AbstractThis paper presents numerical simulations within the frame of the project SERA—AIMS (Seismic Testing of Adjacent Interacting Masonry Structures). The study includes blind pre-diction and post-diction stages. The former was developed before performing the shaking table tests at the laboratory facilities of LNEC (Lisbon), while the latter was carried out once the test results were known. For both, three-dimensional finite element models were prepared following a macro-modelling approach. Earthquakes produce on infills In-Plane (IP) and Out-Of-Plane (OOP) actions. The recent earthquakes have proved that the OOP collapse of infills is a diffused mechanism also in buildings designed to resist to seismic events in agreement to the most modern strategies. This fact makes the question arises about the safety of infills with respect OOP actions. The strong interaction between IP and OOP behaviour of infills traduces in a progressively reduction of the OOP strength. An approximate physical model for evaluation of the M-V interaction resistance domains for concrete elements strengthened with FRP sheets is presented. The reliability of the model in predicting flexureshear capacity is verified by a comparison with the results of several experimental tests.

In the present paper, an analytical model is proposed that is able to determine the shear resistance of high strength reinforced concrete beams with longitudinal bars, in the presence of transverse stirrups. The model is based on the evaluation of the resistance contribution due to beam and arch actions. For the resistance contribution of the main bars in tension the residual bond adherence of steel bars and the crack spacing of R.C. beams are considered.
