Sugar moiety has a direct influence on the secondary structure and properties of sturgeon gonadotropin

2009

Sugar moiety has a direct influence on the secondary structure and properties of sturgeon gonadotropin Sturgeon Acipenser güldenstädti Br. gonadotropic hormone (GTH) β-subunit (β-GTH) was selectively chemically deglycosylated (dg) by anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and trifluoromethane sulfonic acid. Two dgβ-GTH molecular forms retaining 35% (dgβ-GTH1) and 13% (dgβ-GTH2) of their initial carbohydrates were obtained. Investigation of the reassociated α-β hybrid dimers (recombinants) α-GTH+dgβ-GTH1 and α-GTH+dgβ-GTH2 showed that the immunoreactivity with antiserum raised against standard GTH dropped by 22.5%. Hybrid dimers were recognised by the standard GTH antibodies, which indicated that the s…

Standardization of islet isolation outcome- A new automatic system to determine pancreatic islet viability

2011

Pancreatic islet transplantation is emerging as a therapeutic approach for patients affected by diabetes. This approach consists of a minimally invasive procedure replacing insulin-producing cells (pancreatic islets). The technique has been proven successful, but limitations have been identified. One of the major challenges of the procedure is the counting of the isolated pancreatic islets, which is currently jeopardized by subjectivity and inaccuracy. Determination of the accurate islet number is a crucial factor in determining the correlation between the isolation product and clinical outcome. In the proposed study, we have developed software capable of objectively evaluating islet number…

Single-Center Retrospective Series of Intracranial Aneurysms Treated with the Barricade Coil System: Immediate and Six-Month Results

2020

Abstract Intracranial aneurysms (IAs) are most commonly found at the branch points of large arteries that form the circle of Willis. The prevalence of IAs in the adult population is 1–5%. IAs rupture is associated with subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) in 6–8 cases per 100 000 population, causing mortality in 40–50%. Aneurysm treatment is used to prevent rupture or rebleeding (for ruptured IAs). Randomised trials demonstrated the superiority of endovascular treatment (EVT) of ruptured aneurysms with coil systems over surgery. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Barricade coil system in the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. Detachable platinum coils, since the…

Theories on Teaching & Training in Ethics

2008

The paper examines the education and training of adults in ethics. It applies to courses at universities and colleges as well as in the work place. The paper explores the evidence on our ability to strengthen moral behaviour through courses on ethics, finds it to be weak, so starts with the assumption that we cannot teach people to be ethical. The paper asks therefore what the objectives of a course could be and how best to achieve them. It examines the different theories in the literature, eventually settling on four objectives: increasing moral cognition; teaching a widening and strengthening of ethical practices; adopting teaching approaches that maximise learning impact, and developing …

Optimisation of Conditions for Extraction of Biologically Active Compounds from Common Bryophytes in Latvia / Latvijâ Augoðu Briofîtu Ekstrakcijas Ap…

2015

Abstract Bryophytes are the second largest taxonomic group in the plant kingdom. They contain a high number of biologically active compounds. Studies of their composition are important for understanding evolutionary processes in the plant kingdom. The aim of this study was to assess bryophyte secondary metabolite extraction options and to increase the yields of polyphenols and substances determining the free radical scavenging activity of bryophyte extracts. Similar studies have been conducted using higher plants as model organisms, but not using bryophytes. Comparison of five extraction methods (conventional, Soxhlet extraction, treatment with microwaves, ultrasound, and supercritical CO2 …

The “Law in Context” for (Stepchild) Adoption in Same-Sex Couples: The Italian Models

2019

This essay focuses on a recent development in Italian family law with respect to stepchild adoption in cases involving same-sex couples. Resorting to arguments of both the continuity of the affective relationship and the best interests of the child, courts have been willing to permit adoptions in these cases under Article 44 of L. 184/1983 (“Adoption Act”), which provides for “adoption in particular cases” (“APC”). This article provides a special (not exceptional) tool, that, at the time it was drafted, was not contemplated for stepchild adoption by a parent’s same-sex partner, but could be adapted for such situations. This has remained the case even after the legislative choice not to gran…

Landscape Ecological Structure in the Eastern Part of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, Latvia

2008

Landscape Ecological Structure in the Eastern Part of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, Latvia Latvia is a country where the forest area has increased and habitat fragmentation has reversed compared with many other European countries. In order to examine the effect of this expansion on biodiversity, vegetation maps dating from 2002 and the years 1930-1936 were used for comparative landscape structure analyses while archive materials from forest plans, and data from the national forest management database were used for land use analysis. Four landscape ecoregions in the eastern side of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve were selected for analysis. Landscape structure indicators derived f…

Detection of rupture lines for active scanning

2007

Corner and junction detection is an important preprocessing step in image registration, data fusion, object recognition, and many other tasks. This work deals with corner and junction detection of characteristic features of the structure resulting from cross-pattern projection. The ultimate aim is to adapt the positions and orientation of the cross-pattern projections to what has been observed. The use of this projected light pattern in the framework of active vision allows us to identify certain points of interest on 3-D objects, to directly acquire a synthesis, which thus permits simplified detection, measurement, recognition, or tracking. We present detection methods for corners and junc…

Automatic Conjunctival Provocation Test Using Hough Transform of Extended Canny Edge Maps

2013

Computer-aided diagnosis is developed for assessment of allergic rhinitis/rhinoconjunctivitis measuring the relative redness of sclera under application of allergen solution. The patient’s eye images are taken from commercial digital camera. The iris is robustly localized using a gradient-based Hough circle transform. From the center of the pupil, the region of interest within the sclera is extracted using geometric anatomybased a-priori information. The red color pixels are extracted thresholding in the hue, saturation and value color space. Then, redness is measured by taking mean of saturation projected into zero hue. Evaluation is performed with 92 images taken from 13 subjects, 8 respo…

Genetic Diversity of White Clover (Trifolium Repens L.) from the Urban Area of Rīga Baltā Āboliņa (Trifolium Repens L.) Ģenētiskā Daudzveidība Rīgas …

2015
