Morphological Similarity and Ecological Overlap in Two Rotifer Species

Co-occurrence of cryptic species raises theoretically relevant questions regarding their coexistence and ecological similarity. Given their great morphological similitude and close phylogenetic relationship (i.e., niche retention), these species will have similar ecological requirements and are expected to have strong competitive interactions. This raises the problem of finding the mechanisms that may explain the coexistence of cryptic species and challenges the conventional view of coexistence based on niche differentiation. Long-Term Coexistence of Rotifer Cryptic Species

Despite their high morphological similarity, cryptic species often coexist in aquatic habitats presenting a challenge in the framework of niche differentiation theory and coexistence mechanisms. Here we use a rotifer species complex inhabiting highly unpredictable and fluctuating salt lakes to gain insights into the mechanisms involved in stable coexistence in cryptic species. We combined molecular barcoding surveys of planktonic populations and paleogenetic analysis of diapausing eggs to reconstruct the current and historical coexistence dynamics of two highly morphologically similar rotifer species, B. plicatilis and B. manjavacas. Polynucleotide differentiation using hybrid solid-state nanopore functionalizing with α-hemolysin

We report results from full atomistic molecular dynamics simulations on the properties of biomimetic nanopores. This latter result was obtained through the direct insertion of an α-hemolysin protein inside a hydrophobic solid-state nanopore. Upon translocation of different DNA strands, we demonstrate here that the theoretical system presents the same discrimination properties as the experimental one obtained previously. This opens an interesting way to promote the stability of a specific protein inside a solid nanopore to develop further biomimetic applications for DNA or protein sequencing.

First-forbidden transitions in reactor antineutrino spectra

© 2019 American Physical Society. We study the dominant forbidden transitions in the antineutrino spectra of the fission actinides from 4 MeV onward using the nuclear shell model. Through explicit calculation of the shape factor, we show the expected changes in cumulative electron and antineutrino spectra. Relative to the allowed approximation this results in a minor decrease of electron spectra above 4 MeV, whereas an increase of several percent is observed in antineutrino spectra. Profiling of lipid species by normal-phase liquid chromatography, nanoelectrospray ionization, and ion trap–orbitrap mass spectrometry

Detailed analysis of lipid species can be challenging due to their structural diversity and wide concentration range in cells, tissues, and biofluids. To address these analytical challenges, we devised a reproducible, sensitive, and integrated lipidomics workflow based on normal-phase liquid chromatography-Fourier transform mass spectrometry (LC-FTMS) and LC-ITMS(2) (ion trap tandem mass spectrometry) for profiling and structural analysis of lipid species. Theoretical investigations of the IR spectroscopy of Ni(C(2)S(2)H(2))(2). A case study of the P_VMWCI(2) algorithm including anharmonic effects.

The near infrared (NIR) spectra of bis(ethylene-1,2-dithiolato)nickel, Ni(C(2)S(2)H(2))(2) are fully interpreted here by applying a method developed for efficient automatic computation of both the infrared wave numbers and the intensities. The employed procedure uses parallel variational multiple window configuration interaction wave functions, the so-named P_VMWCI(2) algorithm, which incorporates both the mechanical and the electric anharmonic effects. The effect of beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) on the mononuclear heterocyclic rearrangement of the (Z)-phenylhydrazone of 3-benzoyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole (1) in aqueous borate buffer at pH = 9.6 has been analyzed at temperatures ranging from 293.15 to 313.15 K. The trend of the absorption spectra of 1 as a function of time has been accounted for with the formation of two different 1:1 complexes between beta-CD and 1, the first, "unreactive" complex being formed faster than the "reactive" one. Molecular mechanism of T-cell protein tyrosine phosphatase (TCPTP) activation by mitoxantrone.

T-cell protein tyrosine phosphatase (TCPTP) is a ubiquitously expressed non-receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase. It is involved in the negative regulation of many cellular signaling pathways. Thus, activation of TCPTP could have important therapeutic applications in diseases such as cancer and inflammation. We have previously shown that the α-cytoplasmic tail of integrin α1β1 directly binds and activates TCPTP. In addition, we have identified in a large-scale high-throughput screen six small molecules that activate TCPTP. These small molecule activators include mitoxantrone and spermidine. A Computational Study of Two-State Conformational Changes in 16-Electron [CpW(NO)(L)] Complexes (L=PH3, CO, CH2, HCCH, H2CCH2)

International audience; High-spin and low-spin [CpW(NO) (L)] complexes are calculated to be remarkably close in energy. Several critical conformational changes in the singlet compounds are predicted to proceed more readily by spin crossover to the triplet hypersurface. The relationships between spin state, π bonding, ligand orientation, and geometry at W are explored.
