpreted and negotiated in new institutional context. Empirical evidences support the central statement of institutional theory, namely a replacement of practice's former technical functions by institutional facts, specific symbolic meanings and collective understandings. The findings reported serve to demonstrate the gradual replacement of brute facts and empi…

2022

The only classical jurisprudential text to have come down to us, in its entirety, without the mediation and filter of the Justinian Digest, Gaius's commentaries from the famous Codex Veronensis no. 13 - commonly referred to as institutiones, but perhaps not by their author - present such characters and writing techniques as to be recognised as an isagogical text that the jurist-teacher must have composed (around the middle of the 2nd century AD, reigning Antoninus Pius) as a teaching aid intended to circulate exclusively among the circle of his students. The peculiarities of the compositional strategy suggest an original and direct Gaian authorship, freeing the work from a consolidated cons…

Institutions and Deontic Powers: Some Comments on the Tuomela-Searle Debate

In this talk I will analyze Tuomela’s theory of institutions and the most recent debate with Searle over the issue of whether institutions conceptually involve the creation and distribution of deontic powers. By way of analyzing Tuomela and Searle’s reciprocal criticisms, I conclude that Tuomela does not give us sufficient reasons to give up Searle’s thesis that institutions always involve deontic powers, but I also argue that it is necessary to go beyond Searle’s recent speech act-centered explanation of human sociality. More specifically, moving along the lines of Di Lorenzo’s view of constitutive rules as built into the logical and pragmatic structure of human activities, and making use …
