Fibrous reinforced concrete beams in flexure: Experimental investigation, analytical modelling and design considerations

2008

Abstract The flexural behavior of plain and fibrous reinforced concrete (FRC) beams under monotonic and cyclic actions was analysed. Twelve beams were reinforced with top and bottom longitudinal deformed steel bars and transverse steel stirrups. Concrete, having 30 MPa cylindrical strength, was reinforced with hooked steel fibres at a volume percentage of 1%. Beams, 600 mm in length and with a square side cross-section of 150 mm, were tested in flexure using a three point bending test, adopting three different cover thicknesses of 5, 15 and 25 mm, respectively. The results obtained show that the addition of fibers increases the bearing capacity of the beams and ensures more ductile behaviou…

Influence of the Ce: YAG amount on structure and optical properties of Ce:YAG-PMMA composites for white LED

2016

Ce:YAG-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites were prepared by using a melt compounding method, adding several amounts of Ce:YAG in the range 0.1–5wt.%. The optical properties of the obtained composites and of the composites combined with a blue LED were measured to investigate the effect of the amount of Ce:YAG on the resulting emitted light in view of possible application in white LED manufacture. An increase in Ce:YAG amount caused an increase in the emission and a shift of 15 nm, influencing the white LED performance. The structure and morphology of the composites were studied. The results show that the interaction between the two components, observed by using solid state NMR exper…

Structural Behavior of Telescopic Steel Pipe for a Full-Scale 60 kW Wind Turbine Tower

2020

A simple analytical model, including local effects due to buckling and shear to moment interaction, was developed to pre-dict the load-carrying capacity of CHS tubes under flexure and shear. A finite-element analysis with ABAQUS Code was also conducted for validation of the proposed model. By properly modeling the imperfection effects due to the ovalization of steel tube, a good correlation of the structural response and failure mode was also achieved, and a good correlation with the analytical model was also achieved. Numerical and analytical results were compared with experimental results recently obtained by the author with good agreement. Experimental tests refer to full-scale static te…

A BASIC MODEL OF INTERACTING SUBJECTS

1980

Abstract In studying the problem of interaction between subjects, an approach which allows us to define in an unambiguous way the concepts of symmetrical, complementary and parallel interaction is proposed. This approach makes use of a point of view within which it is possible to develop a rational model based only on some fundamental elements of set theory and mathematical logic The model allows us to develop a probabilistic theory of change, the representation basis of which is furnished by the 16 basic set functions. The functions represent operations on two partially overlapping sets, which will be called the “worlds”, of interacting subjects.. Both an interaction test that allows a “me…

On the sure criticality of tasks in activity networks with imprecise durations

2002

BB; International audience; The notion of the necessary criticality (both with respect to path and to activity) of a network with imprecisely defined (by means of intervals or fuzzy intervals) activity duration times is introduced and analyzed. It is shown, in the interval case, that both the problem of asserting whether a given path is necessarily critical and the problem of determining an arbitrary necessarily critical path (more exactly, a subnetwork covering all the necessarily critical. paths) are easy. The corresponding solution algorithms are proposed. However, the problem. of evaluating whether a given activity is necessarily critical does not seem to be such. Certain conditions are…

Construction and optimality of a special class of balanced designs

2006

The use of balanced designs is generally advisable in experimental practice. In technological experiments, balanced designs optimize the exploitation of experimental resources, whereas in marketing research experiments they avoid erroneous conclusions caused by the misinterpretation of interviewed customers. In general, the balancing property assures the minimum variance of first-order effect estimates. In this work the authors consider situations in which all factors are categorical and minimum run size is required. In a symmetrical case, it is often possible to find an economical balanced design by means of algebraic methods. Conversely, in an asymmetrical case algebraic methods lead to e…

The Materialisation of Children’s Mathematical Thinking Through Organisation of Turn-Taking in Small Group Interactions in Kindergarten

2020

This chapter reports from a case study which focuses on the coordination of turn-taking within two small groups of kindergarten children (age 5–6) working on addition problems. The two segments of small group interaction were analysed from a multimodal, interpretative perspective. Drawing on Radford’s (J Res Math Educ, 2:7–44, 2013) theory of knowledge objectification, the study explores the characteristics of children’s turn-taking and what role children’s organisation of turn-taking plays in the movement of the joint activity, and thus for the materialisation of their mathematical thinking. The findings suggest that children’s various ways of organising turn-taking give rise to different …

Molecular electric quadrupole moments calculated with matrix dressed SDCI

2002

Abstract We have calculated the molecular electric quadrupole moment (MEQM) for the set of molecules N 2 , C 2 H 2 , CO, CO 2 , CS 2 , HF, and BH. We have used SR-SDCI and (SC) 2 -SR-SDCI methods and we have compared our results with high-level theoretical ones, including FCI values for HF and BH, and with experimental values. The calculated MEQM provides a test of the effect that the energy converged (SC) 2 dressing method brings to the SDCI wavefunctions. The results suggest that the (SC) 2 -SR-SDCI method can be a cost-effective and quite accurate method for the calculation of post-SCF effects on electric quadrupole moments.

Temporal patterns in immune responses to a range of microbial insults (Tenebrio molitor).

2008

8 pages; International audience; Much work has elucidated the pathways and mechanisms involved in the production of insect immune effector systems. However, the temporal nature of these responses with respect to different immune insults is less well understood. This study investigated the magnitude and temporal variation in phenoloxidase and antimicrobial activity in the mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor in response to a number of different synthetic and real immune elicitors. We found that antimicrobial activity in haemolymph increased rapidly during the first 48h after a challenge and was maintained at high levels for at least 14 days. There was no difference in the magnitude of responses …

Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of Kidney Transplant Recipients Using Profiled Support Vector Machines

2007

This paper proposes a twofold approach for therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of kidney recipients using support vector machines (SVMs), for both predicting and detecting Cyclosporine A (CyA) blood concentrations. The final goal is to build useful, robust, and ultimately understandable models for individualizing the dosage of CyA. We compare SVMs with several neural network models, such as the multilayer perceptron (MLP), the Elman recurrent network, finite/infinite impulse response networks, and neural network ARMAX approaches. In addition, we present a profile-dependent SVM (PD-SVM), which incorporates a priori knowledge in both tasks. Models are compared numerically, statistically, and in…
