The effectiveness of using LEGO® robotics kits as cognitive and social rehabilitative toys

2020

The present article offers a theoretical contribution to the understanding of the effectiveness of using robotics as cognitive and social rehabilitative toys. Starting from the theoretical foundations of educational robotics in the framework of constructionism, it provides methodological indications related to game activities with robotics behaviour construction kits, such as LEGO® Ev3. Moreover, it discusses empirical studies that evaluated the effectiveness of the use of robotics behaviour construction kits in the field of intellectual disabilities. Practical implications of the present study might be useful for educators, school psychologists, or rehabilitative therapists in the field of…

Emotional Profile and Intellectual Functioning

2015

Insufficient literature has been produced addressing children with borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) and gifted intellectual functioning (GIF). The goal of this work is to compare levels of self-esteem, depression, anxiety at school, and insecurity among children with BIF and GIF, and a control group of average intellectual functioning (AIF). There were participants of 104 children (fourth grade of primary school). Analyses revealed that children with BIF showed a lower level of self-esteem and higher levels of depression and school anxiety. Moreover, our findings highlight the co-occurrence of school anxiety, depressed mood, and insecurity among the BIF and AIF groups. One of the …

Setting Individual Goals for Pupils with Profound Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities : Engaging in the Activity Area-Based Curriculum Making

2021

The activity area-based curriculum model (AACM) is used in the Finnish basic education to support pupils—most of whom have profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD)—who could benefit more from skills that advance independent life coping. Existing studies have concentrated mainly on the Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal-setting process for pupils with milder disabilities than PIMD and have consistently demonstrated significant barriers in the process. This study explores the collaborative IEP goal-setting process for pupils with the AACM. Sixty-five Finnish special education teachers using the AACM participated in the study. Semi-structured interviews were analysed with thema…

Design principles for collaboration platforms for open education

2015

Increasing the current low uptake of Open Education Resources (OER) is a key challenge for researchers and practitioners in the field. User studies have shown that collaboration is a main success factor for successful open educational activities. However, effective collaboration in open educational contexts requires well planned processes and platforms supporting collaboration, in particular in physically distributed settings. We have been investigating the value of such platforms, their main features and user requirements to enable collaboration from immature ideas to completed resources. We used quantitative and qualitative research methods to collect insights from potential users of such…

A moral economy of patents: case of Finnish research universities' patent policies

2013

The primary objective of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of the concept of moral economy for higher education studies through a study of Finnish research universities' patent policies. Patent policies not only stimulate the commercialization of research, they also set norms for behavior and aim to clarify how to distribute rights and responsibilities during the commercialization of research results. My main research finding is that even though institutionalized university patenting is a very recent phenomenon in Finland, policies regulating it have significant similarities to the US case. The main conclusion of this paper is that the question of university patent policies should…

Intellectual property rights and economic growth

2015

Striving for greater economic growth, requires a great understanding of the underlying factors. One of the factors may be the intellectual property rights and the level of its protection. Whether it is and how does it behave are the questions answered by this thesis. The theoretical framework comes mainly from the Schumpeterian growth model. The empirical methodology uses GMM in order to obtain reliable results. The level of intellectual property rights protection in the country does seem to have a positive effect on the country’s growth rate. Furthermore it seems that the relation is non-linear: The incremental changes are different between low and high starting levels of the IPR protectio…

Mercato digitale e sistema delle successioni mortis causa

2022

The work aims to examine the curvature impressed by the current order of the market and of the "algorithmic" society, centered on social network platforms, on principles and categories of classical hereditary law, putting the system of mortis causa succession into reaction with the matter of relationships and personal rights developed on the web, marked by the changes that shake the European and internal legal framework. The study is organized according to a tripartite scheme, which distinguishes the succession in contracts for the supply of digital services, from the transmission of rights on user-generated content and on the personal data of the deceased. To then keep a unity in the const…

Assessment of Occupational Health and Job Satisfaction in Workers with Intellectual Disability: A Job Demands–Resources Perspective

2021

In the contexts where people with intellectual disability work, there are factors that determine their job satisfaction. The objective of this study was to test the adequacy of the central assumptions of the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) theory in workers with intellectual disability employed in different work alternatives. Data from 362 workers in sheltered workshops and 192 workers in supported employment were utilized. The model was contrasted using a structural equation model and a multi-group analysis. The results supported the suitability of the model and confirmed that job demands and job resources evoke two relatively independent processes such as health impairment and motivational p…
