A Pedagogical Software for the Analysis of Loudspeaker Systems
2009
In this paper, a pedagogical software for the design and analysis of loudspeaker systems is presented, with emphasis on training students in the interaction between system parameters. Loudspeakers are complex electromechanical system, whose behavior is neither intuitive nor easy to understand by inexperienced students. Although commercial simulation software provides computation of the equations governing loudspeaker systems, they are mainly focused on the final product and are intended for experienced audio engineers. The proposed software was intentionally designed for education and training purposes. This software allows students to investigate loudspeaker systems that involve complex in…
A Newcomer's Guide to EICS, the Engineering Interactive Computing Systems Community
2019
[EN] Welcome to EICS, the Engineering Interactive Computing Systems community, PACMHCI/EICS journal, and annual conference! In this short article, we introduce newcomers to the field and to our community with an overview of what EICS is and how it positions with respect to other venues in Human-Computer Interaction, such as CHI, UIST, and IUI, highlighting its legacy and paying homage to past scientific events from which EICS emerged. We also take this opportunity to enumerate and exemplify scientific contributions to the field of Engineering Interactive Computing Systems, which we hope to guide researchers and practitioners towards making their future PACMHCI/EICS submissions successful an…
Vers une tridimensionalité du contrôle interactif
2011
We propose in this paper to revisit the concept of interactive control, highlighted by Robert Simons, examining the use of "environmental control systems" in Ten French Companies proactive in ecology. By showing that interactivity of "control systems" is not limited to a vertical dimension as suggested by Simons, but it tends towards three-dimensional (vertical, transversal and external), this study highlights the interest of explore further upstream the concept of interactive control little studied in the literature.
Generating harmonic surfaces for interactive design
2014
Abstract A method is given for generating harmonic tensor product Bezier surfaces and the explicit expression of each point in the control net is provided as a linear combination of prescribed boundary control points. The matrix of scalar coefficients of these combinations works like a mould for harmonic surfaces. Thus, real-time manipulation of the resulting surfaces subject to modification of prescribed information is possible.
Acoustic rendering of particle-based simulation of liquids in motion
2009
In interaction and interface design, the representation of continuous processes often uses liquid metaphors, such as dripping or streaming. When an auditory display of such processes is required, an approach to sound-synthesis based on the physics of liquids in motion would be the most convincing, especially when real-time interaction is into play. In order to bridge the complexity of fluid-dynamic simulations with the needs of interactive sonification, we propose a multi-rate sound synthesis of liquid phenomena. Low-rate smoothed-particle hydrodynamics is used to model liquids in motion and to trigger sound-emitting events. Such events, such as solid-liquid collision, or bubble formation, …
Mental contents in interacting with a multiobjective optimization program
2008
User psychology aims at understanding human-machine interaction from a psychological point of view. Its ultimate goal is to provide knowledge about human psychological properties for interaction designers. In this article, we are particularly interested in applying the theoretical concepts of mental contents (i.e., the information contents of users’ mental representations), in studying interaction with professional software. The immediate motivation for adopting such an approach arises from problems met in designing interaction processes in multiobjective optimization software. These types of software are meant to support complex thought and decision-making processes and this is why interac…
GAIML: A New Language for Verbal and Graphical Interaction in Chatbots
2008
One of the aims of the research in the field of the human-computer interaction is the design of a natural and intuitive interaction modalities. In particular, many efforts have been devoted in the development of systems able to interact with the user in natural language. Chatbots are the classical interfaces for natural language interaction. Such systems can be very sophisticated, including support for 3D avatars and speech analysis and synthesis. However, all of them present only a text area allowing the user to input her sentences. No doubt, an interaction involving also the natural language can increase the comfort of the user with respect to common interfaces using only graphical widget…
Blended learning in master studies in Mathematical Information Technology — Impacts on attendance and learning outcomes
2011
Blended learning based on lecture videos and face-to-face teaching provides good opportunities for students for participation in education, regardless of time or place. This article examines the impacts of blended learning, as it has developed in connection with master studies in information technology, on participation in education and on learning outcomes. The solution is based on face-to-face teaching and the use of streaming lecture videos. According to the results, the use of lecture videos increases participation activeness, and the increase in participation has a positive impact on completion of courses. However, the use of lecture videos does not seem to have any clear-cut effect on…
