Affiliation Motivational System
2016
In this chapter, the concept of affiliation is presented as a general human disposition and basic motivation. The wide range of affiliative motives is analysed in the realms of interpersonal and group dynamics. Needs on the interpersonal level include attachment, intimacy and love, while the group dynamic is analysed in terms of in-group and inter-group relations. It is argued that all needs in the realm of interpersonal and group relations are interrelated and imply the existence of the larger underlying belonging motivation. Furthermore, the chapter also postulates that the conceptualisation of the human need for belonging should also include the need for distance and, in this way, should…
Using Network Community Detection to Investigate the Psychopathy Levels of Subjects Condemned for Mafia Crimes
2014
The main objective of this study is to understand what are the psychopathy levels of subjects condemned for Mafia crimes. To this end we will investigate a set of 30 subjects condemned for Mafia crimes and imprisoned in the “Pagliarelli” jail of Palermo (Italy). We will test their psychopathy level by using the PCL-R test. Additionally we will also investigate some other sociological feature of these subjects. This will allow us to characterize these criminals in terms of some psychiatric or sociological features. Such statistical characterization will be performed by using tools and methodologies of Statistical Physics and Network Theory. We believe that the importance of our study is twof…
Majority and minority influence in inductive reasoning: A preliminary study
1991
Ninety-three students were exposed to majority and minority influence in an inductive reasoning task. The former induced convergent thinking processes, though its effects were not reducible to mere compliance. The latter activated more divergent constructive processes, supporting the predictions of Conversion Theory.
Determinants of social integration in the community: an exploratory analysis of personal, interpersonal and situational variables
2004
This article aims to explore the effects of personal, interpersonal, and situational variables on social integration in the community. Structural equation analyses from two-wave panel data (N = 536) of adult participants living in an urban area showed that personal determinants (perceived stress and depressive mood), and situational determinants (undesirable life events) were statistically related to a decrease in social integration in the community. Interpersonal determinants (emotional, guidance, and instrumental support) were positively associated with an increase in social integration in the community. Implications of these and other findings are discussed. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley &…
Zaangażowane badania jakościowe – perspektywa autobiograficzna
2018
The presented article is an attempt to reconstruct/retrospect my professional biography in its methodological section. It is a description of the way I went to become a biographic, narrative scholar. It is also a description of the reasons – theories, concepts, discussions and disputes that accompanied me on the way. I present my critical attitude towards Polish school and Polish education, posing questions about education, school and teacher. The second matter that organizes my research is the question about interpersonal relationships, intimacy, marriage, family and what is happening between: spouses, partners, parents and children. I ask what in our relationships with others favours a ha…
The use of gamification in education: a bibliometric and text mining analysis
2016
The use of games in education represents a promising tool to motivate and engage students in their learning process. Most of previous research on the topic has focused to develop theoretical frameworks or to conduct experiments as a means to analyse learning outcomes such as knowledge retention, problem-solving skills gains or attitudes toward game-based learning. Nevertheless, little research has focused on providing a comprehensive literature review, which will help researchers to better understand how this stream of research has evolved over the last years. In this study, we use a bibliometric, social network and text mining analysis in order to provide useful up-to-date information to p…
Technology-Mediated Communication in the Workplace
2019
Technology-mediated communication has become an integral part of work and the workplace. Since the early days of digital communication technology, views of both the affordances and uses of communication technology have become more varied and complex. Understanding the reality of communication technology at work means taking into account its ubiquitous and ever-changing nature as well as the interpersonal relationships and social networks in which it is used. This chapter explores the ways in which communication technology relates to building mutual understanding and trust as well as managing networks and coworker relationships. Knowledge of these key issues is used to present ideas about ho…
Promoting Sustainable Social Emotional Learning at School through Relationship-Centered Learning Environment, Teaching Methods and Formative Assessme…
2020
Abstract How to promote social emotional learning (SEL) at school depends largely on teachers. Mostly teachers implement specific programs, but they have difficulties in incorporating SEL into the regular curriculum. The main aim of the paper is to present the conceptual model of sustainable integration of SEL into everyday teaching practices in every subject. This approach has been developed in the project ìLearning to Be: Development of Practices and Methodologies for Assessing Social, Emotional and Health Skills within Education Systemsî. This initiative is based on the premise that the assessment of learning at school should go beyond grading studentsí knowledge and should include pract…
