The CINHEKS Research Design: Taking Stock and Moving Forward
2016
Comparative research design, at its best, in an international project focused on a complex topic, is a dynamic, iterative and on-going process. In the CINHEKS study this proved to be the case, both by design and in several ways our team did not, nor could not, anticipate. The tensions between purposeful planning, inevitable setbacks and serendipity turned out to be one of the most interesting aspects of CINHEKS and the purpose of this chapter is to take a step back, well outside methodological convention, to holistically and critically reflect on the lessons learned during the planning and execution of the CINHEKS comparative study. This chapter is an analysis of our efforts regarding the c…
No road is long with good company. What factors affect Ph.D. student’s satisfaction with their supervisor?
2021
PurposeHow frequently may be advisable for a supervisor to meet a PhD student? Are PhD students more satisfied if supervised by someone of the same gender, nationality or with common research interests? Thus far, we lack quantitative evidence regarding similar crucial aspects of managing PhD supervision. The goal of this study is hence to investigate what factors affect Ph.D. students' satisfaction about the professional and personal relationships with their supervisors.Design/methodology/approachWe focus on the characteristics of the interactions between the student and the supervisor, controlling for other important factors, namely, the supervisor's and student's traits, and the character…
Methodological approaches to the valuation of forest ecosystem services: An overview of recent international research trends
2021
Forests represent the most important source of ecosystem services (ES) on a global level both for the production of goods and for the provision of services and externalities, nevertheless scientific research in the economic field is lacking. Currently the number of documents relating to ES is 16 673, of which only 1 379 concern the forestry sector. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of scientific research trends in the field of economic evaluation of forest ecosystem services (FES). To this end, an on-line bibliographic survey was carried out on the main scientific search engines, which made it possible to quantify the works and at the same time to detect the main evaluation me…
Two worlds of change: on the internationalisation of universities
2010
Institutional change entails balancing multiple competing, inconsistent and often loosely coupled demands and concerns, often simultaneously. This article poses the following question: How are patterns of internationalisation of research among academic staff at universities balancing two worlds of change, that is, governance by the university leadership (H1) as well as initiatives by the faculty members (H2)? This article argues and empirically substantiates that internationalisation of academic staff tends to be a balancing‐act between these two worlds of change. Whereas most universities increasingly formulate strategies for internationalisation (H1), the research behaviour of faculty mem…
Piecing the puzzle together: case studies of international research in health-promoting sports clubs.
2015
This paper seeks to review the current international health-promoting sports club (HPSC) research, drawing together findings based on case studies from various countries to illustrate the status of HPSCs. In addition, future challenges for HPSC research and implementation are considered. The review includes six case studies from five countries. In summary, there are two major research themes in this area, namely ‘research into HPSC activity’ and ‘research into HPSC networks’. The first theme investigates the extent to which sports clubs and/or national sports organisations invest in health promotion (HP) – both in policy and practice. The latter theme is driven by an intention to widen the…
Physics with Antiprotons at the Future GSI Facility
2003
Recently GSI presented the plans for a major new international research facility (http://www.gsi.de/GSI-future/). Highly luminous secondary beams with excellent quality encompassing the production of antiprotons will be delivered. In a High Energy Storage Ring (HESR) with a bending power of 50 Tm antiprotons will be cooled either stochastically or by electrons. The envisaged limits are a momentum range of 1.5 to 15 GeV/c and a luminosity of 2 × 1032 cm-2 s-1. Four major physical research goals can be addressed: high precision charmonium spectroscopy, medium effects of open and hidden charm, the search for glueballs and hybrids, and the production of hypernuclei.
Promuovere le character skills per la transizione scuola-università: una ricerca- intervento internazionale
2022
In this contribution, we want to describe methodological assumptions with which to promote some character skills that must be trained in the students attending high school in view of the transition from school to university. These abilities are related to the person’s character, emotional and psychosocial aspects of the personality like flexibility, creativity, open-mindedness, resilience, decision-making skill and self-image. These skills significantly contribute to the construction of the 16-18-year-old student’s identity and support the development of his professional maturity during the school education period. High school teachers can contribute to this development by applying didactic…
