Multisensory discourse resources : decolonizing ethnographic research practices

2020

Researchers have attempted to address the intersection of multisensory and multimodal discourse practices from an interactional perspective. This study argues for the value of experiential, non-interactional multisensory discourse resources and proposes a conceptual framework of multisensory discourse resources to bridge visual and family language ideology ethnography. A year-long ethnographic case study of three Nepalese families (immigrant and transmigrant), consisting of 150 h of observational data triangulated with qualitative interviews, posed two questions: (1) How do transnational families, in the homescape, use multisensory discourse resources to provide cultural, national, religiou…

Performing ‘us’ and ‘other’ : Intersectional analyses of right-wing populist media

2020

Finland and Sweden share the ideal of a Nordic welfare state, with gender equality as a central tenet. In both countries, right-wing populist parties have gained prominence in mainstream politics. Despite similar political agendas at the moment, these parties have different political histories, and different modes of expressing their anti-immigration pleas. In this comparative study, we examine how the distinction between ‘us’ and the ‘other’ is performed intersectionally in terms of gender, social class, ethnicity and ‘race’, and sexuality. For this purpose, we examine empirical material collected from the party newspapers of the Finns Party and the Sweden Democrats, because their content…

Families in flux: at the nexus of fluid family configurations and language practices

2021

Research on multilingualism in the home has approached the family as a fixed unit thus neglecting the dynamic view of the family and its intersection with family language practices. The present study aims to address this gap by focusing on Russian-speaking mothers in Finland who have raised their children bilingually in single-parent as well as in dual-parent families. Russian speakers are the largest minority language group in Finland, and their number is constantly growing. The current study is a contribution to the research on family language practices in the Finnish context. It examines the nexus of shifts in family configurations and language practices and explores how the dynamic chan…

The minimal free resolution of fat almost complete intersections in ℙ1 x ℙ1

2017

AbstractA current research theme is to compare symbolic powers of an ideal I with the regular powers of I. In this paper, we focus on the case where I = IX is an ideal deûning an almost complete intersection (ACI) set of points X in ℙ1 × ℙ1. In particular, we describe a minimal free bigraded resolution of a non-arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (also non-homogeneous) set 𝒵 of fat points whose support is an ACI, generalizing an earlier result of Cooper et al. for homogeneous sets of triple points. We call 𝒵 a fat ACI.We also show that its symbolic and ordinary powers are equal, i.e, .

Disabili, sì, ma “normali”. Abilismo interiorizzato e riproduzione della norma (etero)sessuale

2022

The main aim of the article based on an exploratory research consists precisely in analyzing the processes of normative gender construction in disabled embodiment interpreted through the heterosexual matrix and sexual binarism lenses, processes that intersect with the dimension of disability providing the consolidation of an uncritical construction of disabled bodies subjected to overall processes of normalization. The conclusions and discussions focus on the further depoliticization of those complicit disabled identities who don’t challenge ableism and heterosexism.

On 2-(n^2,2n,2n-1) designs with three intersection numbers

2007

The simple incidence structure $${\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{A},2)}$$ , formed by the points and the unordered pairs of distinct parallel lines of a finite affine plane $${\mathcal{A}=(\mathcal{P}, \mathcal{L})}$$ of order n > 4, is a 2 --- (n 2,2n,2n---1) design with intersection numbers 0,4,n. In this paper, we show that the converse is true, when n ? 5 is an odd integer.

On the regularity of circular splicing languages : A survey and new developments

2009

Circular splicing has been introduced to model a specific recombinant behaviour of circular DNA, continuing the investigation initiated with linear splicing. In this paper we focus on the relationship between regular circular languages and languages generated by finite circular splicing systems. We survey the known results towards a characterization of the intersection between these two classes and provide new contributions on the open problem of finding this characterization. First, we exhibit a non-regular circular language generated by a circular simple system thus disproving a known result in this area. Then we give new results related to a restrictive class of circular splicing systems…

Complete, Exact and Efficient Implementation for Computing the Adjacency Graph of an Arrangement of Quadrics

2007

The original publication is available at www.springerlink.com ; ISBN 978-3-540-75519-7 ; ISSN 0302-9743 (Print) 1611-3349 (Online); International audience; We present a complete, exact and efficient implementation to compute the adjacency graph of an arrangement of quadrics, \ie surfaces of algebraic degree~2. This is a major step towards the computation of the full 3D arrangement. We enhanced an implementation for an exact parameterization of the intersection curves of two quadrics, such that we can compute the exact parameter value for intersection points and from that the adjacency graph of the arrangement. Our implementation is {\em complete} in the sense that it can handle all kinds of…

A Graph Based Algorithm For Intersection Of Subdivision Surfaces

2003

Computing surface intersections is a fundamental problem in geometric modeling. Any boolean operation can be seen as an intersection calculation followed by a selection of the parts necessary for building the surface of the resulting object. A robust and efficient algorithm to compute intersection on subdivision surfaces (surfaces generated by the Loop scheme) is proposed here. This algorithm relies on the concept of a bipartite graph which allows the reduction of the number of faces intersection tests. Intersection computations are accelerated by the use of the bipartite graph and the neighborhood of intersecting faces at a given level of subdivision to deduce intersecting faces at the fol…

On block pumpable languages

2016

Ehrenfeucht, Parikh and Rozenberg gave an interesting characterisation of the regular languages called the block pumping property. When requiring this property only with respect to members of the language but not with respect to nonmembers, one gets the notion of block pumpable languages. It is shown that these block pumpable are a more general concept than regular languages and that they are an interesting notion of their own: they are closed under intersection, union and homomorphism by transducers; they admit multiple pumping; they have either polynomial or exponential growth.
