Thermal and optical switching of bistable iron compounds and possible applications

Abstract Iron(II) coordination compounds with ligand field strengths close to the mean spin pairing energy may undergo thermal spin transition in the solid as well as in the liquid state. The thermodynamically stable state is high spin (HS) 5T2 (under Oh symmetry) with (t2)4 e2 electron configuration above the critical transition temperature Tc, and low spin (LS) 1A1 with (t2)6 electron configuration below Tc. The spin transition curve γHS(T) (molar fraction of HS molecules as function of temperature) can be abrupt or gradual, with or without hysteresis, or even with a plateau near Tc. EU dissemination of the provisional ultra-low-temperature scale, PLTS-2000

Following the introduction of the provisional low-temperature scale from 0.9 mK to 1K, PLTS-2000, there is a need for primary and secondary thermometers and fixed points, which can disseminate the scale to users. This paper reports on the progress, within the EU collaborative project ‘ULT Dissemination’, in the development and evaluation of several devices with associated instrumentation. Principal among them are a current-sensing noise thermometer, a CMN thermometer adapted for industrial use, a Coulomb blockade thermometer, a second-sound thermometer, a 3He melting pressure thermometer for a direct realisation of the PLTS-2000. Measurement of the group velocity of light in sea water at the ANTARES site

The group velocity of light has been measured at eight different wavelengths between 385 nm and 532 nm in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of about 2.2 km with the ANTARES optical beacon systems. A parametrisation of the dependence of the refractive index on wavelength based on the salinity, pressure and temperature of the sea water at the ANTARES site is in good agreement with these measurements.

Adhesion of liposomes: a quartz crystal microbalance study

Three different systems are presented, exploring the adhesion of liposomes mediated by electrostatic and lipid–protein interactions as well as molecular recognition of ligand receptor pairs. Liposomes are frequently used to gain insight into the complicated processes involving adhesion and subsequent events such as fusion and fission mainly triggered by specific proteins. Weld pool surface temperature measurement from polarization state of thermal emission

This paper presents a passive polarimetry method using a division of aperture optical device in order to measure the temperature distribution at the weld pool surface. Thermal emission from a hot liquid metal was investigated at a near-infrared wavelength corresponding to a blind spectral window of a helium plasma generated during gas tungsten arc welding process. The refractive index of liquid metal and the surface radiance are deduced from the polarisation state of thermal emissions. Precise measurement of $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay of $^{100}$Mo with the CUPID-Mo detection technology

We report the measurement of the two-neutrino double-beta ($2\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru using lithium molybdate (\crystal) scintillating bolometers. The detectors were developed for the CUPID-Mo program and operated at the EDELWEISS-III low background facility in the Modane underground laboratory. From a total exposure of $42.235$ kg$\times$d, the half-life of $^{100}$Mo is determined to be $T_{1/2}^{2\nu}=[7.12^{+0.18}_{-0.14}\,\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm0.10\,\mathrm{(syst.)}]\times10^{18}$ years. Mixed complexes of alkaline earth uranyl cabonates: A laser-induced time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopic study

The interaction of the alkaline earth ions Mg2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ with the uranyl tricarbonate complex has been studied by time resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. In contrast to the non-luminescent uranyl tricarbonate complex the formed products show slight luminescence properties. These have been used to determine the stoichiometry and complex stabilities of the formed compounds. As the alkaline earth elements are located in an outer shell of the complex the influence of the type of the alkaline earth element on the stability constant is not very drastic.
