Functionalized skin-like membranes are currently under investigation for the design of a new class of Epidermal Electronics devices for sensing and healing applications. The dynamic response of epidermal antennas in presence of absorption and release of fluids is a key-point to design RFID radio-sensors and actuators. Biopartitioning micellar chromatography to predict skin permeability

Dermal absorption of chemicals is an area of increasing interest to the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, as well as in dermal exposure and risk assessment processes. In this paper the capability of biopartitioning micellar chromatography (BMC) as an in vitro technique to describe compound percutaneous absorption is evaluated. Screening of antiinflammatory medicinal plants used in traditional medicine against skin diseases

The antiinflammatory activity of twelve medicinal plants used against skin disorders were tested in different experimental models of topical inflammation and one in vitro inhibitory test against phospholipase A2 (PLA2) from Naja naja venom. Forsythia suspensa was the most active species on the arachidonic acid (AA) topical test. This last species together with Astragalus membranaceus and Ranunculus sceleratus were the most active on the 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) acute ear oedema test. Fine structure of sensilla during moulting inNeomysis integer (Leach) (Crustacea, Mysidacea)

During the moulting cycle the sensory cells and the newly formed hair shaft remain connected to the old cuticular receptive apparatus of the sensillum by the elongated outer segments of the dendrites, which run through the exuvial space. A surface coat covering the outer dendritic segments protects them against the chemical influences of the exuvial fluid. The findings suggest that the receptors remain functional until ecdysis. This moulting type is considered to be a transitional form between the moulting types so far known.

Skin-remitted photon path lengths: experimental study

Skin-remitted picosecond laser pulses were detected at four input-output fiber distances in the spectral range 560-800 nm. After deconvolution procedures, distributions and mean values of the remitted photon path lengths in forearm skin were analyzed.

Skin chromophore mapping from multi-spectral laser line images

Skin chromophore maps can be used for assessment of various skin malformations and early cancer diagnostics. Commercially available devices are bulky and expensive. We present two portable proof-of-concept device prototypes for multi-spectral laser line imaging with three (448 nm, 532 nm and 659 nm) and four (450 nm, 523 nm, 638 nm and 850 nm) wavelength laser illumination. Electron-pion discrimination with a scintillating fiber calorimeter

Abstract We report on an experimental study of a variety of techniques for discriminating between (isolated) electrons and pions in a lead and scintillating fiber calorimeter without longitudinal segmentation. Using information from the lateral shower development, from a pre-shower detector, from the time structure of the signals, or from a combination of these we measure pion rejection factors of up to several thousand while maintaining electron efficiencies of 95% or higher.

Safety and efficacy of novel dermal and epidermal microneedle delivery systems for rabies vaccination in healthy adults.

International audience; In the present pilot study, intradermal ID delivery systems with a BD microneedle from 1 to 3mm in length, and epidermal delivery (BD skin abrader) through abraded skin surface relative to standard intramuscular injection were evaluated. Circulating neutralizing antibodies were measured against the rabies virus after the Vero cells rabies vaccine was administered at D0, D7, D21 and D49. This clinical evaluation in 66 healthy volunteers shows that ID delivery using BD microneedle technology of 1/4 the IM antigen dose is safe, efficient and reliable, resulting in a protective seroconversion rate.
