Central obesity and hypertension. Relationship between fasting serum insulin, plasma renin activity, and diastolic blood pressure in young obese subj…

1994

This study was designed to evaluate the role of fasting serum insulin and plasma renin activity in obesity-induced hypertension. In view of this, plasma catecholamines, fasting serum insulin (IRI), urinary sodium excretion (NaU), plasma renin activity (PRA), and plasma aldosterone (PA) levels were assessed in young (age less than 40 years) normotensive (n = 27) and hypertensive (n = 14) subjects with central obesity and in lean normotensives (n = 20). Central obesity was evaluated by waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) according to the indication of the Italian Consensus Conference of Obesity. PRA, PA, IRI, and plasma norepinephrine levels were significantly (P < .05) higher in both obese groups than …

Relation of inflammatory chemokines to insulin resistance and hypoadiponectinemia in coronary artery disease patients

2009

Although many studies have shown that the metabolic syndrome (MS) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) both are associated with chronic inflammatory state and are risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD), it is still unclear which condition is a more important contributor to the increased production of inflammatory chemokines. The purpose of this study was to assess monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) levels and their association with insulin resistance and adiponectin concentrations in CAD patients, who were categorized as having T2DM, MS, or neither.CAD male patients were categorized into three groups: 24 non-obese patients with T2DM (D), 24 obese pati…

Association of chemokines IP-10/CXCL10 and I-TAC/CXCL11 with insulin resistance and enhance leukocyte endothelial arrest in obesity

2021

Abstract Background and aims Obesity is a key contributing factor to incidental type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. CXCR3 receptor and its ligands CXCL 10 and 11 are associated with atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The aim of our study was to analyse the role of the CXCR3 ligands on insulin resistance (IR) and endothelial dysfunction in human obesity. Methods and results We have studied 45 obese patients (mean age 44 ± 6 years, body mass index 45 ± 9 kg/m2) who were selected for Roux-Y-gastric bypass surgery and 21 non obese control subjects with similar age and gender distribution. We measured by ELISA the circulating levels of the CXCR3 ligands interferon-γ inducible pr…

A cross-sectional survey among patients and prescribers on insulin dosing irregularities and impact of mild (self-treated) hypoglycemia episodes in S…

2014

In Spain, data suggest that 13.8% of adults have diabetes. Two important aspects in diabetes management are mild hypoglycemic episodes and poor treatment adherence. This study assesses the impact of missed insulin doses and prevalence of mistimed and reduced insulin doses and mild hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes treated with basal insulin analogues in Spain, and compares the data collected to pooled data from 8 other European countries (OECs).GAPP2 was an international, online, cross-sectional study of diabetic patients aged ≥40 years treated with long-acting insulin analogues and their healthcare professionals. Patients and healthcare professionals were recruited from online …

Involvement of insulin resistance in normoglycaemic obese patients with periodontitis: A cross-sectional study

2017

Aim We explored the association between obesity and periodontitis with the aim of determining the possible role of insulin resistance (IR) in this relationship. Materials and Methods A total of 212 subjects –110 obese and 102 lean individuals– were evaluated for periodontal disease and divided according to IR: a lean group without IR (LWIR); an obese group without IR (OWIR); and an obese group with IR (OIR). Anthropometric, metabolic, inflammatory and periodontal parameters were evaluated. Results Periodontitis was more prevalent in obese (80.9%) than in lean subjects (41.2%), with the former group showing a risk of periodontitis six-fold that of the latter. Obese subjects as a whole displa…

Visceral adiposity index is associated with insulin sensitivity and adipocytokine levels in newly diagnosed acromegalic patients.

2012

Context: The visceral adiposity index (VAI) has proved to be a marker of visceral adipose dysfunction, strongly associated with insulin sensitivity in both the general and specific populations of patients at metabolic risk. Objective: The objective of the study was to test VAI as a useful tool to assess early metabolic risk in acromegaly. Patients: Twenty-four newly diagnosed acromegalic patients (11 women and 13 men, aged 54.9 ± 13.6 yr) were grouped into those with normal (group A, n = 13, 54.2%) and those with high VAI (group B, n = 11, 45.8%). Outcome Measures: Glucose, hemoglobin A1c, nadir and area under the curve (AUC) of GH (AUCGH) during the oral glucose tolerance test, AUCCpeptide…

Prevalence of psychiatric disorders in an onset cohort of adults with type 1 diabetes

2003

Previous studies indicate a high prevalence of psychiatric disorders in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus. The aim of our study was to determine if newly diagnosed adults with type 1 diabetes already have an elevated rate of psychiatric disorders at the beginning of their physical illness. The authors consecutively recruited 313 newly diagnosed, adult inpatients with type 1 diabetes (age 17-40 years) from 12 hospitals. A national, representative population sample of 2046 persons of a similar age range served as the reference group. Psychiatric disorders were measured in both groups using structured interviews that provided diagnoses according to DSM-IV.There was a point prevalence of 12.5…

OCT is not useful for detection of minimal diabetic retinopathy in type 1 diabetes.

2009

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been proven useful in measuring retinal thickness (RT) in patients with diabetes, although with discordant results in different studies. We examined RT in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) with or without minimal diabetic retinopathy (MDR) to test whether OCT is able to identify early retinal changes and potential correlations with metabolic parameters. RT of 102 patients with T1D (53 females, 49 males, aged 27.03 +/- 7.4 years) and of 42 healthy controls was examined, with analysis of nine different sectors (fovea, four pericentral and four peripheral sectors). According to the results of basal fundus photography, patients were divided into two grou…
