The Use of Facial Characteristics as Engendering Strategies in Phoenician-Punic Studies

Facial characteristics such as discs on cheeks or exaggerated chins have been traditionally used to interpret Phoenician-Punic materials as representing either females or males. Beards and pointed chins, for instance, have been considered male attributes for terracotta masks, while disks have been interpreted as feminine makeup when present on figurines and ostrich eggshells. However, problems and even paradoxes of interpretation emerge when such characteristics appear on objects already (and perhaps arbitrarily) alternately gendered male or female. The Corded Ware is one of the major archaeological traditions of Late Neolithic Europe. Its burial customs are characterized by single graves but multiple burials also occur. We present a detailed study of antemortem and perimortem trauma in a group of Corded Ware skeletons from four multiple graves and give the most probable interpretation of the site, based upon all available bioarchaeological evidence. The pattern of observed injuries in male, female, and subadult skeletons, including cranial trauma, arrow wounds, and fractures of the forearm and hands points towards a violent event that resulted in the death of all individuals, most probably a raid. Religious Education in Finland: Promoting Intelligent Belief?

This article discusses current dilemmas in religious education in Finland. Different interpretations of confessional religious education are presented in the context of the Lutheran tradition. Pedagogical applications of religious education advocated by Michael Grimmitt are explored as plausible approaches in promoting the religious understanding of students. The article presents some suggestions to enrich Grimmitt's pedagogy with a more argumentative approach, which unites both reason and feeling. Such an intelligent approach is arguably in accord with the pedagogical interpretation of confessional religious education.

La implantación y difusión de las artes marciales japonesas en Occidente supuso la importación de prácticas socioculturales privadas de las premisas de su contexto de origen. ¿Cómo afrontar estas prácticas que son ajenas a nuestra identidad cultural? Una interpretación estricta exige entenderlas como prácticas corporales con una idiosincrasia cultural, caracterizadas por incorporar una experiencia vivencial en la que el cuerpo ocupa un lugar preeminente. Su enseñanza y aprendizaje se establecen a través de un sistema triangular integrado por una esencia espiritual, una forma técnica y una estructura física (sin-gi-tai), que se inserta en un proceso singular (shu-ha-ri).
Knowledge Acquisition in Conceptual Ontological Artificial Intelligence System

The paper deals with active knowledge acquisition based on dialogue between AI system and its user. Presented method uses Conceptual Ontological Object Orientated System (COOS) to distinguish differences between concepts and to unequivocally process the input stream. In case of concepts, that do not exist in the system yet, adequate algorithms are being used to position them in ontological core. Separate concepts differ in attributes values or in sets of direct connections with other concepts. The communication aspect of the system deliver information that allow generating proper interpretation for userpsilas statement.
A vision system for symbolic interpretation of dynamic scenes using arsom

We describe an artificial high-level vision system for the symbolic interpretation of data coming from a video camera that acquires the image sequences of moving scenes. The system is based on ARSOM neural networks that learn to generate the perception-grounded predicates obtained by image sequences. The ARSOM neural networks also provide a three-dimensional estimation of the movements of the relevant objects in the scene. The vision system has been employed in two scenarios: the monitoring of a robotic arm suitable for space operations, and the surveillance of an electronic data processing (EDP) center.
GW170817, General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations, and the Neutron Star Maximum Mass

Recent numerical simulations in general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) provide useful constraints for the interpretation of the GW170817 discovery. Combining the observed data with these simulations leads to a bound on the maximum mass of a cold, spherical neutron star (the TOV limit): ${M_{\rm max}^{\rm sph}}\lesssim 2.74/\beta$, where $\beta$ is the ratio of the maximum mass of a uniformly rotating neutron star (the supramassive limit) over the maximum mass of a nonrotating star. Causality arguments allow $\beta$ to be as high as $1.27$, while most realistic candidate equations of state predict $\beta$ to be closer to $1.2$, yielding ${M_{\rm max}^{\rm sph}}$ in the range $2.16…
