description

On the occasion of the centenary of the mosaic’s discovery of the Twelve Labours of Hercules in Liria (Valencia), this article aims to approach to some aspects overlooked in previous works. Within the study of Roman domestic spaces, the room’s decoration is an essential factor in order to understand its function. Over the years, several studies have focused their efforts on a descriptive analysis of the mosaic, mentioning only the social interpretation, whereas the current trends try to analyze other aspects such as the study of elites and their symbolism. For this reason, our goal in this article is to analyze the social aspect of this pavement, which particular choice of the central motif, which is not random, combined with the twelve labours, makes it an unicum. This selection is related to the identity of the owner of the house, aspect that also we will try to elucidate.
