The Trap of Proximity Violence. Research and Insights into Male Dominance and Female Resistance
2020
This book aims at shifting the emphasis from a general vision of gender-based violence to a more opaque, yet equally destructive one, that related to "proximity violence". The investigative tension of this book aims at bringing to light the crevasses where violence lurks ready to return in disguise as well as the lairs where it hides. Like a whirlwind, violence appears in all its destructive might and disappears. Precisely because violence is of a proxemic kind it is hard to position with respect to those who wish to objectify it. Its screens are many and the causes that feed it are endowed with a good dose of relational and lexical ambiguity. Because it is profoundly unjust, unfair, wrong,…
Bioelectrical coupling in multicellular domains regulated by gap junctions: A conceptual approach.
2018
We review the basic concepts involved in bioelectrically-coupled multicellular domains, focusing on the role of membrane potentials (Vmem). In the first model, single-cell Vmem is modulated by two generic polarizing and depolarizing ion channels, while intercellular coupling is implemented via voltage-gated gap junctions. Biochemical and bioelectrical signals are integrated via a feedback loop between Vmem and the transcription and translation of a protein forming an ion channel. The effective rate constants depend on the single-cell Vmem because these potentials modulate the local concentrations of signaling molecules and ions. This electrochemically-based idealization of the complex bioph…
Lay definitions of happiness across nations: The primacy of inner harmony and relational connectedness
2016
In well-being research the term happiness is often used as synonymous with life satisfaction. However, little is known about lay people's understanding of happiness. Building on the available literature, this study explored lay definitions of happiness across nations and cultural dimensions, analyzing their components and relationship with participants' demographic features. Participants were 2799 adults (age range = 30-60, 50% women) living in urban areas of Argentina, Brazil, Croatia, Hungary, India, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, and United States. They completed the Eudaimonic and Hedonic Happiness Investigation (EHHI), reporting, among other information, th…
Determination of Core Size Dependency on the EMI Suppression in Cable Ferrites
2020
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) engineering should be approached via the systems approach, considering EMC throughout the design to anticipate possible electromagnetic interferences (EMI) problems. Nevertheless, an EMI source may appear when the designed device is supplied via an external power system or it is connected to another device to communicate to it. In these both cases, the cables or interfaces that interconnect the systems could represent the EMI source. Thereby, one of the most common techniques for reducing EMI in cables is the application of an EMI suppressor such as sleeve ferrite cores to them. The advantage of this solution is that it does not involve redesign the elect…
A Method to Evaluate Voltages to Earth During an Earth Fault in an HV Network in a System of Interconnected Earth Electrodes of MV/LV Substations
2008
An easy and swift method to evaluate, in a system of interconnected earth electrodes, earth potentials on earthing systems of medium-voltage/low-voltage (MV/LV) substations, in an event of single-line-to-earth fault inside a high-voltage/medium- voltage (HV/MV) station, is presented. The advantage of the method is the simplicity of the mathematical model for solving complex systems of any size with a sufficient accuracy for practical purposes. This paper shows the results of simulations, performed on networks with different extensions and characteristics, organized in easy-to-read graphs and tables. A comparison of these results with the values obtained according to the procedure explained …
A study on the use of bare buried conductors in an extended interconnection of earthing systems inside a MV network
2005
In the field of electrical safety an important topic is the transmission of voltages, during an earth fault, inside an extended interconnection of local earthing systems. The paper presents a study, with reference to the MV networks, about those systems where the interconnection between the earth electrodes of the electrical installations is carried out using bare buried conductors. Starting from the description of the circuital model of a bare buried conductor interconnecting together the earth electrodes of two MV/lv substations, the mathematical model of the whole interconnected earthing system is found. Finally, the results of some simulations, giving the distribution of the fault curre…
Stability Analysis and Stabilization of T-S Fuzzy Delta Operator Systems with Time-Varying Delay via an Input-Output Approach
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/913234 Open Access The stability analysis and stabilization of Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy delta operator systems with time-varying delay are investigated via an input-output approach. A model transformation method is employed to approximate the time-varying delay. The original system is transformed into a feedback interconnection form which has a forward subsystem with constant delays and a feedback one with uncertainties. By applying the scaled small gain (SSG) theorem to deal with this new system, and based on a Lyapunov Krasovskii funct…
Studies for low mass, large area monolithic silicon pixel detector modules using the MALTA CMOS pixel chip
2021
Abstract The MALTA monolithic silicon pixel sensors have been used to study dicing and thinning of monolithic silicon pixel detectors for large area and low mass modules. Dicing as close as possible to the active circuitry will allow to build modules with very narrow inactive regions between the sensors. Inactive edge regions of less than 5 μ m to the electronic circuitry could be achieved for 100 μ m thick sensors. The MALTA chip (Cardella et al., 2019) also offers the possibility to transfer data and power directly from chip to chip. Tests have been carried out connecting two MALTA chips directly using ultrasonic wedge wire bonding. Results from lab tests show that the data accumulated in…
Revisiting agricultural modernisation: Interconnected farming practices driving rural development at the farm level
2019
Abstract Rural development related to agriculture can roughly be divided into two trajectories: 1) agri-industrial development or modernisation, and 2) multifunctional or even post-productivist rural development. The role of these trajectories varies in different rural settings, with different emphases on agricultural production and its conduct. At the farm level, the trajectories evolve from existing farming practices and their connections, which enable or disable different kinds of development. However, the connections through which changes in agricultural production practices contribute to different rural development trajectories deserve further scrutiny. This is addressed with the help …
Enhanced light scattering in Si nanostructures produced by pulsed laser irradiation
2013
An innovative method for Si nanostructures (NS) fabrication is proposed, through nanosecond laser irradiation (lambda = 532 nm) of thin Si film (120 nm) on quartz. Varying the laser energy fluences (425-1130 mJ/cm(2)) distinct morphologies of Si NS appear, going from interconnected structures to isolated clusters. Film breaking occurs through a laser-induced dewetting process. Raman scattering is enhanced in all the obtained Si NS, with the largest enhancement in interconnected Si structures, pointing out an increased trapping of light due to multiple scattering. The reported method is fast, scalable and cheap, and can be applied for light management in photovoltaics. (C) 2013 AIP Publishin…
