Children’s Engagement with Mathematics in Kindergarten Mediated by the Use of Digital Tools
2013
The purpose of this chapter is to study children’s engagement with mathematics in kindergarten mediated by digital tools within the context of interactive whiteboard (IWB). Our study reports from a research project aiming at analysing in what ways digital tools may nurture children’s appropriation processes relative to mathematics. In adopting a sociocultural perspective on learning and development, observations together with video recordings have been analysed. Our study shows that the children make sense of the digital tools and are able to apply the tools purposefully due to the interaction with an adult within the zone of proximal development (ZPD). The children externalise their reason…
Improving Communication in Risk Management of Health Information Technology Systems by means of Medical Text Simplification
2019
Health Information Technology Systems (HITS) are increasingly used to improve the quality of patient care while reducing costs. These systems have been developed in response to the changing models of care to an ongoing relationship between patient and care team, supported by the use of technology due to the increased instance of chronic disease. However, the use of HITS may increase the risk to patient safety and security. While standards can be used to address and manage these risks, significant communication problems exist between experts working in different departments. These departments operate in silos often leading to communication breakdowns. For example, risk management stakeholder…
In silico, spectroscopic, and biological insights on annelated pyrrolo[3,2-e]pyrimidines with antiproliferative activity
2013
The in silico COMPARE analysis was performed on 8-[3-(piperidino)propyl]-4,10-dimethyl-9-phenyl-6-(methylsulfanyl)-3,4-dihydropyrimido[1,2-c]pyrrolo[3,2-e]pyrimidin-2(8H)-one, a compound with promising antiproliferative activity, previously synthetized and screened against a panel of 60 human tumor cell lines. The results evidenced that this compound matches the biological properties of Chromomycin A3 and Actinomycin D, known drugs with high DNA binding affinity. Prompted by such results, a thorough spectroscopic investigation of its DNA aqueous solutions was performed, with the aim to verify its DNA-binding properties. DNA groove-binding interaction was assigned by UV-vis spectrophotometri…
Explorations on interactive interfaces using cuteness
2007
The experience of interactive systems can be a rather complex set of events. The perceptions appeal to the user's senses including visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory. Taken from a human factors approach, the sensitivity of the senses can be measured very closely and units of measurement arise from the "just noticeable difference." These differences can be mapped to the physics behind the stimuli and computer controlled systems very accurately provide sensation to the user through various user interfaces. The human mind also plays an important role in making sense of the experience not only from a physiological standpoint, but from a psychological and cultural reference poin…
A grid representation for distributed virtual environments
2004
Fast Internet connections and the widespread use of high performance graphic cards are making Distributed Virtual Environments (DVE) very common nowadays. The architecture and behavior of these systems are very similar to new grid computing applications where concepts such as sharing and high scalability are extremely exploited. However, there are several key issues in these systems that should still be improved in order to design a scalable and cost-effective DVE system. One of these key issues is the partitioning problem. This problem consists of efficiently assigning clients (3-D avatars) to the arbiters (servers) in the system. As an alternative to the ad-hoc heuristic proposed in the l…
Efficiently using connectivity information between triangles in a mesh for real-time rendering
2004
Triangle meshes are the most popular standard model used to represent polygonal surfaces. Drawing these meshes as a set of independent triangles involves sending a vast amount of information to the graphics system. Taking advantage of the connectivity information between the triangles in a mesh dramatically diminishes the amount of information the graphics system must handle. Multiresolution Triangle Strips (MTS) represent a triangle mesh as a collection of multiresolution triangles strips. These strips are the basis of both the storage and the rendering stage. The coherence between the extraction of two levels of detail is used in the model in order to decrease the visualisation time.
Remote interspecies interactions: Improving humans and animals wellbeing through mobile playful spaces
2019
[EN] Play is an essential activity for both humans and animals as it provides stimulation and favors cognitive, physical and social development. This paper proposes a novel pervasive playful environment that allows hospitalized children to participate in remote interspecies play with dogs in a dog daycare facility, while it also allows the dogs to play by themselves with the pervasive system. The aim of this playful interactive space is to help improving both children¿s and animal¿s wellbeing and their relationships by means of technologically mediated play, while creating a solid knowledge base to define the future of pervasive interactive environments for animals.
Touch or touchless?:Evaluating usability of interactive displays for persons with autistic spectrum disorders
2019
Interactive public displays have been exploited and studied for engaging interaction in several previous studies. In this context, applications have been focused on supporting learning or entertainment activities, specifically designed for people with special needs. This includes, for example, those with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). In this paper, we present a comparison study aimed at understanding the difference in terms of usability, effectiveness, and enjoyment perceived by users with ASD between two interaction modalities usually supported by interactive displays: touch-based and touchless gestural interaction. We present the outcomes of a within-subject setup involving 8 ASD users…
