Possibilities for Underground Physics in the Pyh\"asalmi mine

2018

The Pyh\"asalmi mine is uniquely suited to host new generation of large-scale underground experiments. It was chosen both by the LAGUNA-LBNO and by the LENA Collaboration as the preferred site for a giant neutrino observatory. Regrettably, none of these projects got funded. The termination of the underground excavations in the fall of 2019 marks an important milestone. To maintain the infrastructure in good condition a new sponsor must be found: either a large-scale scientific project or new commercial operation. The considered alternatives for the commercial used of the mine include a pumped-storage hydroelectricity plant and a high-security underground data-storage centre. Without a new s…

Automated detection of protein unfolding events in atomic force microscopy force curves

2016

Atomic force microscopy is not only a high-resolution imaging device but also a mechanical machine, which can be used either to indent or stretch (soft) biomaterials. Due to the statistical nature of such materials (i.e., hydrogels or polymers) hundreds of force-distance curves are required to describe their mechanical properties. In this manuscript, we present an automated system for polymer unfolding detection based on continuous wavelet analysis. We have tested the automated program on elastin, which is an important protein that provides elasticity to tissues and organs. Our results show that elastin changes its mechanical behavior in the presence of electrolytes. In particular, we show …

Apodization of imaging systems by means of a random spatially nonstationary absorbing screen

1992

The amplitude impulse response (AIR) of coherent imaging systems with random binary apodizers is analyzed. Formulas for the mean value and the variance of the AIR are derived for two statistical one-dimensional models of apodizers: (1) nonuniform low-density shot noise and (2) a nonuniform unipolar synchronous random process. We show that for both models a high signal-to-noise ratio is achieved within the central peak and the low-order sidelobes of the AIR. Apodizers based on the second model permit higher values of the signal-to-noise ratio than those based on the first one.

Characterisation of a symmetric AGATA detector using the imaging scanning technique

2013

Abstract The imaging scanning technique for the characterisation of large volume, highly segmented, HPGe detectors is demonstrated by comparing the measured spatial response of a symmetric AGATA crystal versus the theoretical calculations obtained with the Multi-Geometry Simulation (MGS) code. The signal rise-times measured as a function of the gamma-ray interaction positions, in both coaxial and planar regions of the detection volume, are presented and confronted with the expected behaviour obtained via MGS. The transition in charge carrier transport behaviour as a function of the depth is studied for the region of the complex electric field. In general, a fairly good agreement between the…

Effect of laser radiation upon heat and mass transfer in two-component elastic semitransparent layer

2004

Abstract In present paper the effect of the correlation between spectral radiative characteristics of different lasers and absorptive characteristics of laser irradiated two-component elastic semitransparent material upon coupled thermal, diffusive and elastic processes in the layer is examined. Irradiated material is supposed to consist of elastic matrix and gaseous admixture. Investigations are carried out within the model applied early to the study of mentioned coupled processes in the layer subjected to thermal infrared radiation. Calculations were carried out for four different infrared lasers. Peculiarities of heat and admixture mass transfer caused by laser irradiation are establishe…

Integrated analytical methodologies for the study of corrosion processes in archaeological bronzes

2011

Abstract The investigations on structure and micro-chemical composition of archaeological metal alloys are needed in archaeometry. The aim of this study is devoted both to acquire information about their provenance and production technology, and to improve our understanding about the corrosion processes. In this paper we present the study of the corrosion phenomena of bronze samples, laboratory-made according to binary, ternary and quaternary alloys typical of Roman archaeometallurgical production through an integrated methodology based on the use of non or micro invasive physical techniques. Among the analysed samples, two were artificially aged through burial in the archaeological site of…

Wireless ECG and cardiac monitoring systems: State of the art, available commercial devices and useful electronic components

2021

Abstract Wireless ElectroCardioGram (ECG) systems are employed in manifold application fields: tele-monitoring, sport applications, support to ageing people at home, fetal ECG, wearable devices and ambulatory monitoring. The presence of cables often hinders user’s free movements, alongside clinicians’ routine operations. Therefore, wireless ECG systems are desirable. This paper aims at reviewing the solutions described in the literature, besides commercially available devices and electronic components useful to setup laboratory prototypes. Several systems have been developed, different in terms of the adopted technology; when approaching the development of a wireless ECG system, some import…

Influence of microbiology on endodontic failure. Literature review

2019

Background: The main cause of endodontic failure is the persistence of microorganisms that cause an intraradicular or extratradicular infection and that become resistant to disinfection measures. The objective of this review is to identify the microbiota associated with endodontic failure, as well as the reasons why these microorganisms are capable of surviving basic disinfection measures. Material and Methods: Systematic search of scientific articles in the databases PubMed with the following keywords “Endodontic Infections”, “Endodontic Microbiology”, “Endodontic Failure”, “Enterococcus Faecalis”, “Endodontics Retreatment” was carried out. Case reports and articles with publication date p…

A new phase locked loop strategy for power quality instruments synchronisation

2006

Power quality instrumentation requires the accurate fundamental frequency estimation and the signal synchronization, even in presence of disturbances. In the paper the authors present an innovative synchronization technique, based on a single phase software PLL. To evaluate how the synchronization technique is adversely affected by the application of stationary and transient disturbing influences, appropriate testing conditions have been developed, taking into account the requirements of the in-force standards. In the paper the proposed technique is described and PLL performances in presence of stationary and transient disturbances are presented
