<title>In-situ x-ray absorption fine structure and x-ray diffraction studies of hydrogen intercalation in tungsten oxides</title>

We present in-situ x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) (at the W L 3 -edge) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies of hydrogen intercalation into stable monoclinic (m-WO 3 ) and metastable hexagonal (h-WO 3 ) and cubic (c-WO 3 ) phases of tungsten oxide. The analysis of XAFS and XRD data allowed us to reconstruct the local environment around tungsten ions in the first coordination shell. The obtained results are compared with the existing structural models.

Controlling the Formation of Sodium/Black Phosphorus IntercalationCompounds Towards High Sodium Content

The solid-state synthesis of pure sodium-black phosphorus intercalation compounds (Na-BPICs) has been optimized in bulk for two stoichiometric ratios. Specifically, in-situ X-Ray diffraction (XRD) allowed the precise identification of the optimal temperature range for the formation of Na-BPICs: 94°C–96°C. Moreover, as the undesired formation of Na3P takes place at this very same range, we succeeded in introducing a new synthetic route based on a fast-thermal ball milling implementation that results in the bulk production of BPIC without Na3P in 9 out of 10 cases. Metal ions modify DNA-protecting and mutagen-scavenging capacities of the AV-153 1,4-dihydropyridine.

Abstract 1,4-Dihydropyridines (1,4-DHP) possess important biochemical and pharmacological properties, including antioxidant and antimutagenic activities. AV-153-Na, an antimutagenic and DNA-repair enhancing compound was shown to interact with DNA by intercalation. Here we studied DNA binding of several AV-153 salts to evaluate the impact of AV-153 modifications on its DNA binding capacity, the ability to scavenge the peroxynitrite, to protect HeLa and B-cells cells against DNA damage. Affinity of the AV-153 salts to DNA measured by a fluorescence assay was dependent on the metal ion forming a salt in position 4 of the 1,4-DHP, and it decreased as follows: Mg > Na > Ca > Li > Rb > K. DNA-binding studies of AV-153, an antimutagenic and DNA repair-stimulating derivative of 1,4-dihydropiridine.

Abstract The ability to intercalate between DNA strands determines the cytotoxic activity of numerous anticancer drugs. Strikingly, intercalating activity was also reported for some compounds considered to be antimutagenic. The aim of this study was to determine the mode of interaction of DNA with the antimutagenic and DNA repair-stimulating dihydropyridine (DHP) AV-153. DNA and AV-153 interactions were studied by means of UV/VIS spectroscopy, fluorimetry and infrared spectroscopy. Polyamide-Based Fibers Containing Microwave-Exfoliated Graphite Nanoplatelets

Exfoliated Graphite NanoPlatelets (GNP) have been obtained from Graphite Intercalation Compounds (GIC) subjected to thermal and microwave treatments. Accurate morphological and structural characterization of obtained GNP, performed to compare the degree of exfoliation, show that microwave-treated GNP, exhibit well-exfoliated structure, without any reduction in dimensions compared with the native GIC, differently to the thermal-treated ones. Microwave-treated GNP have been introduced in polyamide (PA) through melt-mixing to obtain nanocomposite that has been subjected to elongational flow, with the aim to improve the nanofiller dispersion and induce GNP orientation along the fiber direction.…

Disappearance of correlations in the atom motion upon hydrogen intercalation into ReO3lattice

The influence of hydrogen intercalation on the local structure of rhenium trioxide is studied in-situ by the Re L3-edge EXAFS spectroscopy and analysed using a novel approach, based on the use of evolutionary algorithm and wavelet transform. The proposed method allows us to perform accurate EXAFS analysis within the multiple-scattering approach taking into account contributions from outer coordination shells and to access the information on correlations in atomic thermal motion.

Hybrid magnetic materials formed by ferritin intercalated into a layered double hydroxide

A hybrid magnetic material formed by ferritin intercalated into a layered double hydroxide (LDH) of Mg and Al (Mg/Al molar ratio 2) is prepared and characterized through powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). One observes an enhancement in the thermal stability of the ferritin molecules when they are inserted in the layered material. Redox-Responsive Host–Guest Chemistry of a Flexible Cage with Naphthalene Walls

"Naphthocage", a naphthalene-based organic cage, reveals very strong binding (up to 1010 M-1) to aromatic (di)cationic guests, i.e., the tetrathiafulvalene mono- and dication and methyl viologen. Intercalation of the guests between two naphthalene walls is mediated by C-H···O, C-H···π, and cation···π interactions. The guests can be switched into and out of the cage by redox processes with high binding selectivity. Oxidation of the flexible cage itself in the absence of a guest leads to a stable radical cation with the oxidized naphthalene intercalated between and stabilized by the other two. Abstract The photophysical and photochemical properties of the cationic Zn II complex of 5-triethyl ammonium methyl salicylidene ortho-phenylendiimine (ZnL 2+ ) interacting with native DNA were investigated by steady state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopies. Experimental results indicate that, in the presence of DNA, ZnL 2+ is efficiently protected from a photochemical process, which occurs when it is in the free state dispersed in aqueous solution.
