The implications of teachers’ implicit theories for moral education: A case study from Finland

2017

Implicit theories concerning the malleability of human qualities are known to have a powerful impact on motivation and learning, but their role in moral education is an under-researched topic. In this qualitative case study, we examined the impact of implicit theories on four Finnish teachers’ practices of teaching morally and in teaching morality. The data include preliminary and stimulated recall interviews (STR) as well as classroom observations. Our results demonstrate the multiple ways in which teachers’ implicit beliefs are communicated to students and influence teacher’s interpretations and endeavors to educate the ethical capabilities of students. The study provides evidence for the…

Multiple mini-interviews as a selection tool for initial teacher education admissions

2022

This study investigates the reliability of multiple mini interviews (MMIs) to select students for classroom and special education teacher programs (n = 418) using intraclass correlations and cross-classified multilevel modeling. The results indicated mostly small effects of clustering of applicants to different interviewers and five-station circuits. The largest variance components in the MMI total score were for applicants (63.3%) and measurement error (20.6%), while the variance component for the interviewer was relatively small (11.6–14.4%). The applicants' and interviewers' perceptions were positive. This study provides evidence for the use of MMIs as a reliable tool for initial teacher…

Looking for Peace of Mind? Manage your (Technical) Debt : An Exploratory Field Study

2017

Background: In the last two decades Technical Debt (TD) has received a considerable amount of attention from software engineering research and practice. Recently, a small group of studies suggests that, in addition to its technical and economic consequences, TD can affect developers’ psychological states and morale. However, until now there has been a lack of empirical research clarifying such influences. Aims: In this study, we aim at taking the first step in filling this gap by investigating the potential impacts of TD and its management on developers’ morale. Method: Drawing from previous literature on morale, we decided to explore the influence of TD and its management on three dimensio…

CLIL Challenges : Secondary School CLIL Teachers’ Voices and Experienced Agency in Three European Contexts

2020

This qualitative interview study focuses on CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) teacher agency in three European contexts, Austria, Finland and Andalusia, Spain. The aim of the study is to understand how individual CLIL teachers experience their agency when encountering challenges in their work and to demonstrate the multifaceted quality of their agency. The study employs the Listening Guide method (Gilligan, 2015) to listen to the voices of three secondary school subject teachers from three diverse contexts. The analysis shows that CLIL challenges both empowered and disempowered the teachers depending on how meaningful they found their work and what their possibilities to act w…

Evaluer un dispositif de formation à distance : Principes et retour d'expérience

2008

The multiplication of distance learning platforms and the complexity of some of those used within the university system raise questions. First of all, the stabilization of writing practices of digital documents. Secondly, the evaluation of these devices. We want to address this last point in this article. What is it possible to assess in this field? There are many dimensions of evaluation, depending on the angle chosen. We limit ourselves to an approach focused on evaluating the human-computer interface. The chosen testing ground is a website for law studies, developed by the University of Burgundy's further education section.

E-Sports y brecha de género: la percepción de las profesionales españolas

2019

The present paper aims to identify the causes of under-representation of women in E-sports. According to a genre perspective, interest in videogames at the amateur level is quite similar. However, in its professional level, female participation becomes very limited. The fact that physical effort is irrelevant (a requirement for ?traditional sports?) could be considered a variable that would negatively affect greater to equality in the conditions of access and participation of women in electronic sports. Against any predictions, the data on the presence of women are elocuent: few women, with much lower wages than men to remunerate same skills, and a general complaint by the female profession…

Trust-oriented affordances: A five-country study of news trustworthiness and its socio-technical articulations

2022

Research on trust has come to the forefront of communication studies. Beyond the dominant focus on informational trust and its country-specific articulations, trustworthiness evaluations can relate to the materiality of news and its global manifestations. Especially in digital algorithmic environments, understanding news trustworthiness requires a holistic approach, which combines informational and socio-technical aspects while addressing both institutional and interpersonal trust. Drawing on 488 in-depth interviews with media consumers in Argentina, Finland, Israel, Japan, and the United States, this article investigates news (dis)trust from the lens of socio-materiality. The six trust-or…

Designing a Eustress Toolbox : From entrepreneur experiences to an online service

2018

Stress is typically seen as a negative phenomenon. However, the positive side of stress (i.e., eustress) has the potential to improve well-being, productivity, and innovativeness, thus increasing individuals’ daily resources at work. Focusing on eustress could enhance work engagement by turning some of the negatively perceived stressors into positive challenges. We explored this possibility by interviewing 21 Finnish entrepreneurs from various fields regarding their experiences of eustress. Nine of the interviewed entrepreneurs also recorded a eustress diary. Based on thematic analysis of the interview data, six main themes supporting eustress were identified: (a) Selfreflection toward chan…
