Efficient Skin Detection under Severe Illumination Changes and Shadows
2011
International audience; This paper presents an efficient method for human skin color detection with a mobile platform. The proposed method is based on modeling the skin distribution in a log-chromaticity color space which shows good invariance properties to changing illumination. The method is easy to implement and can cope with the requirements of real-world tasks such as illumination variations, shadows and moving camera. Extensive experiments show the good performance of the proposed method and its robustness against abrupt changes of illumination and shadows.

Measuring Effort in Subprocesses of Subtitling
2021
There has been noticeable growth in the use and production of intralingual and interlingual subtitles due to technological advances and accessibility legislation. While the reception of subtitles has been increasingly studied over the years, there are only a few empirical studies that investigate the process of subtitling. This contribution gives initial results from a study that investigates the impact of reference material during post-editing of NMT of audiovisual content via language. The focus is on transcription and translation processes, the two main subprocesses of the complex task of interlingual subtitling. Applying well-established methods from TPR, key-logging and eye tracking, t…
Resolving ambiguities in a grounded human-robot interaction
2009
In this paper we propose a trainable system that learns grounded language models from examples with a minimum of user intervention and without feedback. We have focused on the acquisition of grounded meanings of spatial and adjective/noun terms. The system has been used to understand and subsequently to generate appropriate natural language descriptions of real objects and to engage in verbal interactions with a human partner. We have also addressed the problem of resolving eventual ambiguities arising during verbal interaction through an information theoretic approach.
Comparison of Statistical Methods for the Detection of Contrast Material in Echocardiographic Image Sequences
1987
Ultrasonic imaging of the heart is a diagnostic tool which is increasingly used in cardiology. In addition to the representation of important anatomical information two dimensional images provided by mechanical or electronically steered sector scanners can be used for the extraction of functional parameters of the heart (as e.g. enddiastolic volume or ejection fraction). A poor definition of the endocardial border especially resulting from the noisy appearance of the images and from qualitatively restricted echocardiograms leads to uncertainties in the quantitative analysis and therefore requires refined methods for the determination of functional parameters. Our investigations which are ba…
An Application of Iterative Identification and Control in the Robotics Field
2006
The plant model appropriate for designing the control strongly depends on the requirements. Simple models are enough to compute nondemanding controls. The parameters of well-defined structural models of flexible robot manipulators are difficult to determine because their effect is only visible if the manipulator is under strong actions or with high-frequency excitation. Thus, in this chapter, an iterative approach is suggested. This approach is applied to a one-degree-of-freedom flexible robot manipulator, first using some well-known models and then controlling a lab prototype. This approach can be used with a variety of control design and/or identification techniques.
A Direct Approach to Robot Soccer Agents: Description for the Team Mainz Rolling rains Simulation League of RoboCup ’98
1999
In the team described in this paper we realize a direct approach to soccer agents for the simulation league of the RoboCup '98- tournament. Its backbone is formed by a detailed world model. Based on information which is reconstructed on the world model level, the rule-based decision levels chose a relevant action. The architecture for the goalie is different from the regular players, introducing heterogeneousness into the team, which combines the advantages of the different control strategies.
Challenges and Confusions in Learning Version Control with Git
2014
Scholars agree on the importance of incorporating use of version control systems (VCSs) into computing curricula, so as to be able to prepare students for today’s distributed and collaborative work places. One of the present-day distributed version control systems (DVCSs) is Git, the system we have used on several courses. In this paper, we report on the challenges for learning and using the system based on a survey data collected from a project-based course and our own teaching experiences during several different kinds of computing courses. The results of this analysis are discussed and recommendations are made. peerReviewed
Network attack detection and classification by the F-transform
2015
We solve the problem of network attack detection and classification. We discuss the way of generation and simulation of an artificial network traffic data. We propose an efficient algorithm for data classification that is based on the F-transform technique. The algorithm successfully passed all tests and moreover, it showed ability to perform classification in an on-line regime.
Protein data condensation for effective quaternary structure classification
2007
Many proteins are composed of two or more subunits, each associated with different polypeptide chains. The number and the arrangement of subunits forming a protein are referred to as quaternary structure. The quaternary structure of a protein is important, since it characterizes the biological function of the protein when it is involved in specific biological processes. Unfortunately, quaternary structures are not trivially deducible from protein amino acid sequences. In this work, we propose a protein quaternary structure classification method exploiting the functional domain composition of proteins. It is based on a nearest neighbor condensation technique in order to reduce both the porti…
