2021

My presentation focuses on interdisciplinarity and interculturality on the basis of two novels, "Les Nuits de Strasbourg" by Assia Djebar and "Le Village de l'Allemand ou le journal des frères Schiller" by Boualem Sansal. Firstly, I reflect in a general way on interdisciplinarity and its affinity with interculturality before addressing these issues in my corpus and in my work. Secondly, I look at some theories, interdisciplinary and sometimes intercultural, that help me to study my corpus in a harmonious way, which I illustrate with concrete analyses referring to the thought of Édouard Glissant. Finally, I propose interdisciplinary developments of an intercultural approach, that of Michael …

Growing a Project-Based Translation Pedagogy: A Fractal Perspective

2012

Interpretation of the Concept Gender in Legal Discourse

2018

It is commonly accepted that the language of law is often considered to be a highly traditional and, to a certain extent, a conservative means of professional communication, which tends to be stereotypically viewed impenetrable by the layman. Various peculiarities of the language of law and the fact that many legal systems differ all over the world in terms of their origins and frameworks often make legal discourse difficult to comprehend. To communicate professionally, the English language for instrumental purposes is increasingly employed at international level. Considering the above stated, the present study aims at analysing selected areas of the language of law. More specifically, usin…

Political economy as an interdisciplinary approach to European integration studies

2016

The objective of the article is to see the studies on European integration from the perspective of the political economy, which allo…

Why DSM-III was right to introduce the concept of somatoform disorders.

2005

Address correspondence and reprint requests to Dr. Hiller, Psychological Institute, University of Mainz, Staudingerweg 9, D-55099 Mainz, Germany; hiller@mail.uni-mainz.de (e-mail). Copyright 2005 The Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. An interesting debate about the adequacy of the somatoform disorders as a diagnostic and clinical concept has begun. The debate is stimulated by the announcement of APA’s preparation of DSM-V, which is likely to follow DSM-IV as the world’s most influential classification system for defining the terminology and diagnostic definitions…

Granice wiedzy o literaturze. Słowo o kilku nowych ujęciach interdyscyplinarności (z dodatkiem jednego przykładu)

2015

The paper consists of the review of a number of academic approaches to interdisciplinary research as represented by the Polish theorists of literature (Andrzej Hejmej, Michał P. Markowski, Ryszard Nycz). On the example taken from Tadeusz Nowak’s novel A jak królem, a jak katem będziesz, the author attempts to identify the nature of the close relations between anthropological and literary discourses, where the border line between them lies, and, consequently, what benefits for literary studies stem from anthropological readings.

"The human use of human beings": Interdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity and all that in biophysics and beyond.

2017

Abstract Biophysics, just by looking at its name, indicates an interdisciplinary scientific activity, although the notion of interdisciplinarity, as such, seems to be not widely or specifically discussed by biophysicists. The same seems to have happened as well in the early stages of the development of cybernetics, notably in Norbert Wiener's writings. This situation seems to contrast with what has happened in subsequent developments of cybernetics ideas, notably in general system theory and cognitive sciences. After a few general reflections on the notion of interdisciplinarity, its sophisticated variants and the path leading to the birth of cognitive science, we shall refer to Wiener's th…

Coastal Research Seen Through an Early Career Lens—A Perspective on Barriers to Interdisciplinarity in Norway

2021

The value of interdisciplinarity for solving complex coastal problems is widely recognized. Many early career researchers (ECRs) therefore actively seek this type of collaboration through choice or necessity, for professional development or project funding. However, establishing and conducting interdisciplinary research collaborations as an ECR has many challenges. Here, we identify these challenges through the lens of ECRs working in different disciplines on a common ecosystem, the Norwegian Skagerrak coast. The most densely populated coastline in Norway, the Skagerrak coast, is experiencing a multitude of anthropogenic stressors including fishing, aquaculture, eutrophication, climate chan…
