Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common and lethal malignant tumors worldwide in the human population. Due to late diagnosis and/or advanced underlying liver cirrhosis, only limited treatment options with marginal clinical benefit are available in up to 70% of patients. During the last decades, no effective conventional cytotoxic systemic therapy was available contributing to the dismal prognosis in patients with advanced disease. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disorder characterized by destruction of the articular cartilage, subchondral bone alterations and synovitis. Current treatments are focused on symptomatic relief but they lack efficacy to control the progression of this disease which is a leading cause of disability. High Lymph Vessel Density and Expression of Lymphatic Growth Factors in Peritoneal Endometriosis

To investigate the occurrence of lymph vessels and lymphangiogenic growth factors in peritoneal lesions, we performed immunohistochemical staining of peritoneal lesions of 37 patients with antibodies against podoplanin (D2-40), lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1 (LYVE-1), prospero homeobox protein 1 (Prox-1), vascular epithelial growth factor (VEGF)-C/VEGF-D. Overall, 10 lesions were double stained against D2-40 and von Willebrand factor. The lymph vessel density in peritoneal lesion was significantly higher in comparison with healthy peritoneum. Crystallization and preliminary X-ray studies of oligandrin, a sterol-carrier elicitor fromPythium oligandrum

Oligandrin is a 10 kDa acidic protein produced by the fungus micromycete Pythium oligandrum and is a member of the alpha-elicitin group, with sterol- and lipid-carrier properties. Oligandrin has been crystallized at 290 K using PEG 4000 as a precipitant. A cholesterol complex was obtained under the same conditions. The space group of the crystals at low temperature (100 K) is C222, with unit-cell parameters a = 94.0, b = 171.1, c = 55.3 A. Four molecules are present in the asymmetric unit. Data from the free and cholesterol-complexed forms were recorded at synchrotron sources to resolutions of 2.4 (uncomplexed) and 1.9 A (complexed), respectively.

Second-generation Langerhans cells originating from epidermal precursors are essential for CD8+ T cell priming.

Abstract In vivo studies questioned the ability of Langerhans cells (LCs) to mediate CD8+ T cell priming. To address this issue, we used intradermal immunization with plasmid DNA, a system in which activation of CD8+ T cells depends on delayed kinetics of Ag presentation. We found that dendritic cells (DCs) located in the skin at the time of immunization have limited ability to activate CD8+ T cells. This activity was mediated by a second generation of DCs that differentiated in the skin several days after immunization, as well as by lymph node–resident DCs. Stimulation of protein (collagen) synthesis in sponge cells by a cardiac myotrophin‐related molecule from Suberites domuncula

The body wall of sponges (Porifera), the lowest metazoan phylum, is formed by two epithelial cell layers of exopinacocytes and endopinacocytes, both of which are associated with collagen fibrils. Here we show that a myotrophin-like polypeptide from the sponge Suberites domuncula causes the expression of collagen in cells from the same sponge in vitro. The cDNA of the sponge myotrophin was isolated; the potential open reading frame of 360 nt encodes a 120 aa long protein (Mr of 12,837).
