Nitric oxide (NO) is a short-living free molecule synthesized by three different isoforms of nitric oxide synthases (NOS)—neuronal NOS, endothelial NOS, and inducible NOS—associated with neuromuscular transmission, muscle contractility, mitochondrial respiration, and carbohydrate metabolism in skeletal muscle. Neuronal NOS is constitutively expressed at the muscle fiber sarcolemma linked to the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex and concentrated at the neuromuscular endplate. First results from an ultra-fast frame image acquisition diagnostic coupled to a 2.45 GHz microwave hydrogen discharge are presented. The plasma reactor has been modified to include a transparent doubled shielded quartz window allowing to viewing the full plasma volume. Pictures describing the breakdown process at 1μs exposure time have been obtained for integrated visible light signal, Balmer-alpha, Balmer-beta lines, and Fulcher-band. Several different plasma emission distributions are reported. The distribution depends on the magnetic field configuration, incident microwave power, and neutral gas pressure. peerReviewed
Anomalous d-like surface resonances on Mo(110) analyzed by time-of-flight momentum microscopy.

The electronic surface states on Mo(110) have been investigated using time-of-flight momentum microscopy with synchrotron radiation (hν=35 eV). This novel angle-resolved photoemission approach yields a simultaneous acquisition of the E-vs-k spectral function in the full surface Brillouin zone and several eV energy interval. (kx,ky,EB)-maps with 3.4 A(-1) diameter reveal a rich structure of d-like surface resonances in the spin-orbit induced partial band gap. Calculations using the one-step model in its density matrix formulation predict an anomalous state with Dirac-like signature and Rashba spin texture crossing the bandgap at Γ¯ and EB=1.2 eV. The LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaborations have announced the first detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars. The merger rate of binary neutron stars estimated from this event suggests that distant, unresolvable binary neutron stars create a significant astrophysical stochastic gravitational-wave background. The binary neutron star background will add to the background from binary black holes, increasing the amplitude of the total astrophysical background relative to previous expectations. Abstract We developed a simple self-chemical optical sensor for the monitoring and removal of ultra-trace levels of Hg(II) from aqueous media. The development of this sensor was based on the covalent attachment of amino-functionalized aluminum-based MOF particles with ninhydrin. The new sensor is densely coated with a chelating ligand to permit an ultra-fast, selective, pH-dependent visualization for removal of Hg(II) with detection limit (LOD∼0.494 μg L−1). A new passive sampler based on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) layflat tube filled with chrome shavings from tannery waste residues was evaluated to determine volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor and outdoor areas. VOCs were directly determined by head space-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS) without any pretreatment of the sampler and avoiding the use of solvents. Limit of detection values ranging from 20 to 75 ng sampler−1and good repeatability values were obtained for VOCs under study with relative standard deviation values from 2.8 to 9.6% except for carbon disulfide for which it was 22.5%. A method was developed for the simultaneous multi-element determination of As, Cd, Cr and Pb in aqua regia digests of soils and sediments using an electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometer with a transversely heated graphite atomizer and longitudinal Zeeman-effect background correction. A fast furnace program with no pyrolysis stage or chemical modifier was used, and the total duration of the time-temperature program of the graphite furnace was 45 s. Abstract A fast, sensitive and simple non-chromatographic analytical method was developed for the speciation analysis of toxic arsenic species in cereal samples, namely rice and wheat semolina. An ultrasound-assisted extraction of the toxic arsenic species was performed with 1 mol L− 1 H3PO4 and 0.1% (m/v) Triton XT-114. Abstract A simple electrochemical methodology for screening and authentication of green, black and red tea varieties is proposed. It is based on the record of the voltammetric response of microparticulate films of antioxidant compounds resulting from an ethanolic micro-extraction of commercial tea herbal preparations in contact with aqueous buffers. The obtained voltammetric responses led us to differentiate between diverse tea varieties upon application of bivariant and multivariant chemometric techniques, including discrimination of mixtures of teas with sensitivity estimated of 5.0 μA mg −1 with a detection limit of 0.01 mg of tea sample.
