The aim of this research was to examine key correlates of the interaction between work and family in one Nordic country, Finland, using a person- oriented and variable-oriented approach. The correlates that were chosen and examined over the course of three studies were job control and work-family boundary management styles, turnover intention, core self-evaluations, and vigor at work. Study I was part of a 2-year longitudinal study which was conducted in two Finnish universities (n = 700); Study II consisted of two samples, one of university employees (University 1, n = 666; University 2, n = 644), and the other of nurses (n = 301) from one healthcare district in Finland; and Study III used…

2019

The purpose of this study is to empirically test a model that examines the roles of offline activities and customer value creation on tourists’ continuance use of online travel communities (OTCs). Hypotheses were tested through a sample of 251 respondents on Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). SmartPLS structural equation modelling was used to test the structural model. Results indicated that offline activities significantly influence hedonic and social values, while this support was not found with functional value. Similarly, while offline activities positively influence continuance usage intention, no positive relationship was established between offline activities and recommendation intentio…

2023

This study presents the preliminary findings of the first round of implementation of a case study included in the Horizon 2020 project SMOOTH. The project's main objective is to introduce and study the emergent paradigm of the educational commons as an alternative system of values and actions for promoting intercultural and intergenerational dialogue and establishing spaces of democratic citizenship that support the development of local communities. Psychological and behavioural factors of unintentional doping: A preliminary systematic review

2018

In some cases, doping in sport is an intentional goal-directed behaviour, but research suggests that it might also occur accidentally when athletes inadvertently or unintentionally consume banned performance-enhancing drugs via food, supplements, or medication. Because research into the psychological factors of unintentional doping is still emerging, this paper aims to conduct a preliminary systematic review of all the existing literature concerning the psychology of unintentional doping in sport. The systematic review was carried out via an extensive search of Medline, PsycINFO, PsycTESTS, PsycARTICLES, and Web of Science, and reports from World Anti-Doping Agency. Among the 2110 articles …

Is it a tool or a toy? How user's conception of a system’s purpose affect their experience and use

2019

The boundary between hedonic and utilitarian information systems has become increasingly blurred during recent years due to the rise of developments such as gamification. Therefore, users may perceive the purpose of the same system differently, ranging from pure utility to pure play. However, in literature that addresses why people adopt and use information systems, the relationship between the users conception of the purpose of the system, and their experience and use of it has not yet been investigated. Therefore, in this study we investigate the interaction effects between users’ utility-fun conceptions of the system and the perceived enjoyment and usefulness from its use, on their post-…

Extended valence theory perspective on consumers' e-waste recycling intentions in Japan

2021

The gravity of the electronic waste (e-waste) crisis can be attributed to consumers' low participation in ensuring the proper disposal of such materials. Motivating consumers to recycle e-waste requires a deeper understanding of the dimensions that underlie behavioral intentions. Accordingly, the present study uses the novel framework of Valence Theory (VT) to examine how consumers evaluate their decision to recycle e-waste. The authors propose an extended VT model incorporating consumer values (value compatibility, openness to change, and environmental concerns), which is validated using cross-sectional survey data from 774 Japanese consumers. We also examine the role of different moderato…

A critical examination of existential feeling

2018

Matthew Ratcliffe (2008, 2015) has argued that existential feelings form a distinct class of bodily and non-conceptual feelings that pre-intentionally structure our intentional experience of others, the world, and ourselves. In this article, I will identify and discuss three interrelated areas of concern for Ratcliffe’s theory of existential feelings. First, the distinct senses in which existential feelings are felt as background bodily feelings and as spaces of possibility calls for further clarification. Second, the nature of the suggested bi-directional relationship between existential feelings and intentional experience remains ambiguous. Third, viewed in light of existential guilt, the…
