For a “Living (Lab)” Approach to Smart Cities

2016

Thanks to the diffusion of information and communication technologies, and despite the huge margins of improvement of the operating conditions of the Web, sharing an idea can be today the starting point for the birth of either a start-up or a community of interests, able to achieve a variety of goals without the intervention of any public institution. In relation to such a ferment of successful micro-level initiatives, Territorial Living Labs are here interpreted as place-based ecosystems of co-creation of goods, services as well as new organizational and social models of smart urban life. From this interpretation, the necessity strongly emerges of a coherent and viable reference framework …

The negotiation of rules and state intervention in irrigation management: The Júcar Canal in the mid-19th century

2012

The way the rules for distributing water work in irrigation communities has been the object of numerous studies. Yet, little is known about how the negotiation process that is required to design such rules has developed historically, which is what this article focuses on. Specifically, the case of the Júcar Canal, which was built in the 13th century and went on to become the largest irrigation system in Spain after undergoing an extension in the early 19th century. As a result of said extension, there were many clashes between the old and the new irrigators, the climate of cooperation between users diminished and it became necessary to draw up a new set of regulations. Two crucial factors a…

Istituzioni ecclesiastiche e potere regio nel mediterraneo medievale. Scritti per Salvatore Fodale

2016

It is evident that our technological society is undoubtedly linked to the diffusion of images. Authors such as Gottfried Boehm John Mitchell Hans Belting investigated the nature of the image by laying the foundations in the 1990s for the idea of a pictorial turn of a culture totally dominated by images that has now become a real technical possibility on global scale. A new statute of the image that is used to collect under the label of iconic turner inserted in the wider field of visual culture studies. The use of the term culture alongside that of visual is indicative of the breadth of the field of investigation that visual culture studies aim to seek: they do not want to limit themselves to ascertaining the predominance of the visual in contemporary society and an evaluation of its aesthetic component. but they want to proceed towards an anthropological research in which visual culture is analyzed as a particular lifestyle that expresses certain meanings and values not only in art and high culture but also in institutions and daily behavior. We will try to apply this new paradigm to photographs: instead of asking ourselves what the images mean let's try to ask ourselves what they want.

2013

Knowledge spillovers within urban economies are also sources of spillovers between cities. We examine how knowledge spillovers influenced the economic growth of 82 European metropolises over the 1990-2005 period. We model knowledge spillovers between cities on the basis of five specific interaction patterns based on geography, networks of multinational firms in advanced services, institutional climate and two combinations of these factors. Spatial models are estimated to detail the effects of growth factors in terms of spillovers and externalities. We show that spillovers are local rather than global and that interactions among cities accelerate the convergence process based on gross value …

Higher Education Institutions Quality and Graduate Wages in Tunisia

2017

International audience; We estimate the effect of university characteristics on the return to higher education in Tunisia. We use a variety of administrative data from the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the Ministry of Vocational Training and Employment and the National Social Security Fund. We consider econometric approaches based on multilevel modeling, which distinguishes more precisely between the effects of individual factors and institutional factors on earnings. Our findings confirm the relationship between the income and some university characteristics such as the number of permanent teachers, the selectivity of the higher learning institutions at the academic orientatio…

Improving Teachers' Professionalism on an Experimental Basis

2013

International audience; While education economists have paid considerable attention to the performance of the education sectors, they have placed little emphasis on the management of the pedagogical process. In the context of developing countries, there are clear signs of weak management and too many school personnel neglect tasks deemed essential for student learning. Using data from a large - scale experiment conducted recently in Madagascar, thearticle analyzes the variations in impact of a set of management interventions designed to improve the engagement at work of public primary school teachers. While school - level interventions raise the teachers' level of professionalism on average…
