Introducing a novel mesh following technique for approximation-free robotic tool path trajectories
2017
Abstract Modern tools for designing and manufacturing of large components with complex geometries allow more flexible production with reduced cycle times. This is achieved through a combination of traditional subtractive approaches and new additive manufacturing processes. The problem of generating optimum tool-paths to perform specific actions (e.g. part manufacturing or inspection) on curved surface samples, through numerical control machinery or robotic manipulators, will be increasingly encountered. Part variability often precludes using original design CAD data directly for toolpath generation (especially for composite materials), instead surface mapping software is often used to gener…
A Context-Aware System for Ambient Assisted Living
2017
In the near future, the world's population will be characterized by an increasing average age, and consequently, the number of people requiring for a special household assistance will dramatically rise. In this scenario, smart homes will significantly help users to increase their quality of life, while maintaining a great level of autonomy. This paper presents a system for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) capable of understanding context and user's behavior by exploiting data gathered by a pervasive sensor network. The knowledge inferred by adopting a Bayesian knowledge extraction approach is exploited to disambiguate the collected observations, making the AAL system able to detect and predict…
An Ambient Intelligence System for Assisted Living
2017
Nowadays, the population's average age is constantly increasing, and thus the need for specialized home assistance is on the rise. Smart homes especially tailored to meet elderly and disabled people's needs can help them maintaining their autonomy, whilst ensuring their safety and well-being. This paper proposes a complete context-aware system for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), which infers user's actions and context, analyzing its past and current behavior to detect anomalies and prevent possible emergencies. The proposed system exploits Dynamic Bayesian Networks to merge raw data coming from heterogeneous sensors and infer user's behavior and health conditions. A rule-based reasoner is ab…
Pdl1 Is a Putative Lipase that Enhances Photorhabdus Toxin Complex Secretion
2012
The Toxin Complex (TC) is a large multi-subunit toxin first characterized in the insect pathogens Photorhabdus and Xenorhabdus, but now seen in a range of pathogens, including those of humans. These complexes comprise three protein subunits, A, B and C which in the Xenorhabdus toxin are found in a 4∶1∶1 stoichiometry. Some TCs have been demonstrated to exhibit oral toxicity to insects and have the potential to be developed as a pest control technology. The lack of recognisable signal sequences in the three large component proteins hinders an understanding of their mode of secretion. Nevertheless, we have shown the Photorhabdus luminescens (Pl) Tcd complex has been shown to associate with th…
Biosensors for the determination of SARS-CoV-2 virus and diagnosis of COVID-19 infection
2022
Monitoring and tracking infection is required in order to reduce the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), induced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). To achieve this goal, the development and deployment of quick, accurate, and sensitive diagnostic methods are necessary. The determination of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is performed by biosensing devices, which vary according to detection methods and the biomarkers which are inducing/providing an analytical signal. RNA hybridisation, antigen-antibody affinity interaction, and a variety of other biological reactions are commonly used to generate analytical signals that can be precisely detected using electro…
Bis(4-methylthio)phenylthiomethane as assembling ligand for the construction of Cu(I) and Hg(II) coordination polymers. Crystal structures and topolo…
2016
International audience; The novel 1D coordination polymer (CP) [{Cu(mu(2)-Br)(2)Cu}(mu-L2)(2)] CP2 has been obtained by reaction of the tetrakisthioether p-MeSC6H4SCH2SC6H4SMe-p (L2) with CuBr in a 1: 2 metal-to ligand ratio. In contrast to the previously described CP [{Cu(mu(2)-Br)(2)Cu}(mu-L1)(2)] CP1 obtained by reaction of the tetrakisthioether p-MeOC6H4SCH2SC6H4OMe-p (L1) with CuBr, the two independent extended 1D ribbons contain bent Cu(mu(2)-Br)(2)Cu units of the butterfly-type with short Cu center dot center dot center dot Cu separations of 2.679(1) and 2.613(1) angstrom. In contrast to the common planar rhomboid Cu(mu(2)-Br)(2)Cu cluster, this butterfly-shaped geometry of the core …
Symmetry-based canonical dressing of a bidimensionally trapped and laser-driven ion
2001
Abstract We present a detailed and exact construction of a unitary operator accomplishing the diagonalization of an effective quadratic radiation-matter interaction model describing a bidimensionally trapped and appropriately laser-driven ion. The possibility of applying the same mathematical method to other effective radiation-matter interaction model is briefly put into evidence.
Expert‑panel accreditation evaluation‑practices: an autoethnographic case study of the Community of Madrid
2017
Accreditation is defined by the European Higher Education Area quality‑assurance agencies as a key element in quality management and continuous improvement in university teaching‑learning processes, and is an institutional practice that started to be developed in 2014 in Spain. This article illustrates the case of the Community of Madrid Quality Agency, as case study analysis through my experience as a panel member for the accreditation of higher‑education qualifications. Methodologically, it is based on an autoethnographic approach and uses the theory of symbolic interactionism to reveal and analyse the evaluative process and culture. For this purpose, two analytical axes were drawn: stude…
