Automatic image representation for content-based access to personal photo album

2007

The proposed work exploits methods and techniques for automatic characterization of images for content-based access to personal photo libraries. Several techniques, even if not reliable enough to address the general problem of content-based image retrieval, have been proven quite robust in a limited domain such as the one of personal photo album. In particular, starting from the observation that most personal photos depict a usually small number of people in a relatively small number of different contexts (e.g. Beach, Public Garden, Indoor, Nature, Snow, City, etc...) we propose the use of automatic techniques borrowed from the fields of computer vision and pattern recognition to index imag…

Efficiency improvement of DC* through a Genetic Guidance

2017

DC∗ is a method for generating interpretable fuzzy information granules from pre-classified data. It is based on the subsequent application of LVQ1 for data compression and an ad-hoc procedure based on A∗ to represent data with the minimum number of fuzzy information granules satisfying some interpretability constraints. While being efficient in tackling several problems, the A∗ procedure included in DC∗ may happen to require a long computation time because the A∗ algorithm has exponential time complexity in the worst case. In this paper, we approach the problem of driving the search process of A∗ by suggesting a close-to-optimal solution that is produced through a Genetic Algorithm (GA). E…

The language of emotion in short blog texts

2008

Emotion is central to human interactions, and automatic detection could enhance our experience with technologies. We investigate the linguistic expression of fine-grained emotion in 50 and 200 word samples of real blog texts previously coded by expert and naive raters. Content analysis (LIWC) reveals angry authors use more affective language and negative affect words, and that joyful authors use more positive affect words. Additionally, a co-occurrence semantic space approach (LSA) was able to identify fear (which naive human emotion raters could not do). We relate our findings to human emotion perception and note potential computational applications.

FastSLAM 2.0: Least-Squares Approach

2006

In this paper, we present a set of robust and efficient algorithms with O(N) cost for the following situations: object detection with a laser ranger; mobile robot pose estimation and a FastSLAM improved implementation. Objected detection is mainly based on a novel multiple line fitting method, related with walls at the environment. This method assumes that walls at the environment constitute a regular constrained angles. A line-based pose estimation method is also proposed, based on Least-Squares (LS). This method performs the matching of detected lines and estimated map lines and it can provide the global pose estimation under assumption of known Data-Association. FastSLAM 1.0 has been imp…

A multiagent system approach for image segmentation using genetic algorithms and extremal optimization heuristics

2006

We propose a new distributed image segmentation algorithm structured as a multiagent system composed of a set of segmentation agents and a coordinator agent. Starting from its own initial image, each segmentation agent performs the iterated conditional modes method, known as ICM, in applications based on Markov random fields, to obtain a sub-optimal segmented image. The coordinator agent diversifies the initial images using the genetic crossover and mutation operators along with the extremal optimization local search. This combination increases the efficiency of our algorithm and ensures its convergence to an optimal segmentation as it is shown through some experimental results.

Statistical atlas based exudate segmentation

2013

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is characterized by hard exudates. In this article, we propose a novel statistical atlas based method for segmentation of such exudates. Any test fundus image is first warped on the atlas co-ordinate and then a distance map is obtained with the mean atlas image. This leaves behind the candidate lesions. Post-processing schemes are introduced for final segmentation of the exudate. Experiments with the publicly available HEI-MED data-set shows good performance of the method. A lesion localization fraction of 82.5% at 35% of non-lesion localization fraction on the FROC curve is obtained. The method is also compared to few most recent reference methods.

Three-dimentional tracking of human eye

2003

The study of human movements is the object of numerous searches, among them, the study of the face movements and more particularly the eye kinetics estimate represents an important part. A study realized by artificial vision is presented here. It allows to characterize eye movements in normal shooting condition (mobility of the subject, background lighting). Our approach allows to obtain in a simple way the localization of the iris and the characterization of their movement in the three dimensional shape. The absolute 3D movement of eyeballs and their relative movement with regard to the head are obtained, even if this one are moving.

Greenfield FDI attractiveness index: a machine learning approach

2022

Purpose This study aims to propose a comprehensive greenfield foreign direct investment (FDI) attractiveness index using exploratory factor analysis and automated machine learning (AML). We offer offer a robust empirical measurement of location-choice factors identified in the FDI literature through a novel method and provide a tool for assessing the countries' investment potential. Design/methodology/approach Based on five conceptual key sub-domains of FDI, We collected quantitative indicators in several databases with annual data ranging from 2006 to 2019. This study first run a factor analysis to identify the most important features. It then uses AML to assess the relative importance of…

RootsGLOH2: embedding RootSIFT 'square rooting' in sGLOH2

2020

This study introduces an extension of the shifting gradient local orientation histogram doubled (sGLOH2) local image descriptor inspired by RootSIFT ‘square rooting’ as a way to indirectly alter the matching distance used to compare the descriptor vectors. The extended descriptor, named RootsGLOH2, achieved the best results in terms of matching accuracy and robustness among the latest state-of-the-art non-deep descriptors in recent evaluation contests dealing with both planar and non-planar scenes. RootsGLOH2 also achieves a matching accuracy very close to that obtained by the best deep descriptors to date. Beside confirming that ‘square rooting’ has beneficial effects on sGLOH2 as it happe…

Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Microstructure Evolution during Linear Friction Welding of Ti6Al4V

2015

Abstract Linear Friction Welding (LFW) is a solid state welding process used to joint bulk components. In the paper, an experimental and numerical study on LFW of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy is presented. A laboratory designed LFW machine has been used to weld the specimens with different contact pressure and oscillation frequency. The joint microstructure has been experimentally observed with SEM and EDS. A dedicated numerical model, able to predict temperature, strain and strain rate distribution as well as the phase volume fraction evolution, has been utilized to predict the final microstructure in the welded parts. It was found that complete transformation of the alpha phase into beta phase …
